International Priority Shipping, Bah!

International Shipping is neither faster, nor less costly.

I have shipped much larger shipments thru Rock Auto that took less time to arrive and didn't cost as much to ship.

I might as well of sent the part on a tour excursion!

The part I ordered literally drove right by me shipping from Wisconsin and landing in Kentucky before it MIGHT make a more direct path to Canada. Going to take twice as long to receive. How is that efficient?

eBay, this is NOT a very good service and you need to do much better.

GSP listings do list the full shipping and import fees so I'm not sure why you wouldn't see them.

It's a shipping scam that only benefits eBay. I'm in Canada and it takes weeks for an eBay-purchased item from the US to get to me. I routinely buy items from non-eBay sites in China and in Britain. They all arrive within days. No fuss, no muss... and for less $$$. Once an item is shipped by eBay's ironically named International Priority Shipping it simply disappears into the ether for the next several weeks. Tracking is a joke (non-existent). But it's necessary to some of us so we can arrange to be home to accept delivery.. The item has always arrived, but it sure takes longer than any other method I've ever used. I also don't understand how the same item can be purchased from two different sellers and the shipping charges are dramatically different (and the seller closest to me was the most expensive by $10). I know there's nothing I can do about it, but I sure wish eBay would fix it.

It's very difficult to make generalizations about international shipping--no matter what the shipping method used--because there are just so many variables.

A little over a year ago, I bought a mobile phone from an eBay seller who shipped through the GSP from the eastern United States.  At the same time, I bought a case for the phone from an eBay seller whose listing claimed that the item was in California.  I'm in British Columbia, so by your thinking the case should have reached me sooner than the phone, particularly as the GSP wasn't involved, right?

Absolutely not.  The case certainly wasn't shipped from California.  The envelope it arrived in had a Swedish franking mark on it and I suspect it somehow originated from mainland China.  It arrived almost two weeks after the phone reached me.

Having said that, I had a feeling there was something rather fishy about the location as listed for the case so I sort of anticipated that when purchasing it.  I also got the sense from the listing that the seller of the phone knew what he was doing when he listed with the GSP.  I think many problems with the GSP are caused by one or both parties not knowing what they've got themselves into.  I did my homework first and got a good deal on the phone, particularly the shipping charge.

It may also interest you to know that there's a service called Borderfree that many US retailers now use for shipping outside of the United States.  It was originally a Canada Post operation until it was sold.  You may want to look it up sometime to see what non-eBay online retailers you should be avoiding if you don't want to use a service similar to the GSP.

As far as your question about dramatically different shipping charges, keep in mind that the shipping price for a GSP item is what the seller charges for shipping the item to the GSP hub in Kentucky plus the charge for shipping from Kentucky to you, and that second charge is based on what information is provided to the GSP administrator about the nature of the item.  Sellers that offer "free" shipping within the US usually have lower GSP shipping charges to Canada than those that do not.

I am a buyer, and am now going through the very frustrating process to trace a package shipped this very expensive and slow route.

E-Bay declares package has been delivered and refuses to allow me to contact them; declaring item was "received" and case is closed for a claim.

I next contacted UPS, who gave it to Can Par after clearing customs into Canada. Can Par in turn gave to a "very small "french speaking" Delivery company, but refuse to divulge to me just what their name is. (this seems very clandestine at best).

Now since I did not receive this item, now three days have passed declared delivery date, and I am getting stonewalled every step of process to track this item down.

E-Bay sucks! I will never buy another product if this is the shipping method; USPS is only way to route anything from or to America

Since eBay/Paypal will not refund you , because the item shows as delivered, go instead to the credit card you really paid with. Paypal is just a useful mediator.

Phone the 1-800 customer service line and ask about a chargeback.

Meanwhile, ask family/ housemates about the parcel. It may have been put carefully aside so it could not possibly get lost.

And also ask neighbours. UPS once gave me a bicycle, thoughtfully parked in my fenced back yard, that was addressed to an apartment on another street a block away.

RNS, do remember that some people pay with PP balances and have no CC fallback.

poster, contyact ebbay CS and ask for your call to be referred to a GSP specialist for investigation. You should get a callback from the specialist. This is the only way you will get any help from ebay.

You state that eBay refuses to allow you to contact them. If you are referring to the sometimes circular route taken by choosing options from the Help & Contact area, the best thing to do is telephone them.

Here is how to contact eBay by phone:  At the bottom of this page, click on "Help & Contact", then "Contact eBay" tab.  Choose any topic that seems relevant, such as "Buying" > "How to pay for an item".   Not all topics will provide a link, but many, such as the one above, take you to a screen where you will find, on the right side, 2 choices:  call eBay on a toll-free number, or have them call you.  Follow the prompts.  Ask for the GSP specialist.  They may say you will be called back - get a reference number and a time line for that call.  Have all the relevant information ready.  Be patient - it may take a long time and several customer service reps, before you have all your questions answered satisfactorily.  If you are not getting logical answers, ask to speak to a supervisor.  Call back if needed.  The call centre is in the Phillippines, not all operatives are well trained or familiar with eBay Canada.  If you're lucky, you'll get the call centre in Utah and a native English speaker to assist you - most likely on weekdays during normal business hours..

And it is a very foolish thing to do.

Although I admit I do it myself, constantly.

I guess some are worried that somehow their cc information will be stolen if they use the card, but if they use their bank account the same is just as true (or false), and they are much more likely to have problems with a seller, on eBay or any of the thousands of other sites that use PP, than they are with PP itself.

20 days to receive a shipment is ridiculous when UPS, Fedex and USPS will generally do it in 5 business days or less for the same or lesser cost.

You're what we call a troll. You are not adding any value. The Global Shipping program is seriously flawed in that it costs more and takes significantly longer than any other competitor. Telling people they chose it is irrelevant when they are communicating their displeasure with a flawed services.

I agree ... I buy from Canada, and sellers ... as soon as I see that you're using International Priority or Global Shipping, I'm gone.  These little plans double and even triple the cost of shipping to Canada.  Use USPS and give us a break!

If you would like American sellers to see your comment, post on the .com boards.  I seriously doubt many US sellers read the .ca discussion boards.

Some people who have never seen this shipping process before don't know there is another option.  I used it, and BTW my tracking numbers have yet work after 5 days, and did not know I could request direct mail from the seller before I bid.  If I had known I would have asked.  Don't assume everyone knows the options.  I don't bid from auctions with excessive shipping rates, never have, never will.  That's my choice and I'm sticking with it.  I am sure whatever I am looking at will come back around at a future date so I can wait.

USPS is a better safe guard with international shipping as you can file postal fraud if the item is broken or doesn't arrive at all. At least you can if you live in Canada.

you can file postal fraud if the item is broken or doesn't arrive at all.

HUH?

Why would it be 'fraud' if the item arrives broken? Damage in transit is more likely to be because of poor packaging, which is the responsibility of the seller. But not fraud.

Non-arrival, providing the item was sent in the first place, is the responsibility of the carrier.

In both cases, from the point of view of the recipient, a refund would be owed by the seller, not the carrier.

If you are trying to say the item is not as described, I very much doubt USPS would take any responsibility at all.

If an item does not arrive, the buyer can claim through eBay or Paypal or his credit card. If the seller cannot prove delivery*, he is required to refund the buyer.

If an item is damaged in transit before arriving in Kentucky, the GPS will apparently refuse or return it. If they damage it, and all too often they do, GPS will refund the buyer; again through eBay or PP.

What you fail to realize is that the postal insurance is payable to the guy who bought it. So if you receive a broken vase, the seller has to make the claim to USPS, and any payment would be made to the seller. And then the seller might refund you.**

*The main reason GPS is popular with sellers is that he only has to prove delivery to the GSP plant in Kentucky. If the item is late arriving from there, GPS will refund the buyer through eBay or PP.

** In real life, of course, you would have been covered by eBay or PP, and the seller would fight it out with USPS on his own.

Did you file a claim with paypal which gives you 6 months of protection against item-not-received.

Have you googled this town?

I just did.

I think you bought from ChinA.

The seller is using a fake location.

What is the seller's postal address on the Paypal invoice or the Order Details page?

More to the point, go to your PP account and open an Item Not Received dispute immediately.

You have only 180 days from payment for this, so act now.

PP hides the Resolution Centre at the top of the page under Tools.
