CA Sellers: Please share your insights!

I would like to hear about your insights on what it's like being a Canadian eBay seller. Please post your thoughts here, what works, what doesn't, ideas for improvements to the site or for new features, etc. Please keep the topic on selling.

Note: This is not a thread like our weekly Board Hour. I'll try to stay active on here as much as possible but please keep any questions or site issues (including any comments on what is not working with GSP! ;-)) for our weekly discussions. What I'm hoping to do here is get a sense of your business insights and perhaps even find an idea or two we can look into implementing.

Looking forward to read you!

I really like selling on eBay.  I sell vintage british car parts and I need those worldwide buyers for my items.  Canada Post has been really good and items sent to places such as Russia, Poland, Cyprus, Portugal, France, Japan have been delivered in amazing time. Some countries have minimum box sizes and different max weight/length so I always check.  I list everything on my iPhone 5 through the App.  Not sure if I would sell if I didn't have it.  I have not had a return or Non paying buyer YET but have had the very positive feedback buyer who was a seller give me all 1's on my DSR Stars.

If eBay were to add something I would really like to know how many "Favorite Seller's" I have.

I was selling higher priced items that cost a fair bit to ship. The last few rounds of eBay grabs for money re: a full percentage on Final Value Fees and on the shipping have pretty much forced me to look for other venues.

I did like selling on eBay, however I don't think I can compete

Many of these have been posted in the Weekly sessions but I will repeat them ...

1) Change GTC listings so that a seller can specify how many times they want to list the item. Example, I want to list an used one of a kind item for 6 months only then evaluate why it does not sell.

2) PayPal Shipping labels

- Have Tracked Packet USA and International not show the postage cost on the label
. Also the TP label size is a strange size and does not fit Canada Post Labelopes.

- Allow a seller the option to display shipping costs on the label or not.

- Fix PayPal shipping glitches ... still has some since the addition of Tracked Packet

3) eBay listing Shipping and Payments

- Allow sellers to show the discounted cost of PayPal shipping labels in the eBay listing without having to use the calculated shipping discount. eBay.com has this for USPS rates.

- Allow a seller to specify more than one calculated shipping discount for domestic and international.  PayPal discounts vary for the type of service (Tracked Packet 14%, Expedited Parcel 18%, Xpresspost 8%)

4) Communicate with sellers on eBay

- Announce the changes that are be implemented each week on Thursday/Friday night eBay maintenance period. Each Friday and weekend, sellers are surprised with something that has been implemented. Now the changes have been announced in the Seller updates but it would be nice to know when they are to be individually implemented.

- Many sites have bug and issues logs available for members to see. As they are worked on and the status changes, updates are made to that problem log. eBay does this with eBay Dev pages for issues and changes to the APIs. Keep members (buyers and sellers) informed.

- Sellers get twice yearly Seller Updates in the spring and fall. Buyers get nothing. No notice of eBay listings changes like the photos gallery or My eBay. Changes are made to My eBay layout and format and features many times in the past year. No announcement of the changes or direction. Extremely annoying to find the look and feel changed to My eBay. Buyer updates should be published twice a year. What has this got to do with sellers? Sellers are buyers. Sellers like to know how the changes affect their buyers.

More to come later when I have more time.

“insights on what it's like being a Canadian eBay seller”

Let’s start at the beginning.  What is eBay?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKtlK7sn0JQ  skip the ad.

In fact, eBay is a venue, nothing more than a venue: a place to advertise our products to potential buyers.  Fortunately, I was already experienced in the mail order business (direct marketing) and adding eBay as a method of advertising my products was easy.

At the beginning, fifteen years ago, I used eBay, Yahoo and Amazon, three online venues, in addition to my own website and my regular mail customers (many collectors without computers or online access). Over time eBay proved to be the only online venue consistently attracting buyers and this is where I concentrated my marketing efforts.

From being an “auction” site in the early days (it was an exciting novelty where just about everything sold), eBay has gradually become an e-commerce facility where buyers come to buy things at fixed price with pre-determined shipping costs. Successful sellers have adapted to the change.

It is important to note that what is “good for eBay” is not necessarily “good for sellers”.  In the last many years eBay expanded its marketplace by adding high volume sellers with huge inventory (large number of SKUs).  Their goal is to present more items to buyers. While it works for eBay generating more fees, it also means more competition for buyer’s eyeballs and pocketbook.

Looking at it from a Canadian perspective, one important factor over the years has been the value of the US dollars in relation to the Canadian dollar since a very large percentage of sales on eBay finds its way to the American or overseas markets (priced in US$).  Back in 1999, Canadian sellers were getting Cdn$1.50/$1.60 per US$1.00.  By 2004, it was Cdn$ 1.40 per US$1.00. In 2009, we were getting about Cdn$ 1.20 per US$.  Now the dollar trades around par (give or take a nickel either way). The de facto devaluation in the value of the US$ had more impact on Canadian sellers than all the eBay fee increases combined.

Other factors working against Canadian sellers have been the never ending annual increases in postal costs and eBay/PayPal insistence in using “tracking” (or delivery confirmation), a low cost American shipping method, not easily available for most products shipped out of Canada.

Over the years, we have also seen eBay becoming a micromanager of every transaction, trying to standardize every aspect of every transaction.  Frustrating!

Constant changes in fees and policies have made it difficult, more so for Canadian sellers who are often subject to policies based on the American experience (tracking requirements for TRS badge for example).

Now, I am more or less retired.  I look at the challenges facing new Canadian sellers and often wonder: do they have a chance to succeed? Too many come here trying to sell the wrong items (stuff not meant to be sold by mail), unprepared for the huge competition and difficulties to sell to an international marketplace through direct marketing.

Suggestions for new Canadian sellers (in no preferential order):

-       Sell what you know – Know what you sell

-       Study and analyze your competition

-       Make sure your products are meant for “mail order”

-       Leave paranoia behind.  This is business. Think of protecting your buyers (not yourself)

-       Since the marketplace (not you) really controls selling prices, profit is made by buying at lower costs than your competitors!

-       Guarantee your products. Be positive and proud of what you sell.

-       Absorb your packing and shipping costs into your selling prices – as much as possible

I wish all Canadian sellers the best of luck.

Low cost suggestions for eBay -

1 - In addition to telephone add a link for email to Customer Support. Many users prefer or need to use email (or cannot use telephone) for a variety of valid reasons. Preferably, have all emails coming from Canadian users handled by specialists understanding the Canadian marketplace.

2 - To protect Canadian buyers against scammers (yes they do exist), eBay should require that all Canadian sellers wishing to use eBay's invoicing system to calculate GST/HST provide eBay with their registration number and assure the number is included on the invoice (as required by law).  It may not eliminate every scam but will certainly help in some instances.

My comment relates to GST/HST  as applicable to books.

The tax applicable to items purchased by Canadians  from Canadian sellers, differs by province.

I sell books which are exempt from the provincial component of HST...  HST is a combined percentage of the GST plus the provincial tax  or PST.

Provinces with HST include Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. All of the other provinces and territories have the one tax of 5 %

Books are exempt form the provincial component of HST  making HST equal to 5 % for books... the same as GST which is equal to 5%.

Books are exempt  but postage as parcels is not.

Invoicing on eBay allows for one calculation of tax... on the total of item price plus shipping..

It is not possible to apply a tax of 5 % on books, and the full HST value for postage, separately.

It is because of this inability to apply a different tax rate for books as opposed to postage that I have to include the HST/GST cost in the price of the book and postage....

Since the tax is included in the price of the item and postage... eBay applies the FVF to this included tax amount.

For me  that is about $40 to $45 in eBay FVF paid on tax....each year

I would like to apply the tax in an invoice as a different percentage for books and for postage...

This gets quite tricky  when one sells both books and non-book items on eBay....Non-book items are charged a full HST  with no exemption

Things get even more tricky  as certain postal options(lettermail as an example)   are charged GST for mail to all provinces...

One needs two tax tables..

One tax table for books,  with GST = HST =5 %  for all provinces, and certain postage options.

A second tax table for non-book items and the cost of postage.. with GST and HST based on province where the buyer lives...

we should be able to specify which table applies to item purchased, as opposed to postage....

You asked that this thread be limited to selling on ebay, but a similar thread for buying is important.

IMO there are many more issues facing buyers than sellers at this point in time.

For example, the GSP.

Even though you requested that comments be restricted to selling, you mentioned the GSP.

As far as I can see the GSP should only be good for Canadian sellers and sellers should be cheering it on .............. (unless it scares other international buyers away) and so those comments are really about buying and not selling.

I have numerous comments about buying.......

Selling?  Not so much.

Hello i*m-still-here,

Thanks for your comment. As I'm eBay Canada's Country Product Manager looking over the Seller Experience, at this time I'm looking to get insights from sellers on the site. Bryan, my counterpart who looks after the Buyer Experience, may opt to create a similar thread on the Buyer forum at some point if he chooses to.

Regarding GSP, it's important to keep in mind that it's a new program that is currently going through its growing pains and that we are diligently working with the GSP team to make it better for Canadian buyers. That's a topic that is 100% buyer facing at this time and something that is vastly discussed in all our weekly Board Hour sessions, I'm hoping we can move to other topics in this thread.

Thanks,

As a Canadian seller, you should remove FVFs on shipping.  There are many heavy items that I listed oneBay that I am not willing to sell to International buyers due to costly postages rates to International countries which I didn't want to be dinged the hefty FVFs on shipping.

I understand that about 2% of sellers offer excessive shipping to cover their low starting prices but why "penalize" us 98% sellers with FVFs on shipping?  I do think charging FVFs on shipping is illegal.  eBay have to realize that we sellers don't make any profits on shipping costs and I am sure that many of use don't include the so-called "handling" charges on shipping costs as we prefer to keep our shipping costs low as much as possible to attract our buyers but with FVFs on shipping, is not going to help us much.  eBay really needs to remove it in that area.

Other thing is very disappointing that eBay REQUIRES us to use "tracking" on our items which is not possible.   I am not willing to demand that my buyers have to pay for the more expensive mail service like with tracking for a 4x6" photo.  It is insane to make that requirement.

Other thing is very annoying that eBay expects us to offer RETURNS.  I cannot offer returns on any items as most of them are photos and slides which are very easily copyability.  I am NOT willing to follow eBay's requirements only to lose lots of $$$ or even going out of business in that area.  eBay needs to add those items as not requirements for returns like we cannot returns panties, earrings to the stores.  And since I don't offer returns, I knew that my TRS icon will be disappear in the near future but why should I be "penalized" for that.

As for photo gallery and 12 pictures of each item, it is becoming now insane that eBay requires 12 pictures.  In fact I had an email from eBay saying that I need at least 12 pictures for one specific item (a color 8x10) which is PURE IMPOSSIBLE.  I scanned it on my printer which is excellent and it shows the dings, bend corners, etc., than with my digital camera and it is NOT possible to have more than 1 photo for that 8x10 photo!  I think eBay needs not to get off the wall or way out of line in that area.  If some sellers do show poorly pictures, that is their problems.  I have seen many sellers showing poorly taken pictures but do sell them very well and for lots of $$$!!  Go figure!!

Lastly it is our rights to run our business our own way, we shouldn't have to abide many of eBay's requirements on how to run our businesses.  We should be able to offer the most reasonable cheap mail service, not having to abide by eBay's requirements for "tracking" or expensive mail service.  We want our buyers to be happy.   I felt that if we make our buyers happy, then we are happy and eBay should be happy too but for some reasons eBay just want to be G R E E D Y.  Just be happy that we are able to sell our items than NOT able to sell them.

For example, I have one of US sellers is frantic about having to use eBay shipping to ship one 2x2" slide which charges me $8.00 when in fact, it could be only $2.50 for actual stamps to mail it but this seller have to have to use eBay shipping to get points or whatever.  I felt that it is unfair that eBay make that kind of requirements of any sellers.  I don't want to see it happening to Canadian sellers.

As for Global Shipping Program (GSP), it is an insane scam program and eBay needs to "retire" it really soon.   It is really unfair to offer GSP to US sellers, when in fact, we fully knew we would never be dinged for the so-called import charges on many items like a 2x2" slide, small phtos, magazines, etc.   We prefer to take risks at the custom borders than having to paying the so-called import charges that are going to eBay or whoever's pockets.

Other thing about GSP is that it is horrible that eBay offers to US sellers which make the US sellers thinking they are protected by eBay when in fact, they are NOT protected.

One of US sellers insisted that we have to deal with eBay should any problems arise with the packages by GSP!  Plus many of them didn't realize that by opt in GSP, that their items will be shipped in way much slower mail delivery and that it would be opened by whoever at the warehouse that they must deliver to.  I understand from one Canadian buyers that it was opened and closed in a poor way and that there is no mention of its being paid with import charges.  It make me thinking that if I buy any items with GSP and my packages can be stopped at the custom board and be dinged for the import charges, meaning I would be paying the import charges twice because there is no mention of its already be dinged with the import charges in the first place!   And what more it is unfair to the US sellers because they can be dinged with negative feedback and have their DSRs trashed, all because of GSP.  Is that fair for eBay to "scam" US sellers with GSP and the whole possible problems just because eBay is becoming more greedy?  Time to remove GSP and allow us to take risk at the custom borders ourselves.  Thanks.

More to reply 6.

The total FVF collected by eBay on GST/HST when it is included in the price of the item and postage  is closer to $80 each year.

Have enjoyed being a seller for 10 years, however, lately it seems my site is invisible. Now that the "visitors" show on the summary page, it's easy to see the traffic to my items.  I've had a popular item listed for 4 days and so far have had 0 "visitors" that seems statistically impossible. Also as a seller, it is important to be able to see, on the "advanced" search site, what sells, for how much etc. For more than 2 weeks this site is completely unresponsive, I called ebay a week ago, and got nowhere, spoke to someone just gushing on about, how they appreciate me. Just tried to contact ebay again, and now the "call us" button does not respond.  With these serious technical site issues, it's not possible to continue to sell.

The customer service reps that answer phone calls need to be re-trained... Well, most of them at least

I've been trying to solve a situation for nearly 3 weeks now. One rep told me that I need to reply to the ebay message I've received through my ebay messages, only to find out that no, you can't do that. I received a message back about a week later saying that my message has not been read and that if I call, somebody can assist me.I called back a few times, and was put through to many different "specalists" only to be hung up on.

I love selling on ebay, but if I can't get these ~20 listings up, I can't make any money which means ebay won't be making money off of me 😞

My issue as a NEW Canadian Seller whos sells mainly to Canadians is the New Seller Status which to be relieved of I have to have 25 US transactions 250 US and 90 days active member.

I believe Canada should be included with the US in this category because it would benedit Canadian Sellers just starting off.

2) PayPal Shipping labels

- Have Tracked Packet USA and International not show the postage cost on the label

Personally, I like it the way it is!! So I would say instead: Give the option to show it or not, just like eBay labels in the US.

And while we're at it... why don't we have eBay labels in Canada?

I used to sell here weekly, faithfully since 2001.But for the last 3 years or so..not so much..Only certain items, every few weeks or so.But now I sell and buy elsewhere with greater success.

Reasons for the decision to drop this site as my main selling venue:

Ebay's insidious need to constantly change..it's just got too annoying to keep up.

The fee grab on shipping..as if shipping from Canada wasn't expensive enough.

The lack of knowledge of CSRs when contacted...rather go to the forums were the sellers knew more than they did.

The Search function always being in a state of flux..if after 15 years of using the it and it  frustrates me I can understand how new buyers could easily be turned off by it and give up looking for something.

The change by Ebay from being a site for collectibles/antiques and unique items to being a huge online venue for items I can buy anywhere in any big box office/and or dollar store. Therefore chasing away the buyers looking for the vintage and the unique.

Ebays tolerance for scammers and selling violations in listings. When reported, nothing is rarely done.Meanwhile small sellers have to toe the line or they are suspended almost immediately

DSRs..especially on shipping..sellers have no control once the item is left at the post office and with shipping across the border or internationally, the seller gets blamed if there is a delay.

Ebays hate for the seller and always siding with the buyer..even if there is proof the seller is right in whatever dispute arises.

And..the big one..it just ain't fun anymore.

In conclusion,I will still use the site sporadically,as certain items I sell sometimes have their biggest eyeballs here and the site has helped me get more offline sales. But as for the vintage and unique items, they no longer get listed here as I believe that kind of stuff is not really wanted by management judging by the lack of views and visibility in the last 6 months or so..As for the future,I cannot see Ebay changing to  anything better for myself as a Canadian seller as there is just too much disruption and constant change.

I have and heard of ideas for improvements and features but history has shown that Ebay doesn't really listen to them and usually does the complete opposite which always seems to affect sellers by grabbing more fees or creating more hurdles to sell items.

In retrospect,I really hope Ebay is interested in sellers insights but ..we all have been down this road before.

Interesting.....  I hope this makes someone go huh? So upon further reading and comparing the phone call I made the other day to E-Bay contradicts..... In the new seller limits it says 25 domestic sales does it not....... I live in Canada and when I sell My domestic shipping is for Canada not the US so why does E-Bay tell me It has to be 25 US?

I have to agree that the fvf's for shipping has killed my International sales also. I have stopped selling anything Internationally except lettermail, because the shipping has become so high, and now with fvf's added on, it is just not worth it.

I had a lot of buyers especially from the UK and Australia.

But they don't charge FVF on the international shipping...

Its only the same FVF as if it was a domestic sale.  So you markup intl S&H a little extra and come out ahead since no extra FVF.  CP rates are a big problem to send internatiaonlly, but nothing to do with ebay FVF since they don't charge it on intl shipping.
