Hello,
I use Chit Chats Express to send most of my packages to the US now but I have an issue with them-each item requires the manufacturer details and a lot of what I sell is vintage and impossible to find that info. I had one the other day where the designer closed her business in 2011. Just try to get a street address when it's back that far in time. I've talked to them and they say that's what's required now. Sending with UPS is the only other option- they are more expensive but at least they don't need that manufacturing info. I'm wondering why Chit does when even Canada Post didn't before they went on strike. It certainly makes it even harder to ship now with all the other challenges.

·11 months agoOn Sept 3rd, before the current CP stoppage, I sent out via Chit Chats a 1950s train Air Brake manual to the US. The title page had the name of the company and their address (in the 1950s, of course) 230 Park Ave., New York. I entered that as the manufacturer's address. I entered the proper HS Code (Manual Book) and described it as vintage manual. It took 15 days to arrive at the destination in the US. I'm not sure though if I would try that again during the strike.
I have no idea if they (the chit chat broker) actually do an address lookup now. They didn't in early September.

OP11 months agowell, even if they do an address lookup if it's something so old that the place doesn't exist anymore they won't be able to get anywhere anyway. I have had to put NONE for province for a knitting book that was made in Germany and it accepted that. . Luckily most of my items do have some sort of address but it sure is a pain in the you-know-what to have to come up with this info. The one I referred to originally that closed in 2011 I was only able to put in the state & zip code (just picked a Florida one) and put unknown for the street address and that was accepted by the program.

·11 months agoStallion doesn't accept no province being filled in, I generally use the city in the province field as well and it accepts that.

·11 months agoI believe Chitchats takes stuff across the border themselves and therefore they have different requirements that are imposed on them. UPS probably uses their own brokerage service to deal with it (which also makes it more expensive).

·11 months agoChit Chats (and Stallion Express which I use) have their own trucks to bring items across the border. They have a broker, and the broker requires the manufacturer information. According to Chit Chats, if you don't know the manufacturer you can't ship it with them. Canada Post does not have such strict requirements, you can photograph it and say where it's from, they charge more for brokerage to get it across the border, but there's flexibility to ship just about anything with Canada Post. Of course because of the strike that option is currently null.
I wouldn't recommend cancelling orders. What I would say, is that if you have a lot of information about your product and you're missing the manufacturer, no one will be checking exactly which manufacturer 50 years ago made the item. They go partly on whatever reasonable.
I have old coins, I know they're made in the US, but might not know the exact mint. I had one that I knew was made in Cincinnati but I didn't know for sure which mint. There is a mint in Cincinnati, I went with that.

·11 months agoIf any of the items are vintage clothing that have a CA or RN number on the tag, you can often find the address by searching the CA/RN number on the Competition Bureau (Canada) or FTC (USA) RN databases - it will come up, even if the company is out of business. This will only work for "newer" vintage clothes that have those numbers on the tags.
I'm in the same predicament as you - many vintage items don't have a brand name (for example, vintage brass figurine). So far I haven't had it come up, but if a US buyer purchases an item like that, I may just cancel the order anyway due to the tariff fees + trouble with finding manufacturer details.

·11 months agoBest be aware that UPS has its own problems/issues with shipments right now(both domestically and Internationally), especially now with the CP Strike...
