Shipping charges when buying a label on Ebay (sports cards)
Summary: arkadya asks about handling shipping charges on eBay when selling cards, as they are currently ending up paying more than they charge customers due to fees and shipping costs. flipistics suggests using calculated shipping to add a handling fee that the buyer does not see, or using a flat rate shipping that includes added costs for additional items. femmefan1946 offers an alternative approach of using Free Shipping for small, valuable items without tracking, noting the risk of not having tracking if a claim arises. They advise against free shipping for international sales and bulky items.
Hello
question from a newbie in selling cards:
On my listings when I choose 'buy labels on Ebay' for shipping, it gives the exact price that my customer will pay for the shipping, for example 9.00$ Is there a way (besides adding a few dollars to the price of my item) to add a fee on this amount to avoid paying more in shipping than I charge the customer?
Because the customer pays 9.00$ in shipping fees, but EBay charges me 9.00$ but takes a 13.5% fees on this charge (1.20$), when I add the price of sleeve, top loader, cardboard, bubble enveloppe, it comes easily to 1.75 - 2.00$ for shipping. So all in all, my customer pays 9.00$ for shipping but I am actually paying 11.00$ to ship the item. Not that I want to 'make money' on shipping but at least not wanting to lose any.
Just wanted to know if there was a way (beside boosting my item price of about 2$) to avoid this?
Thanks 🙂
Sorry I am pretty new in selling via Ebay.

·1 year agoDepending on the value of the purchase you could reduce your costs by going commando.
Use Free Shipping, and then ship by lettermail without tracking.
Technically, this is only legal in Canada.
Most people are honest. You just have to decide where you emotionally need to use tracking.
EBay does NOT require you to track. But if a customer opens an Item Not Recieved (INR) claim, you WILL be refunding.
Can you handle that?
Of the 15 packets on my front table for shipping tomorrow only three use labels with tracking. I foresee no problems with that.
Don't use Free Shipping for overseas sales.
Don't use Free Shipping for bulky items, domestic or international.

·1 year agoIf you're using calculated shipping you can add a handling fee. The buyer only sees the total shipping, not the breakdown.
If you're using flat rate shipping, you can add it into the flat rate cost. With flat rate you can also set it to add a little bit for each additional item if you want (in business policies), which would cover things like the sleeve and toploader but not the other supplies which would already have been covered by the first card.
