Union Files Notice of Strike Action (Aug 25th afternoon)

http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/canada-post-union-cupw-strike-mandate-1.3735203

The biggest union at Canada Post says it has filed a 72-hour notice of job action, but is willing to withdraw it if the Crown corporation agrees to an extension on negotiations.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has a strike mandate that is set to expire at midnight eastern time on Thursday.

The union says that in the notice it sent to management it listed its anticipated job actions but has stopped short of members walking off the job.

But there was. Ebay extended delivery estimates as a precaution starting July 2 and then lifted that measure on July 18. Only items shipped with tracking during that time were eligible for late shipment defect- or negative- feedback removal. This was the trouble I ran up against because the measure didn't cover lettermail or untraced items sent before of after that time period.

In my opinion, if ebay Canada really wanted to protect sellers from unwarranted Late Shipment defects, that coverage would include any order sent AT ALL with a delivery timeframe plus and minus about two weeks from the moment that 72-hour strike notice was issued. We have all heard the stories about maverick postal employees or misinformed postal agents who take what they hear in the news and create their own job actions, not the ones sanctioned by the Union or the Corporation, that can then wreak havoc with the mail.

Late Shipment defects are guarded as if they are the very foundation of ebay's success. It's not even metric a buyer can judge. I simply cannot see the harm in giving Canadian sellers a few breaks around this. So they might forgive a seller who doesn't actually deserve to be forgiven on a late shipment defect: what does it matter the two times that might happen versus the dozens of times it's truly warranted? It is more important that ebay stay healthy and viable, is it not? Perhaps try to keep its sellers happy when buyers don't generally give a hoot about answering The Question if they leave feedback at all.

We've all had a rough summer for ebay sales, those who closed as well as those who stayed open. I'd expect ebay Canada to be handed out lollipops to us right about now. And I mean that with no disrespect. No one cares about those Late Shipment defects except the sellers, buyers do not!

Yes they extended the dates in case there was a strike but if you look at the reply that Raphael gave to your question  on August 3 about your defect he said "Our provisions to remove defects in case of a postal disruption weren't put in effect because there was no postal disruption."

So when you talked to cs they had not been told that there were any special defect removal rules. As far as they knew, the rules were the same as always......which they should have been since there was no strike.

As far as I know Rapael has not specified that shipment delay defects caused by a strike would only be removed if there was tracking and I don't believe it is intended to be like that.

Okay, pj, I understand why you came to that conclusion but eBay Customer service told me any defect was ineligible for removal unless it was mailed with tracking between July 2 and 18. Which I told Rahael in my post. Which he said was correct. Meaning that he confirmed that as well. I understood his answer to mean something different than what you understood it to mean. Unless he tells me otherwise, I'm going to assume that what the CS Rep told me (which he confirmed to be correct) is true.

By all means, I'll take this back to the weekly chat for clarification. If sellers will be better protected, let's know that.

Hi handbags, I did that and came up with http://cupw-urban.infopost.ca/canada-post-tables-offer-to-cupw-urban-to-avert-work-disruption/

Is this what you mean? Media probably hasn't gone into detail on the exact offer versus counteroffer because it would not serve much more purpose than a generalization about what the fuss is all about. That's my thoughts.

It's interesting that this escaped my attention until now.

Does this mean the Rural argument is settled? That would certainly explain the reason the first link I posted only dealt with Urban permanent and temporary workers. I'll have to go back and look more closely at it.

EDIT: No. That is a separate offer. http://cupw-rsmc.infopost.ca/canada-post-tables-offer-to-cupw-rsmc-to-avert-work-disruption/

I should have posted this link first. It collects all the offers. I'd not expect this to be public information, like maybe an employee would need to log in to see it but, nonetheless, here is it for everyone to see. All the offers and updates from management's side. I suppose the arbitration ruling escaped my attention because we were out- of-town when it happened, and I wasn't following the news as closely.

Ah yes, I'd not yet read the comments. Those sound pretty explosively anti-Union if they are truly posted by the union members. Bear in mind it's a management-run website. CPC won't go out of their way to clean up anti-Union rhetoric, I wouldn't think.

interesting, to be sure. It matches what I've heard from people who work at Canada Post.

Any columnist that buys into the gender pay equity argument isn't worth reading, in my opinion. I honesty believe that was bluster of no substance.

Personally, I'm not pro-union nor pro-cpc.

My only concern with this whole mess is that if CPC working stops in any way, I'm in deep trouble.

If there's a full blown strike, then I'm done with ebay(for now at least). I'll have to move and find a new home for me and my cats.

Some kind of rotating strike wouldn't be as bad, but still, the stuff I sell is very odd(mostly) and there is a very small local market for it.

What makes it worse for me is that I've had several strokes the last year, my wife left me 9 months ago and I have no family to speak of.

Just get this done guys(both CUPW & CPC), it has gone on long enough.

I think most of us are in the same philosophical boat as you. It's hard to wax poetic about pro-union or pro-business when you're worried that you can't put food on your own table because of a work disruption that affects you but one which you have no control over.

If I may offer some unsolicited and personal advice, it sounds like you may be in a bad way health-wise. Have you applied for long-term disability with CPP? It's the disability pension from the federal government. You will need the support of your doctor and any specialists that you see, a long, completed form from the federal government, a cheque likely for your doctor so he/she can complete it for you, and a letter that you write that outlines very specifically the reasons you are not able to work full-time. Don't hold back on account of pride. The application is long and daunting and then takes forever in the approval stage. Start early.

Good luck to you.

The cs was right about the rules for that particular time period.  Had there been a strike at the time, the rules would have been different.  I think that post 40 on that same thread confirms that.  However, I do hope that you ask Raphael  again to confirm so that neither of us is giving out the wrong info.

I'm definitely going to bring it up on Wednesday. It's important to know the the facts of it because it stands to potentially affect us all, and I don't mind admitting that I am incorrect when I am wrong. In this case, in fact, I do hope I'm wrong.

Contract talks continue between Canada Post and its largest union, but neither side is hinting as to whether any progress has been made.

Writing about the Canadian mail labor dispute feels a bit like "the boy who cried wolf" as the threat of a mail strike or lockout has loomed since July. But now it's a reality, though the disruption that is set to begin on Monday will not be a complete shutdown of mail service.
