Item being returned to Canada after buyer paid for import duties
Hi folks, I sold a high value item to UK back in September. When the item arrived in UK, buyer refused to pay for import duties which resulted in the item being on hold. They eventually made the payment but for some reason the package was rerouted back to Canada (Royal mail: Retention exceeded - Returned to Sender) Now the buyer opened a case for refund. What should I do?

This is my take on the situation: If the item was on hold while awaiting payment/pickup, like Canada Post, I suspect Royal Mail only holds for a specific amount of time before the item becomes a "return to sender" and I suspect even though the buyer may have "eventually made the payment", that it was too late and the package had already been processed for "return to sender"....
Now you await the return of the package and upon receiving said package and examination that all is in order; THEN you refund the buyer whatever amount is necessary...
No matter who or what is to blame for the situation, that is a something sellers must be aware of and deal with whenever shipping anything outside of Canada.... and now you know why many sellers no longer ship to the UK or other European countries where this very same scenario can and does happen.

Add that you will refund when the package gets back to you.
Cross all your fingers and toes.

OP10 months agoThank you! I am very frustrated bc it is not my fault that it is being returned and now I will have to deal with import fees from UK to Canada
marnotom!
·10 months agoIf the item is being “returned to sender” it should be obvious to Canada Border Services that taxes and duties wouldn’t apply to it.
On another note, items refused due to the buyer’s refusal to pay customs charges are supposed to be ineligible for coverage under the eBay Money Back Guarantee, but I can’t find a page on the eBay UK site with this information.
