Canada Post Strike Update August

Update August 2, 4:14 pm

Dear Canada Post customer,

While we continue to talk, progress remains slow; but our resolve to reach tentative agreements without a work disruption has remained.

The postal system is open for business while negotiations continue. Mail and parcels are being processed and delivered across the country as normal.

Information related to negotiations can also be found at canadapost.ca/update, where you can sign up for email updates. We will continue to keep you updated on a regular basis as we have throughout this process.

Sincerely,

Serge Pitre
Vice-president, Sales

"the surpluses at this time are going into the government's general coffers."

Sorry femme, this is incorrect. It may have been the case once upon a time but not in many many years.

Canada Post pays the government taxes (like any business)  and dividends. The Government of Canada is the sole shareholder of Canada Post.
The dividends may be less than the profits, but the only ones getting that payout are Canadians.

Unlike the shareholders of  UPS, FedEx and the like.

CP has retained all of their "profit"  for years to put back into equipment etc.  Being they cant come close to funding the pension and owe another $1 billion+in debt on top of that, they probably will never again pay the goverment a cent.  Its a lot more likley the feds will have to bail CP out.  They would already be in bankruptcy if they were a private company, the "profit" is a $billion+ loss as soon as they have to make their pension payment obligation

UPS pays a dividend because their union hasn't managed to take every cent they have and they make a real $5 billion annual profit

Latest news.

As requested by the mediators, the parties have agreed to extend the 72-hour notice under Section 87.2 of the Canada Labour Code for 24 hours. This means all job action is postponed until 00:01AM on Tuesday, August 30th. Also, all changes of employment are postponed for the 24-hour period and the collective agreements remain in effect. As we have throughout negotiations, we remain determined to negotiate collective ....

Sorry femme, CP does not.  I posted links to CP financial reports before.  Please take a look at the financial reports.

Canada Post Strike Update August

The last two months have been interesting.

In July CPC had indicated it would start with a lockout... but then withdrew that lockout.action.

Why?

Perhaps how the last strike in 2011 ended will be a hint.  The strike ended before the end of June... There was a concern  that  it would not.

Could the concern have been that MPs and Senators just might have to adjust holiday plans, if everything did not end by the end of June

Spring forward to 2016.....

The schedule for Parliament was checked  and it does not sit from June 24 to September 24... normally....

It is also interesting that the 60 day period for the union ended on the very day that the Liberal caucus met after the holiday period.

It is also interesting that the union has had to deal with Government Finance and Labour people in recent negotiations.... and now this most recent  72 hours... plus a new 24 hours

One can keep asking what is next......  and this 24 hour extension is perhaps critical.

The union actually sounds receptive.... perhaps...  but then what.....  Could it be that someone is finally getting through to the union?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The biggest single problem with CPC-Union negotiations is history....  Perhaps the Union is still stuck in pre-Corporation mode....

Canada Post became a Crown Corporation ... Did that change the CPC-Union relationship?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Could this upcoming review  of Canada Post be critical  with respect to what the Union can... and may ultimately be allowed to do.

As part of the CPC Act  it is stated that CPC must

"conduct its operations on a self-sustaining financial basis''...

Is there anyone that can stop CPC from following this action?   The Union?  The Government?

IF CPC can justify their actions based on the objectives indicated in the Act... then they can continue as they plan....Why not?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Prime Minister has stated that he will respect the negotiation process, and will not interfere... BUT  nine months of negotiation and nothing was resolved.....  perhaps  not until the last 72 hours.... and now 24 hours more....

Perhaps the Union might finally understand  what may happen, first with respect to this strike situation,  and then the review of Canada Post...

and now that the MPs and Senators are back in Ottawa.... What next

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Could it be that the last two months were a test for the Union......The Union has chosen not to work with  CPC, but has been static in its response to everything that CPC wants to do....

Can the Union stop CPC  from anything CPC wants to do....  We shall see..

Or... Does the Union finally see that CPC has made adjustments  that are beneficial to allow CPC to conduct its operations on a self-sustaining financial basis.

The next 24 hours will be critical..... CPC looks in good standing.... but what about the Union?

It has been taken down.   I bet he asked for it to be removed.

It reminded me of when I had a relative just move up to full time at the hospital when Ray days started in ON.  She made a causal comment that some days off were better then not having a job at all, said in front of the wrong people.  She was absolutely blasted, told not to ever say anything like that, it was awful what the gov was doing to them and on and on.  Its a cult like atmosphere the militant ones in the union maintain with intimidation to keep the rest in line, even when a majority don't believe in it

It takes $18.50 per hour to make a modest living and for people to be able to afford to buy products here!

And as said above the workers at the drug store where I go come to the counter when needed and do other work when the postal outlet is not busy.

The outlet is likely not hugely profitable but it attracts many potential customers into the business and they buy other items.

That is why the Canada Post desk is at the back of the store....

People may buy what they see when they walk to the Canada Post desk
