Top Rated Seller Badge Change
Feb 21, 2012 10:14 AM

I have recently lost my Top Rated Seller Badge on the Ebay.com site (still retain it on Ebay.ca). I offer a discount to my U.S. and International buyers since our shipping rates here in Canada are so expensive and I want to attract buyers. My dsr is 4.9 in the shipping and handling section of the feedback, just wondering if anyone has any advice on the matter.

Spike,
Sorry, I can't offer any explanation or advice.
FWIW I also score 4.9 on s&h charges (and 5.0 in the other categories) but retain my TRS and PS status on both eBay.ca and eBay.com. Go figure.

Not related to that but all your current listings don't have the shipping section set up properly. nothing for canada, and some are USA and Japan only.
At that sales level not sure how you could lose trs on .com but not .ca other then not having 100 USA only sales in the past 12 months
makes absolutely no difference to you anyway, fees are the same as long as you keep the .ca trs and you don't have any fp listings that would have palcement affected on .com.

I'd suggest that, given your collectible products, that you offer your Japanese customers Air Mail only. If the price is too high, they will not buy, but this is a market where price is not the question. The Japanese customer is not a bargain-hunter. You may be losing points because the shipping is so slow by surface.
And for US customers I would suggest being less apologetic about the cost and speed of delivery. The price is the price. Put the normal delivery time in working days in your description, without apology.
If you feel uncomfortable switch the price and the shipping.Instead of a $5 sheet with $10 shipping offer a $10 sheet with $5 Flat Rate shipping . Or a $15 sheet with Free Shipping.
You can use Calculated Shipping for your Canadian customers and Flat Rate for Foreign sales. Your FVF on shipping will be calculated on the lower of the two.

Maintaining TRS status isn't the holy grail although it's nice to have.
I presume you lost TRS on .com due to low ratings for shipping cost. Thing is, reducing your shipping costs somewhat will make all the people who already give you 5's and a few 4's even happier while the buyers who have given you low ratings in the past will continue to do so.
I haven't looked at your listings but I always say that free shipping is not appropriate much of the time and free shipping solely to avoid low ratings is really not a wise move.
perhaps even if you charge less than nothing for shipping

Many thanks for the replies and suggestions, I will look it all over and make some changes. The only part that I would not change is offering only the airmail option for Japan buyers. I have many repeat buyers from when I began selling 8 years ago and 99% opt for the less expensive Surface Mail option. They have been very gracious and patient with the time it takes for their package to arrive and in fact I've never been asked "Where's my parcel".
Again, thank you for the helpful advice.

Does your dashboard have 100 sales/$3000 total to USA located buyers only?
To lose it over shipping cost would take 3 low dsrs to USA buyers, with the only way to still keep in on .ca being to have over 500 transactions to anywhere.

As regards airmail vs surface, Oldspike's experience exactly mirrors mine - and that goes for practically all my overseas customers. Little wonder, when the price difference between surface and air is 125% and more.
Femme, I hope you take Oldspike's message to heart.

Most of my overseas sales go LetterPost which is an Air Mail service.

Femme,
You're lucky most of your items meet the size and weight requirements of Letterpost. (But I hope you remember that it's 53% cheaper to send a package weighing between 200 and 250 g overseas by Light Packet than Letterpost.) And good for you that you ignore Canada Post's ridiculous edict that Letterpost must not contain goods.

Oldspike, I'm curious. Why do you ship only to the USA, Canada, and Japan? Why include Japan but not other easy- to-deal-with countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia?

My reason for only shipping to Canada, U.S. and Japan is that when I began selling, I shipped worldwide and most International destinations opted for the much slower and much less expensive Surface Mail option. I would give the approximate time for delivery (4-7 weeks) and despite this after a few weeks I would receive emails from some buyers asking where there items was, I refunded money for 3 items to buyers who stated that there item never arrived to 3 different countries which Canadapost later confirmed had been delivered. As mentionned in my previous note my repeat and new Japan buyers have always been gracious and patient in regards to the arrival of their parcels.

Spike,
I wonder how Canada Post knew that those three items reported as not having been received were in fact delivered. I am presuming, of course, that they were not sent Xpresspost or Priority Worldwide.
Canada Post's claim that we can expect delivery overseas of surface mail in "4 up to 6 weeks" is grossly misleading and, in the case of Australia, for example, is hogwash. In my experience, surface Small Packets to Australia normally take 8-12 weeks and 15 weeks is not unheard of.
Once surface mail leaves Canadian shores, it is entirely out of the hands of Canada Post and I cannot see how they can justify any reliable estimate of delivery time, much less ascertain that the mail has been delivered.
In fairness, in my experience as a regular user of overseas surface mail (only because air mail is prohibitively expensive), I have to say that hardly any mail is ever "lost", i.e. disappears without trace. In 11 years of selling on eBay, only two of my shipments (both Small Packets, one to Italy, the other to France) were allegedly not received and were not returned to me (admittedly, I do not deal in scamworthy material). I am always highly suspicious of INR claims but, of course, we sellers have no recourse but to refund. To give them their due, again in my experience, Canada Post always isues refunds promptly and even refunds the postage in cases where mail was delivered but only after an inordinately long transit time (I never forgo the opportunity to let CP know of those cases).
The Japanese are known to be among the most courteous people in the world so I can see why you are happy to have them as customers but I would urge you to widen your circle of customers and sell to other countries overseas. I don't think you'll be burnt very often at all.

Some simple advice for the OP.
Offer your good worldwide and DON'T offer Surface mail except to the USA.
Let your buyers decide if they want to pay the cost or not and be happy that those that do decide to pay the price will actually get their items in a reasonable time frame.

In any event, Recped, as someone who uses the USPS for overseas shipping, you have no moral authority to give advice on using Canada Post services.
I need "moral authority" to comment?
If you are a fan of surface mail for overseas why don't you offer it in your your listings?
In fact you don't specify any shipping information for overseas, that leaves those buyers to ask or guess, is that good customer service?
By the way, I don't use USPS.

Recped,
1. I am no fan of overseas surface mail.
2. Because I find the eBay shipping calculator to be unreliable or downright wrong in many cases, I specify the shipping charges to Canada, USA and overseas in the body of every single listing. For any shipment weighing more than 500 g, I specify the surface postage only, both to USA and overseas, but prospective bidders are advised to contact me for details of shipping costs.
3. If you don't (any longer) use USPS for your international mail, I withdraw my comment unreservedly. So do you use Canada Post now? If so, you have my sympathy.

Thanks but I only use Canada Post for domestic and the occasional heavy Expredited USA. For both the service is excellent and the price on the Expedited USA is pretty good (domestic parcels not so much!).

As a buyer I couldn't care less about badges, stars, dancing bears or whatever. If I find a deal that I want I bid on it or I buy it. I couldn't care less about the badges or the rest of the bling that the seller has, the bottom line is what it's going to cost me. Paypal is supposed to protect me from frauduent sellers.
I figure that badges, etc in some kind of incentive to get sellers to spend more on auctions...........the buyer doesn't care and why would we.

"the buyer doesn't care and why would we."
If the reputation of a seller is not important or relevant to you, that is your choice. You have the right to spend your money whichever way you want.
On the other hand, many (most likely most) buyers purchasing items online from a total stranger want to know a bit more about the seller's reputation. When you buy online from Dell or LL Bean or Chapters, you know the seller's reputation and can expect a quick and fair resolution of any problem that may arise. When buying from a stranger on eBay, the risks are obviously greater.
While paying with a credit card or through PayPal offers some limited degree of protection, there is no substitute for prudence and common sense.
Once again it is your choice.

tia_bacs,
In regards to your comments on the badges, stars, dancing bears...I was not concerned about losing a "Cute" little badge beside my user name, the part that I was concerned about was losing the Top Rated Status on the .com site which offers my items higher visibility when an item is searched and the additional discounts on Ebay fees.
