CUSMA compliant goods + tariffs ?
Summary: rdemaree inquires about potential tariffs for CUSMA/USMCA-compliant goods going into the USA from Canada after the de minimis ends on August 29th. mrdutch1001 and shallow_karl express that compliance doesn't guarantee absence of tariffs and customs treatment may vary. sapphyres-designer-jewellery shares a forthcoming announcement from Stallion Express regarding CUSMA, while ae_purveyors criticizes Stallion for lacking timely updates compared to Chit Chats, which plans a webinar. Concerns are raised about refunds of shipping credits at these companies. musicyouneed and other participants discuss shipping experiences, potential tariff changes, and the complexity of certifying origin for goods like CDs, with some still seeing no tariffs imposed. The uncertainty surrounding the tariff situation is evident.
I am curious about what the tariff situation will be for CUSMA/ USMCA compliant good going INTO the USA from Canada once the trump executive order to end de minimis kicks in on August 29th?
The majority of my shop is full of handmade in Canada goods. All are below the current de minimis threshold of $800 and my avg customer usually spends around $50-60 USD equivalent per order.
I understand de-minimis is going away and that my goods are CUSMA/ USMCA compliant but does this mean none of my items will require an import fee going into the USA?
As I understand it Canada levies tariffs on CUSMA/ USMCA compliant goods above a $150 threshold.
Is anything of any $ worth protected going into the USA as long as it is CUSMA/ USMCA compliant? or is there some sort of threshold?
Any help would be appreciated.
(I already understand that the border agents will be apllying more scrutiny to future packages. I will be printing and affixing an ebay invoice with QR code to my shop as well as the cost of the exact item/ my name and address etc. and will be affixing made in Canada stickers on my products in case they open the packages and of course also supplying the proper COO and tariff code number. )

·1 year agoI STILL have not had a single Customer charged a a tariff/duty for anything shipped via the POST OFFICE to the USA. Properly declared COO China items have sailed through as normal; NONE have been delayed or charged anything.
Anyone else?

·1 year agoThank you so much for answering. I really appreciate the answer.
I think that I will continue to sell my CD's shipped through the PO. The moment that you encounter any problems can you let me know as then I may have to reconsider. I am hoping the fact that the CD was made in Canada, they will consider CUSMA compliant.

·1 year agoThis question is likely referencing the upcoming change where on August 29th the de minimis will be removed. Your buyers wouldn't have been charged tariffs for anything below $800 that was not made in China, but on paper that should change after August 29th.
In the context of these upcoming changes, the OP is asking about CUSMA (Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement).
There is a lot that isn't known about how this will all work, and people are very much learning on the fly.

·1 year agoI go to the PO and they have never asked me CoO so it goes without it. Nothing has been stopped or delayed. It all goes through smoothly. Also all my packages are hand written so there are no labels or invoices attached.

·1 year agoI send a lot of my packages as Letters* and using stamps, but Tracked Packet is cheap enough to make the extra few dollars well worth while.
And the Tracked Packet label I print out at home has a place for the HS code and Country of Origin. I'm not sure if it would print without it .
*Which technically is not allowed.

·1 year agoYou're probably buying the Tracked Packet label through eBay directly to get the discount. eBay requires you to fill in a CoO and HS code. If you buy the label directly through Canada Post (counter or SnapShip) these are not required fields, and the label just shows them as blank when printed out.

·1 year agoI have been really confused as to whether CD's made entirely in Canada, definately says that on the CD and artwork would be CUSMA compliant. How would I provide certification, would the fact that it says that on the CD and artwork be enough?

·1 year agoI have $40 in my Chit Chats account, but it's such a hassle to get there. Maybe I'll use it next time I have a large Canadian parcel or two and I'm going to be in that area. I guess if they go under, they can consider my $40 a tip or something...
eBay's Tracked Packet discounts killed most use for me to use Chit Chats. Chit Chats is sometimes a good option for USPS Signature confirmation if you don't want to use UPS since Canada Post only offers it with Xpresspost.

·1 year agoWho can actually answer these questions today. My guess is nobody. I'm confident the only people happy right now are the lawyers who specialize international trade law trying to figure out the ramifications and billing a healthy amount to do so. This is a real dog's breakfast.

·1 year agoI've been told Stallion Express will have an announcement next week about DDP (and supposedly CUSMA stuff as well). I don't know what the announcement is yet, just when I asked how to prove goods are CUSMA for shipping I was told to wait until an official announcement next week.

·1 year agoNice to hear a statement is finally coming from Stallion on the end of de Minimis. Ridiculous that we have to wait another week to hear it. But I just hope they have concrete answers regarding de Minimis and CUSMA goods. Stallion hasn’t even posted that de Minimis will be removed at the end of the month. It’s like they’re living under a rock over there.
Chit Chats has been on the ball from the moment tariffs were announced in January. Every time there’s been an update, no matter how minor, Chit Chats is quick to communicate with us.
Chit Chats is live-streaming a webinar on the changes tomorrow, August 8 at 3 PM EST.
Just night and day when it comes to support and customer service. It’s like they’re still trying to figure out what day it is at Stallion.
Also, if you’re still using Stallion and Chit Chats for shipping, you might want to use up as many of your credits and not top up. They’re non refundable, and you know they’re not giving squat back in the event any of them go under.

·1 year agoMy local branch agent did not know about the de minimis ending when I was there (the day after it happened). She checked into it and told me a day or so ago that Stallion is working on implementing something but it's not finished yet.
I emailed their help email to ask questions about CUSMA and the response I got back was to stay tuned for an official announcement next week.
For credits, I believe I have 3.75 left at Chit Chats (which I'm not worried about, I used as much as I could before Chit Chats left my city), and with Stallion I have a few packages to send, so I'm adding 25.00 at a time and using them. I'm aware we won't get the credits back, so I'm not wanting to leave many of them on the books. Generally I purchased 100 at a time which generally lasts about 4-5 days.

·1 year agoWay back when all this mess started I was able to get my credit back from Chit Chats. I'm not sure what their policy is now.

·1 year agoIMHO, there will be no assurances that our made in Canada goods will be properly handled and/or accurately assessed for any applicable tariffs, regardless of whether or not the packages are fully compliant with all the necessary documentation of the contents.

·1 year agoThe truth is, when it comes to where a good is made, you have no guarantees about tariffs. If some custom's goof wants to make an issue out of it, you can find yourself trying to get a certificate of origin and other things just to prove an item was made where it was said it was. A label on the item stating it was made in --- means nothing. However, for items under a high dollar amount, they're likely to just let it through if you provide the HS code on the shipping doc, unless you are shipping hundreds at a time.
