zero feedback buyers - do you sell to them?
Feb 22, 2012 10:03 AM

Lucky me..

Yet another auction won by a zero feedback buyer who has no intention of paying.

The buyer in this case joined on Feb 17th, won the auction for $100 on Feb 18th and here I am awaiting them to pay...

The cost to me so far as been the downtime of waiting to get paid and the usual percentage of $8 or so.

Why does eBay allow new users to buy without having measures in place for guaranteed payment?   And then make it seem like it's My Fault for not getting paid.

First I have to file an unpaid item which takes 4 days, then wait for 7 days for that too clear.

OR I could just cancel the transaction after 2 days and wait another 7 days for that to clear.

My new favorite tactic is to contact 0 FB bidders about their payment method and if I don't get a reply in 24 hours, I block them from bidding again.

Am I the villan here?   what do you do in these circumstances?

"zero feedback buyers - do you sell to them?"

NO

There is no mechanism to block new buyers or buyers with zero feedback.

Since the vast majority of listings on eBay is at fixed price (not auction) and since the majority of transactions on eBay comes from fixed price listings (not auction) a seller cannot prevent most purchases by a new buyer.

Go with the flow and do not waste time or worry too much about "stuff" you cannot control.

Didn't we all have to start at zero?

Zero FB has nopthing to do with it. Did you set your preferences to require a Paypal account? That helps eliminate scam buyers.

The real problem is using a non-secure method of selling. If you want to use auctions, factor in a non-paying percentage. That is simply part of the process. If you would like 100% payment, use BIN.

I've sold to sellers with zero feedback and every one of them has paid, so I see no need to block them. In fact, most of them have become repeat buyers.

Everyone starts with zero feedback.

I would agree, the majority of 0 Feedback buyers pay. Ones that don't just file a UID. Frustrating but thats the way the wheel turns in the eBay universe.

Many 0 Feedback buyers have also have separate buying & selling IDs.

my_igloo - BIN doesn't guarentee payment either. I've had to file 4 UID in the last 3 weeks on purchases made with BIN. (2 paid, 2 didn't)

Another potential issue with selling to zero/low feedback buyers is the feedback they give.

BUT, not all newbies are trouble.

didn't we all start at zero... well maybe we did, but I don't recall renegging on any purchases.

I once had the exact same question from three different buyers all with different UID's at zero feedback.

I did adjust the preferences about 6 years ago so maybe it's time to revisit them and see if I can tweak them a bit.

Thanks for your input.

Only 4 days since the sale?  Bit impatient aren't you?  If you want immediate payment then list it as BIN, immediate payment required and it takes them straight to paypal.  If they don't pay, it stays listed for someone else to buy.  It usually takes the newbies a few days to set up their paypal account.  4 days is nothin!  Of course I sell to 0 fb buyers.  Like said earlier.  We were all there once.

I've had NO problems with buyers with zero FB.

The most demanding buyers are the old timers.

They tend to be decent, but IMO they also return more items simply because they can and not because the item was described incorrectly or whatever.

They know how to buy on line.

Newbies are more intimidated.  Enjoy it while it lasts.

Cat. BIN with immediate payment.

The last time I used auctions was a couple years ago. Maybe 30% were non paying bidders, at prices much lower than I get in my store with BIN and immediate payment.

When store inventory was incorporated into core search, the rationale for auctions vanished.

I have an issue going right now with ebay buyer with positive feedback of 36.  She ordered numerous items over period of a week, then did not pay.  So, I processed an unpaid items claim.  After 4 days, she orders something else.  I have tried contacting her with no luck.  She does not answer my emails at all.  I suppose I should block her but hate to do so incase the negative feedback starts flying, lol  Its great that a buyer has that kind of control eh!

I like seeing zero feedback buyers since they are new buyers.

Hopefully a new buyer will know enough to bid very close to the end of the auction so those other sellers with   a serious paranoa problem will not have time to cancel their bids.   If the seller will not sell the buyer should provide the correct feedback to warn other potential buyers of the unethical seller.

I have sold to the 0 FB, I will continue to sell to them.  I know that I have a 50/50 chance of the sale going smoothly, or of it going south fast.  I always try to get into a conversation, help them figure out what they are doing, and for the most part in works in my favour, and I have had repeat buyers/customers. The ones that go bad, well, I do get the funds back, relist and get on with it... as someone else said we were all new once - someone helped us, showed patience and we are still here.......

I have had non payments from 0 FB folks and folks with good FB.  I was a 0 FB once...anyone else???

Sometimes I messed up, sometimes I was thanked for bringing something to the sellers attention.  Self education was how I learned to get it right.  Of course I still screw up.

In my listings I state   "ASK QUESTIONS" .

I wish!  I have had two buyers in the last six months who paid by eCheck on PayPal.  Both cancelled the eCheck one day before it was due to clear.  Neither paid for their items.  One got an unpaid strike.  The other left eBay.

0 FB buyer ... I love !!

If they do not pay, I open an unpaid case so its not a big deal.

BUT .. if they pay and you are nice to them, let them know their item is packaged, let them know it is shipped, hoping they will be please with the product ... then there are good chances they will buy again from you because they will feel secure.  They might prefer buying from you again knowing you are a good seller then taking the risk to buy from someone else.

seedhouse: Block her now. If she does not pay for the older bids, the UID prevents her from leaving FB for those. If she has a newer purchase that she has paid, she can leave FB.

And more importantly, she can leave DSRs.

I've had to file 4 UID in the last 3 weeks on purchases made with BIN. (2 paid, 2 didn't)

That's my experience with UIDs too. Half will pay, apologize for being slow, and leave positive feedback. The others disappear (and are blocked.).
