eBay DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) shipment hit with new 50% tariff -- who pays?
Summary: baz_laz_1115 is concerned about a potential 50% tariff on a package purchased from the US and shipped to Canada through eBay's DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) service. Initially, eBay calculated the import fees as $0, and now there's uncertainty about who is responsible for the tariff duty. marnotom! suggests if the item went through a customs pre-clearance process typical of DDP shipments, the tariff might not apply, as many items are pre-cleared to expedite customs. They acknowledge this is speculative advice.
I bought a package from the US that is in transit to Canada as of today. eBay has handed it off to Asendia. The package will be subject to a 50% tariff when it crosses the border. At checkout with eBay, I selected the option to “prepay duties,” but eBay calculated the import fees as $0 (this was over a week ago).
It appears that eBay is sending my package using a DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) shipping service meaning all applicable duties were supposed to be collected at checkout. Anyone have thoughts as to who is ultimately responsible for paying the tariff in this situation (me through eBay/Asendia, or eBay pays for it because it's DDP)? Thanks all!

·3 weeks agoWell, seeing as you’re looking for thoughts, mine are that in order to have your item considered DDP, it would have gone through a customs pre-clearance process, so your view that the item “would be subject to a 50% tariff when it crosses the border” wouldn’t apply.
A lot of items cross into Canada DDP pre-cleared as it expedites customs processing at the border. As this procedure is pretty commonplace, I would guess that there’s going to be some wiggle room allowance for items that went through customs pre-clearance before they crossed over into Canada.
Keep in mind that this is a guess.

OP3 weeks agoPossibly subject to the Sept 8 retaliatory tariffs (but I did read about an exemption if the product was "in transit" to Canada as of yesterday).
