GST and PST Information for New Sellers

I urge all sellers and would be sellers (located in Ontario) to invest the time to review the Retail Sales Tax Act of Ontario:
http://www.trd.fin.gov.on.ca/userfiles/HTML/cma_3_2491_1.html

Sellers (and would be sellers) residing in other provinces should do the same with their respective provincial government sales tax department websites.

All Canadian sellers (and would be sellers) should also invest the time to learn about the advantage of registering for GST/HST by visiting the GST website:
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/business/topics/gsthst/menu-e.html

For more useful tips, please take a look at tax information for small business in Canada:
http://sbinfocanada.about.com/od/gsthst/index_a.htm

Finally, do yourself a favour and read all of it, not bits and pices here and there. Do not select a sentence out-of-context because you like what it states.

To understand the tax system is part of doing business in Canada. If you want to sell on eBay (other than selling personal used goods) you are in fact becoming a small business. To understand the system will save you money and time on the long run.

"...need a business licence right?"

????

Wholesalers will usually require your PST exemption certificate (Vendor Permit number).

A "business licence" is usually a municipal document required if you have customers visiting your place of business. Generally not needed if you sell online and by mail.

You can do it online or by phoning the regional PST office in your area. On Ontario there are 4 to 5 of them across the Province I believe

They are just trying to make sure you are legit.
Usually what they ask for is a 'resale number' or some such thing and your PST number is it.

If you sell less than $ 30,000.00 per year, you do NOT need to register or charge GST.

It is that simple.

You do realize you replied to 10 year old thread ??

with incorrect information.

It's $30 000 in a 12 month period not per year.

And you must charge GST/HST if you are registered (there is no $30000 exemption once you are registered).

You do not charge GST/HST if you are not registered.

That $30,000 total includes sales plus postage.

----------------------------------------------------

It may be advantageous to register for GST./HST..

IF... your input tax credit is greater than the amount paid by buyers.

such as .... you buy your inventory in Canada and pay GST/HST.... and sell to USA buyers  primarily...

and you get a refund of GST/HST  from the government

Mandatory.*

And no.

Until you hit $30,000 in sales it is not mandatory.

If you are buying a lot of material in Canada and exporting it, you are eligible for 'export tax credits' but you would be selling quite a bit before the cost of keeping track of the GST you pay offsets the tax credits you get.

More important,

Do some buying on eBay before you start to sell.

This will build up your feedback which is an important measure of trustworthiness.

Suggested purchases are shipping supplies, a digital metric scale, and a measuring tape.

And keep careful records of all the money you spend on your business as well as of the money you take in.

While GST/HST/PST is not important right now, you will be reporting your profits as income come next April.

Best wishes on your new adventure.
