Anyone know what kind of duty and / or import charges apply to shipping to Canada? I want apair of boots over $200 but not sure how much extra would be charged at the border . Thanks.

import and duty fees to Canada

The duty rate for clothing and footwear is 18% if the item is not covered by NAFTA; but, in my experience, customs hardly ever charges the duty – even if the item is declared as "apparel".

As for the tax, it would depend on where you reside. Generally, items above C$20 (about US$ 18.5) are subject to tax; but it's hit or miss.

For example, if you live in BC, you have to pay 12% tax (5% GST & 7% PST).

For a C$216 (~ US$200) item, customs is likely to charge C$25.92 (= C$216 * 12%).

If customs does charge this amount, Canada Post (assuming that the item will be shipped using USPS) will charge C$9.95 to collect the tax.

Total = Tax + Canada Post Handling Fee = C$ 35.87 --> just an estimate

You're welcome. In the unlikely event that the CBSA does charge the duty, that would be an additional C$43.55. :-I

Item = C$216
BC 12% tax (if you live in another province, just substitute)
18% duty

Item + Tax = 216 + 25.92 = 241.92
Amount subject to duty = 241.92 * 18% >>> Duty = 43.5456
Duty + Tax = 43.5456 + 25.92 = 69.47

Total import charges (inc. Canada Post Handling fee 9.95) = 79.42 (just an estimate)

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/postal-postale/duty-droits-eng.html
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/mobile/est-cal-eng.html – doesn't include Canada Post's handling fee

Are these boots worn or not worn? I think that used clothing shouldn't have any duties.

Anyway, I just went to clear a package coming from USA to Canada and they charged me no duty because they just assumed it's made in the USA. The sender didn't indicate the country of origin.
