Maid of the Mist Steamboat company loses deal to operate Niagara Falls tours

The Niagara Parks Commission announced Wednesday it had awarded a 30-year land-lease agreement for boat tour operations in the Niagara Gorge to Hornblower Canada, a California-based company.

As a result of this decision, our business, with a 165 year history of service to tourists from around the world, may soon come to an end," company president Christopher Glynn said in a release.

The new deal is expected to generate over $500 million in revenue for the parks commission over the life of the contract, an increase of more than $300 million from previous contracts, including $67 million in the first five years

"Ontario's Liberal cabinet ordered the commission to open the tour boats to competitive bidding in 2009 after complaints about the unfairness of the untendered contract."

Nope it's McGuinty's fault, giving Canadian jobs away to the Americans.

Not really much different than the RCMP licensing the Mountie image to Walt Disney Co. and not even giving Canadian Advertisers a shot at it. How fair is that - not to mention unpatriotic. Like everything else - money is money.

So typical of McGuinty and his Liberals.

Like giving  7 billion to Korea to build wind mills.

Or the huge number of foulups in the healthvare system, like ORNGE.  and Ehealth.

Toronto's transit system TTC  sacked their General Manager (will have to pay him around $500,000 severance) because he favored light rail transportation over proposed subway expansion.

With the Drummond report recommending deep spending cuts to fight Ontario's growing deficit, will McGuinty fork over billions $$$ in provincial funding towards costly subway lines?  I'm sure that he covet's Torontarian's support enough to do so.

Yes, what a mess they have in Toronto.  And Harper has nothing to do with it! ;)

You have a mayor (strongly Conservative) who wants a subway while council favours light rail.

That same mayor has been cutting budgets to library, parks, swimming pools, recreation centres, etc... to save a few dollars and yet agrees to waste half a million dollar by firing the TTC general manager "without cause".

I see a problem with his priorities and suspect he will be one of those "one term" mayor.

The decision is a major reversal for the commission, which quietly gave the Maid of the Mist company an untendered 25-year contract extension in 2008.

Ontario's Liberal cabinet ordered the commission to open the tour boats to competitive bidding in 2009 after complaints about the unfairness of the untendered contract.

If the Maid Of The Mist owners were allowed to participate in a competetive bidding process and lost to Hornblower, then, they blew it - seriously underestimating the value of the service - by many millions.

And McGuinty's fault?  Had any other party brought up the fact that the bidding process was NOT offered on a competitive basis, many here would be lauding them with praise.  Shame on you Dalton for allowing a contract without bidding.  Seems like he did the right thing and is still wrong.

And as for Rob Ford, unless he loses some more weight, he may be declared as a party all by himself.  As far as I am concerned, he belongs to only one party - the insanity party.

The day Niagara Falls ran dry:Newley discovered photos show the moment the iconic waterfall came to a standstill.

It's been 42 years; previously unseen set of photos of the mighty Niagara Falls reduced to nothing more than a barren cliff-top have surfaced. The stark images reveal North America 's iconic - and most powerful - waterfall to be almost as dry as a desert.

In June 1969, U.S. Engineers diverted the flow of the Niagara River away from the American side of the falls for several months.

Stark: A completely dry Niagara Falls never seen before or since the six months in July 1969 when U.S. Engineers set about restructuring the American side of the twin landmark.
