HST on top of EIS shipping charges?
Summary: himmicane expresses frustration with being charged HST on both the item value and shipping cost for a used product purchased from the USA via eBay International Shipping, questioning if this constitutes gouging. pjcdn2005 explains that GST/HST is a service charge applicable on full shipping charges per Canada customs requirements. himmicane further clarifies that if any part of the service occurs in Canada, the entire amount is subject to GST/HST. Other participants, such as lucky-louis and reallynicestamps, discuss the responsibility of tax payments, with the consensus being that eBay follows Canadian tax laws. mrdutch1001 assures that while it may seem like gouging, it is simply taxation procedure.
I bought something used from the USA and it was shipped via Ebay International Shipping. I can understand being charged HST on the value of the item (though used), but also being charged HST on the shipping cost just doesn't seem right. I can maybe understand paying it on the portion that covers the cost of moving the item in Canada once it crosses the border, but not on the entire amount. What gives, is this gouging correct?

Shipping is a service.
Some provinces charge taxes on services some do not.

GST stands for Goods and SERVICES and services would include customs brokerage which is what eIS does for you. It is also a Seller Protection program, but that doesn't involve the buyer usually.
Your provincial sales tax may or may not have included services, it varied from province to province.

·2 years agoThe gst/hst is a service charge so it is on the full amount that you pay. I've bought from non ebay stores that used couriers who charge tax on delivery. In those cases I paid gst on the entire shipping charge so eBay is only doing what is required by Canada customs.
