Can't add item - Weird error message
Summary: A participant reported a problem with the UPS service causing errors when adding items on eBay. jtg204 suggested either removing UPS as a shipping option or waiting for a fix. timelesstechtrove experienced similar issues and mentioned the inconvenience of alternative carriers, calling for a timely resolution. Concerns were also raised about Canada Post not applying discounts, adding to challenges faced by Canadian sellers. Attempts to contact eBay support were unsuccessful, further frustrating users.
This is the first time I see this. I used the exact same settings on multiple items before.
I even created a new policy to test...
Here is the business policy

International
Something changed? Bug ?

·3 months agoI haven't even bothered trying, and I'm likely going to leave UPS off the shipping policy for good. Rarely have they been chosen for domestic shipments, I prefer Canada post, and CP rates are competitive with UPS. This 'glitch' has been somewhat of a blessing in disguise.
drath999
·3 months agoI was able to re-add UPS for my shipping policies. Seems to be working for me?
*EDIT* Ah, seems to be working for policies, but not when doing edits/additions to the listings themselves. Ugh.

Well, eBay doesn't allow UPS anymore it seems... We can't configure our items to use that shipping method for weeks now. They should entirely remove anything UPS related from their website, at this point.
We can still buy labels.... at least there's that.
trhall_03
·3 months agoHate to say it, but removing UPS entirely from the shipping options, specifically international, would kill sales for me. While I would take Fedex over UPS any day of the week, UPS rates are far better than Fedex. Now if only Canada post could get back to international shipping, that would be great. The 'tracked packet' made shipping to the States very competitive.

·3 months agoHaven't attempted a listing with domestic UPS services enabled yet, but apparently the glitch is fixed. The agent I was working with more than two weeks ago sent a message today giving an update. With it being almost a month to fix the glitch, WOW is all I can say.
jtg204
·3 months agoNot fixed for revisions at least. Still gives error. Might take time.
jtg204
·3 months agoWhat is working though, is business policies I can add UPS Standard back if it is associated with items that would have triggered the error and would have failed to update the policy before. Then unable to revise or create listings when the policy has UPS.

As an FYI Canadapost only has access to 30 countries for Intl tracked. There are a couple extra but are mostly non starters as for as countries go for sales. As far as I know Norway is still unresolved as being included when using eBay Labels. That issue goes back to mid last year.
If you want to ship using ebay labels to any additional countries you would have to use Small Packet Ground/Surface/Air which are untracked and can take up to 6 weeks to arrive or Xpresspost which is substantially more expensive even with the discount. (Calculated Shipping.)
Best to confirm with CP tool for checking service availability.

It throws the dimensional error when any dimension exceeds "10", and in terms of "cm" this would be everything!! They are now working on a fix!!!!!!!!!

·4 months agoI am a very patient person, and not one to vent, but this has gone too far. This issue began for me on March 18. I've been on the phone with eBay support 5 times over the last two weeks. Every time I get the same spiel, that it's affecting other users too, and expect it to be fixed within 3 days. I've been with eBay for 26 years, and not once have I ever had any issues which couldn't be rectified quickly. This is highly disappointing, and frustrating, that a company the size of eBay cannot have an army of techs to fix glitches within their system in a reasonable amount of time. I am paying a subscription to have an eBay store, and have a few hundred more items to list, but I can't-so this is costing me money. It is critical to have accurate, low cost shipping prices shown to customers, so the various workarounds just don't cut it.
drath999
·4 months agoNevermind, don't do this. It actually glitches out your listings and shipping policies. They physically move to the copy, but don't show for each, and the "listings" count doesn't update properly.
drath999
·4 months agoStill broken for me too. I've been testing if it has been fixed just by adding the service again. Interestingly, it says "failed the update and have been reassigned to a copy of this policy with previous details." except it doesn't actually do that. So it's pretty easy to confirm if it has been fixed or not yet.
timelesstechtrove
·4 months agoI called eBay about this today to get an update. My call was disconnected. When they called back, nobody was there. I gues they are having more technical issues than just this one. This has gone from an annoyance to infurating.
@devon@ebay where are you?

·4 months agoHere we are March 29, and still no updates from eBay!
trhall_03
·4 months agoThis is ridiculous. This has been going on for 10 days, and after multiple calls to ebay with tickets being issued, the work around of deleting UPS from the domestic shipping options was found here. Their advice was to delete both UPS and Canada Post leaving only Fedex, the most expensive option of them all, and we all know that isn't good for business. To add, ebay has left us completely in the dark with the issues, offering zero updates, and only giving the rudimentary response of 'wait 24 to 72 hours for the issue to resolve'. Ebay... do better.

·4 months agoMy last 2 US sales in the past 48hrs have major problems. In one case, the buyer can't complete the sale as none of the addresses are applicable. I assume EIS issue (odd that it allowed the sale to be completed first). Yes, I emailed the team and also tried to chat for resolution. I'm sure there are hoops I could jump through after cancelling to make it work but I agree, as above, this needs a little more attention and transparency. If there are other viable work-arounds or things we should be avoiding, letting us know is a step in the right direction. I recently killled and reloaded my ship policies which seemed to help at first but now I'm wondering if it might have made a bigger mess.
EIS question - If only set up for Purolator for US shipments and enrolled in EIS, does USPS or CP need to be selected in order for EIS to be active? I tried adding a policy on the .COM side also and it didn't seem to help. My account can post either or but sticking with .CA listings seems to be the best for me.
There must be someone from IT watching this that can comment at least in part....?
treasurechest0114
·4 months agoPlease refer back to my last comment. Set your listing up for UPS and put in a set price. This bypasses the calculated shipping issue which is at the heart of the problem. EIS will show your listing on eBay.com once you make the change. If someone buys simply print the labels as you would and refund the excess shipping fees. I say that as you have to set the shipping fee higher than you normally would to protect yourself in Canada. EIS to the hub will be much cheaper.
I would think you can only use Canada Post or UPS for EIS.
jtg204
·4 months agoFor EIS to be active, you only need to set up domestic shipping services. When an EIS order is placed, eBay automatically selects your lowest-cost domestic shipping option to cover delivery to the hub in Mississauga.

·4 months agoYou can use rate tables and just select standard shipping. That will allow you to use whatever carrier you want. They're a bit of a pain to set up, but they seem to work quite well once you get them figured out. For me, sometimes I make a buck or so on shipping and sometimes I lose a buck. Most seem to be within about 50c or so of my actual cost. I regularly ship using Canada Post and UPS, with the odd package going out via Purolator, CanPar, and ICS.
treasurechest0114
·4 months agoThat is a viable solution if you are wanting to stick to calculated shipping but I agree 100 percent with your hesitation. To add to why I never brought that up and simply recommended a fixed price is because FedEx often hits sellers with surcharges after the fact. I.e eBay labels tells your the cost is 23 dollars and when you get the bill it's much higher.
I would fix your shipping costs with UPS to what you are comfortable with. Set it a bit higher for protection and I'm sure it will be less than Canada post rack rates and FedEx. Then if someone buys refund them the difference and turn it all into a positive buying experience.
If you get a buyer in a rural area and the shipping fee is nasty, beyond your set price with UPS then switch over to Shippo and buy a label using Canada post. Message your buyer to explain and most people understand and in fact prefer Canada post anyways. Especially if the live in an apartment.
My advice would be to not waste your time dealing with front line eBay staff on this issue. They have not been told when a resolution will come and their only choice is to try and help by sending a ticket. We all know that ticket goes nowhere. I always image a dark room with a glow of a computer screen with no one at the desk. On the screen is all out tickets, lol
trhall_03
·4 months agoI appreciate the reply and suggestions, unfortunately that sounds like a lot more work than it should be, as well as complicated. I'm ok with dumping UPS domestically provided everything else remains the same with no hidden glitches. While I haven't paid too much attention to price difference, Canada post more times than not has the best rates, especially within the Province, and if not best, very competitive with UPS. To be honest, I can't remember the last time I shipped anything domestically with UPS. I know I prefer it, and I think customers do as well.

·4 months agoStill an ongoing issue. I just tried to revise a listing on my phone and it said:
"Oops, looks like you missed something. Please fix the problem below.
Package dimensions"
I can't remove UPS as that's our primary shipper. I just sold something to ship through them. What is the ETA for resolving this? Why is it taking so long?
treasurechest0114
·4 months agoYes it's really frustrating and there is no ETA on a resolution so I suspect one day we will wake up and it will be resolved. What I find unbelievable is there has been no information flow from eBay to sellers about what I feel is a major issue. A notification announcement would be a basic expectation along with short term stop gaps to help manage through things.
Most people understand technical outages and are sympathetic as long as it's communicated in a timely fashion. Instead we are left to our own devices and imagination.
Anyways, nothing much we can do but wait and hope it's resolved soon.
timelesstechtrove
·4 months agoYeah, this is maniacal. I have a pile of stuff to post and basically stuck in limbo. Every monring I wake up I check to see if I can even edit an exisiting item... I wish to change prices but can't even do that. Extremely frustrating that we don't even have an update, and this thread is marked as "solved" to say the least.
treasurechest0114
·4 months agoThe only thing you can do is create a shipping policy with a set price using UPS or Canada post. That bypasses the dimension calculation which is at the heart of the problem. This will allow you to list or alter listings. To protect yourself list the set cost to ship higher than you normally would. At least it will be lower than the Canada post rack rate in most cases.
You won't get any sales but it will allow you to list and make changes. If you do get a sale simply reimburse the buyer the difference to turn the experience into a positive one. Also by doing that you will show up to international buyers..,,not that this will help with sales but you never know.
drath999
·4 months agoStill broken for me. I had to just remove UPS for now. Interestingly, I only had to remove my UPS Canada services. This bug does not affect the US-based UPS services.
treasurechest0114
·4 months agoYep, same here, still down. I contacted eBay and it's a known issue and apparently they are working on it. The problem is Canada post is showing the rack rate so no one is buying anything at full shipping price. Thankfully expedited lite, strangely enough, is showing the proper rate.
imteresting to hear that the US side for UPS is working. I only sell through eBay international shipping as I don't want the hassle of US buyers being surprised by those nasty custom clearance fees. As well as making life simple with the tariffs.
backpacktreasures
·4 months agoRemoving UPS is not a solution. It is a temporary workaround for a problem that seems to have many other issues other than UPS not functioning correctly in ebay.
treasurechest0114
·4 months agoWhat a mess. Buyers are seeing rack rates for Canada post and to top it all off foreign buyers are showing "shipping not specified".
I'm shipping to the hub and the cost with Canada Post is over 30 dollars, buyer paid 17. I can buy a ups label for the proper discounted amount which is what I have done.
The only temporary solution I've found is bypass calculated shipping on the listing. That means you have to offer free shipping or a set price to ship so no sales until they get this fixed. Obviously a huge risk if we fix our shipping costs across the board.
I tested it out with a comic as a potential US buyer contacted me asking for a shipping quote which initially confused me. I'm thinking why don't they just look at the listing? Checked it out and confirmed "shipping not specified". I slapped in a set price and now it shows up for international shipping.
The other thing that is messed up is I've noticed that for expedited lite packages sent to the hub are being overcharged. All 5 labels came back with an extra 2 dollars or so from their original quoted amount. I suggest everyone check their label charges to see if you have impacted.

·4 months agoThere was a message this morning about discounted rates to hub via UPS. Unsure how much rates deviate for from non major points.
Western Canadian sellers can now access even more discounted rates on eBay Labels when they ship to our eBay International Shipping hub using UPS.
This might be fine for someone if there were guarantees the same amount noted at label creation would be the same at charged time. Same goes for Fedex.
