RCMP say a bus full of passengers has rolled on a highway near Redwater, northeast of Edmonton.

Sgt. Patrick Webb says there are injuries and some people are trapped in the bus.

Kerry Williamson of Alberta Health put the number of people hurt at 30 — most of them with minor injuries — but several are considered serious.

Ms. Williamson says at least a dozen ambulances are on the way.

A spokesman for STARS air ambulance says the injuries are “very serious” and two people are being flown to hospital.

“There are multiple patients on scene,” said spokesman Cam Heke.

“We are transporting one adult male to ... hospital and we anticipate returning to the scene,” he said.

“We did leave two medical practitioners ... and we will be taking an emergency physician back with us when we return to the scene.”

Police warn motorists that Highway 28 is closed and will remain so for several hours.

It’s requested that all vehicles stay out of this area.

Highway 28 was also involved in a serious accident in May, 2005, when a bus carrying oilsands workers coming home from Fort McMurray, Alta., was hit by a semi-trailer near Gibbons, just down the road from Redwater.

Six people were killed and almost two dozen were injured.
