Various participants, including musicyouneed, mrdutch1001, and others, have contributed to the thread without providing substantive discussion on sales or related topics.
Since Aug 29, have you sold anything? I was on time away for a few days but back on now for a couple of days and nothing, no Canadian or US sales.
How about you?

·9 months ago3 USA sales for me in 52 days. Thats pretty close to zero. Thats bad. I didn't even think it was that much. I really don't care. Too bad, eBay provides a lot of eye-balls.
Still waiting for Canada Post to show up for USA shipping? I have been making regular USA sales from my Shopify site and I ship using DYKPost. If you don't know, they deliver to border and USPS delivers. You need to use Shippo to buy USPS shipping labels. Works great. I wish I could get some referral fee because it is a great service. Same for Shopify.

·9 months agosorry, but no matter how many "referrals" sellers throw around, NONE will ever convince me to resume shipping to the USA....

·9 months agoA reminder that you can buy Canada Post labels on the Canada Post /SnapShip site, and use your Solutions for Small Business account for a small discount.
It's not as good a discount as eBay in many cases and the system is clunky, but it can be done.

·10 months agoNope. I put alll my listings on holiday, and I suspect I will just remove them. Pretty much all of my buyers are US buyers, and the duties and tarrifs on made in China stuff is shutting me down. Really to bad as I have been a something fun to do seller for over 20 years. Dang.

·10 months agoThe majority of my sales (about 2/3) are in Canada. Canadian sales are holding steady, or even up a bit. More than one buyer has said that they are specifically looking for Canadian vendors.
I've sold several items to the US since August 29, which I've had to cancel. In each case, I explained to the buyer that the cancellation was the result of the chaos in international shipping due to the new tariff policies, and that I would let them know once the promised revisions to the eBay billing and shipping systems were online. All were understanding, and most said that they were still intereted in the items anyway.
So we'll see what happens once the new eBay system including the tariffs in the invoice comes online.
sapphyres-designer-jewellery
·10 months agoYou can lose your account over cancelling sales. Why not block the US from the beginning? Then you wouldn't have disappoinated buyers.
C.
sffan2001
·9 months agoActually, you are wrong. eBay has allowed cancellation of US sales over tariff issues. Canada Post strike aside, that is why eBay has disabled Canada Post mailings on its shipping service. Canada Post mailing labels will be reinstated once the new eBay international shipping system comes online.
Besides, I am not going to put a systemic block on US sales only to have to change it back once eBay's new system comes in.
I recently made a sale to the US of an item shipped by FedEx. The buyer knows they will have to pay the tariffs to FedEx upon delivery, and have agreed. I also have eBay's written assurance that if FedEx pulls a fast one and tries to bill me personally for the tariffs, I will have eBay's support.
john_koenig99
·9 months agoI would take the so-called "assurance" from eBay with a mountain of salt. There are several examples in the forum about sellers who have gotten charges from FedEx and UPS, when their buyers in the US refused delivery of the orders due to tariffs.
morepleaseshop
·10 months agoI thought ebay will strike you with defects for that.... If they don't, what reason do you use for cancellations?
As for my sales, I didn't do anything at first and saw the reduction in US sales and a slight uptick in Canadian sales since. Then I had 3 US buyers refusing to pay tariffs/duties and finally blocked the US sales. Since then (more than a week ago) I didn't have a single sale to US or Canada. Someone mentioned recently on here that if you block the US sales the algorithm will hide you from Canadians shopping on .com as well. That seems to be very true for me. At least I don't see why else my Canadian sales have tanked at the same time...

I'm betting Canadian sellers who have had to revise their handling time are being penalized big time when it comes to a steady stream of eyes on listings due to the ongoing strike. And the other penalty if they have stopped US shipping. Maybe even a 3rd for listing on dot ca?
sffan2001
·9 months agoAddendum:
Although I can't ship to the US using Canada Post until eBay updates its shipping and mailing label system to account for tariffs, I shipped my first (heavy) item to the US using UPS, which bills the buyer directly for tariffs
The buyer wanted the item, even with tariffs. They were kind enough to share their tariff bill with me: About $25.00 USD, on a sale of about $150 CDN. The interesting thing was the itemized tariff bill said little about tariffs: it was mostly the UPS brokerage fee, and something called a "US Government Disbursement Fee, whatever that means.
reallynicestamps
·9 months ago@sffan2001 Could you break down the $25 further?
How much was the (flat?) UPS fee?
It might help work out what percentage you were charged as the Trump Tariff.

·10 months agoI with a touch of sadness officially deleted all my listings and shut my store down today after 8 years. It cost me one month of premium subscription ($60) to do it but I'm cutting my losses. It was definitely mixed emotions but I believe for me it's time. I'm certainly not deleting my account as I probably will try to sell again sometime in the future but it's not a good environment currently. Lets see what the next round of CUSMA talks will bring. I'm not confident but I'm hoping for the best.
sapphyres-designer-jewellery
·10 months agoI've been trimming my store... I have stuff I can liquidate (to cut my losses and get something for it), and other stuff that's not profitable or has too high tariffs to return to the brick and mortar store.
You know I'm very angry, I've been especially angry with the strike because I feel small businesses are being held hostage by CUPW. I was angry about the tariffs but trying to find a way to adapt because it's the new normal, but there's nothing normal about Canada Post being on strike and I don't want to have to adapt to that.

·10 months agoI turned off US shipping shortly after the announcement and impressions/views TANKED.
I am going to turn off promoted listings as they are now offering so few impressions its not worth the extra cost and will be lowering prices to cost to try and start clearing it out. It's just not possible to run a small business selling online anymore so clear out and shut down.
femmefan1946
·10 months agoI am going to turn off promoted listings as they are now offering so few impressions its not worth the extra cost and
Just wondering. Since you don't pay anything for Promoted Listings until they sell, why bother to turn them off?
No sale-> no cost.
I have found my PL sales are lower than my non-PL sales, but my Views on PL are higher. I believe PL is advertising only, bringing eyeballs to my Store, and then browsers find something else to buy.
sapphyres-designer-jewellery
·10 months agoI've got old stock with PL, but have not been putting PL on new stuff. I figure if some stuff is being promoted it will help get views in my store, and maybe they buy something they see in the store that's not PL.
One thing about having lots and lots of listings (1000 on this account, although on time away, 9000 on the other account), is if you can get someone in the store they might look at lots of different things.
One thing I do not like when I see a listing that interests me, is going to check out the sellers store and seeing not much for sale in it. It's kind of disappointing because if I'm interested in one item, perhaps they have more and I can combine shipping. I'm not one to buy a one off thing if it's for my collections, so I'm much less likely to buy if I only find one thing that interests me. Most people I buy from regularly have stores for me to browse and lots to choose from.

·10 months ago@sapphyres-designer-jewellery
I believe in the past many prospective buyers would search a store in detail. Now with promoted listings being attached to your listings it risks them going elsewhere if they see something either at a lower price compared to yours or something else that peeks their interest. Not 100 % but it happens. Sadly many buyers now have VERY limited attention spans.
sapphyres-designer-jewellery
·10 months agoI have lots of things that are not in very big quantity, it's not like I'm selling something where there's 100-200 copies of it available on eBay and lots of competition. I make up my own stamp collections, sure other people have stamp collections for sale, and maybe a buyer will look at several before picking which one, but I feel fairly confident my items will still sell even if other PLs are appearing in my listing.
If I'm looking at a listing and seeing PLs and navigating through them, I'm usually just browsing anyway and want to look at lots of stuff, but not so likely I'll buy anything unless I see what I think is a good deal.

·9 months agoSorry only just saw your message.
I am turning them off because as I said the cost benefit isn't there and without the extra 5% fee, I can reduce my prices by 5% as I clear out my inventory.
I have already made my decision to close up shop due to Canada Post, USA Tarrifs, and my main supplier banning eBay sales (all online marketplaces) on all new inventory purchases... So I'm working through and reducing prices to my cost and if I can reduce my cost by another 5% then that increases the chance of a sale in my mind.

·10 months agoNearly had one $750 sale the first week back but from the sounds of conversations with the potential buyer they were spooked by eBays little banner message, even after assuring them such a thing would not occur and that their made in the US antique was duty, tariff, and brokerage free.
We're slowly putting back all non duty/tariff items on .com and everything else on .ca with a message we ship worldwide. Here's to the supreme court finding such tariff's are illegal and some of this can sort itself back on track.
morepleaseshop
·10 months agoIs there a fast way to find out if the item will have no duty/tariff? A master list somewhere?
Buyers are asking and I've spent hours on researching my US, European and Canadian made items in several categories and still can't find definitive answers, there are always some kinds of "buts".
sapphyres-designer-jewellery
·10 months agoIf you sign up to use Stallion Express, they have a duty calculator on the dashboard. You put in the HTS code, it will tell you what the code is for (so you can be sure you put the code in correctly), then you put how much the item is worth (it only takes it in CAD for right now), and you put what country it's made, and it will tell you the tariff rate and how much the tariffs are.
I realize using Stallion might not be practical, but if you get signed up for it you can use the duty calculator.

18 sales since, note that 66% are to repeat customers.
5 to the USA interestingly enough mostly NOT repeat customers.
1 to GB, rest to Canada.
Interestingly only 1 promoted sale so far (the one to UK) out of them all. My promoted rate is "small" compared to the new jumbo suggestion, about 20% of it, however in May with the same % promoted rate, the promoted sell rate was much higher (about 40% of my items are promoted).

Views are taking a hit. Impressions seems relatively the same. This is caused by the change I made for the USA and using UPS United States exclusively at the moment.

For anyone else that has turned off US shipping and lists on dot ca only, have you seen a similar drop in traffic?
For anyone else that is still is still selling to the USA on ca the other contributing factor is MOST LIKELY to drop in sales is that inaccurate warning message causing sellers grief and scaring potenial buyers away.

·10 months agoThe explanation for those graphs is that if you don't sell to the USA, your items are soft-hidden on .com. What I mean by this is that while your items show up in the search, they show up at the absolute bottom of the search. Nobody is going to find them or click on them when they search for something.
In addition, there is another flaw where if a Canadian user visits a Canadian store on .com, and that Canadian store does not ship to the USA, the Canadian user with a Canadian address will see a message that says this store does not have any items that ship to your address.
For example, I have US shipping enabled for DVDs and CDs because they are duty free. I do not have it for hockey jerseys. If a Canadian buyer clicks on my eBay store from .com and clicks on the hockey jersey banner, they will get a message that says I am sold out in that category, even if I have inventory listed.
This all boils down to a major flaw in how eBay is set up to where part of the Canadian userbase is on .com because you can still purchase from .com. I know this will be unpopular because there are some people who have selling accounts on .com, but they should route all Canadian traffic that goes to .com over to .ca. As in, if you type eBay.com from a Canadian IP it re-routes you to .ca. Include a special button or unique URL that Canadian .com sellers can use to avoid being re-routed.
The short of it is that if you don't have a US shipping option enabled, your items are for all intents and purposes invisible to any Canadian who shops through .com.
lotzofuniquegoodies
·10 months ago@ilikehockeyjerseys
Your explanation pretty much sums up my thoughts as to how it is working. Without having US shipping due to basically limited options (not willing to pay a US buyers tariffs) for most Canadian sellers we are between a rock and a hard place. eBay has done so much tinkering with have views/traffic work it's become very difficult to make the info as valuable as it once was. As far as I know the traffic report was combined. Now you have the option of choosing Canada/USA or UK which leaves out rest of the world and/or no way to combine those 3. It does appear to be hiding us from the rest of the world as an added downgrade. Unless you are willing to list on additional sites.
ilikehockeyjerseys
·10 months agoWhat it comes down to is that any Canadian who browses using .com won't see items from Canadian stores that don't ship to the USA.
This is in practical terms. They technically could find your items, but they won't because the default search is by best match and Canadians who do not ship to the USA get penalized in the algorithm on .com, even if .com is being viewed by a Canadian address.
femmefan1946
·10 months agoYou have the results right, but I think you are wrong in calling the policy a flaw.
if you don't sell to the USA, your items are soft-hidden on .com.
It would be annoying for a buyer to find The Thing and only when they try to buy learn that the seller does not ship to their country.
And the seller who is uninterested in shipping to that country is not annoyed by Messages from unwanted customers.
Not, as the kids say, a bug but a feature.
there are some people who have selling accounts on .com, but they should route all Canadian traffic that goes to .com over to .ca.
Very few since the end of allowing dotCA accounts to advertise in USD. Those would be grandfathered accounts. Since 2016 all new dotCA accounts are in loonies.
In that sentence does "they" refer to the seller or to eBay?

·10 months agoDot ca traffic display for Canada 1 month after removing US shipping
Same display on dot com for Canada
Traffic is down 850 views in 1 month without US shipping. Notice the difference between the identical reports. Bar heights are now higher on ca version with same breaks. Listing view totals do not match. More under the hood tinkering in dark of night. See post 25 for a bit more context. Very likely, going forward to take any eBay generated data with a grain of salt for accuracy. ESPECIALLY on dot ca.

I shut down shipping to U.S. so taking a hit there, however I've recently added about 10 European countries to ship to for some of my listings, no sales there yet however it has only been a day. The majority of my media items (CD's, vinyl, Cassettes, DVD's) do not have a country of manufacture populated, I'm starting to rectify that now but wondering if it's worth the effort as I anticipate it will take me around 80 hours to input.
movie_galaxy
·11 months agoIf you mean populate on the Ebay website, you can do it in one lump effort by selecting all your listings and going to Edit, Edit all Selected, Shipping, Shipping Policy etc. I can't remember the exact steps but they are the same when you want to adjust all your prices at one time or make some other mass adjustment to your listings.
shoppergurl08
·11 months agoYes that would be through the bulk edit tool, unfortunately it's cumbersome when you have more than one country of manufacture to enter. I went through one box yesterday of around 120 CD's and had around 15 different countries of manufacture. One potential time saver is to bulk edit 6K CD listings all to Canada as the manufacture (as I'd say over 50% were manufactured in Canada) and then go one by one through each CD to indivdually edit the ones that are non-Canadian. It's still a daunting task as every single CD needs to be looked at, it's great for my eyesite as many require the use of a magnifying glass to read the small print.

·10 months agoI've had a few US sales, but lost a lot of them for three reasons...
1. My item location is now Canada (it was USA before Aug 29 since I was able to ship with USPS and the de minimis)
2. My shipping prices to the US have doubled.
3. eBay is telling US buyers they will have to pay tariffs.

·11 months agoI came in here a minute ago to start a similar thread... I've been back online for a little over 24 hours now and had some sales. (I was away, then sick with the flu or some other such thing, so I only turned my stores on yesterday).
On the Canada store (this one), I sold one banknote to a buyer in Ottawa, and one token to a buyer in Quebec. USA sales are mostly blocked in this store though, so that might not be a fair representation (but USA sales are not blocked on some specific things that I don't feel I'll have problems shipping to the US).
On my US store, I sold a token to a customer in the US (he contacted me before Aug 29 so we had a conversation about tariffs and how I ship with Stallion and all that, which reassured him to purchase when the store reopened).
Also sold a token to a buyer in Malaysia, a $3 banknote to a buyer in the US, and a stamped cover to a buyer in the US. The stamped cover buyer contacted me in advance to make an offer where I responded how I ship (no tariffs for the buyer).
Since it seems like sellers have the choice to do DDP with Canada Post (or Stallion/Chit Chats) or DDU with UPS/FedEx I wanted to assure my buyers about shipping with Stallion and that takes care of the tariffs. I raised my shipping prices in the US store to deal with small amounts of tariffs on low value things (so the buyer pays as part of their shipping if in the US, not affecting the price for non-US buyers), and I removed anything with high rates where there would be no profits.
I have some 1200 items to go through my unsolds and figure out what to do (the postcards will be lotted up and sold in groups in the brick and mortar store, the tokens will be rephotographed and listed on this store on eBay.ca, and other items will be returned to the brick and mortar store for them to decide what to do with).

·11 months agoHow are you handling the certificate of origin for all these used goods?
I tried doing some test shipping labels with chitchats, but havent had any luck getting it to be error free.

·11 months agoIt will be next to impossible to sell used goods and send them into the USA with the new tariffs restrictions. The courier companies want sellers to upload spreadsheet information with numerous particulars, outlining UPC codes, country of origin etc. and for the used market with 1 of 1 goods, it just won't be feasible.

·11 months agoMy items have tariffs, I tell Stallion the manufacturer and create an SKU and use that to create the shipment.

·11 months agoDefinite dive in sales, no question. Might be an idea to put in the title ("Duty paid by seller for Postal shipments") but I'd be careful with that when it comes to how much duty is being assessed when the item is out of your hands. As for other sites, there are sites in Canada dedicated to sales of specific kinds of items, as well as Facebook Marketplace which is probably the biggest sales site in the U.S. now.

·11 months agoI've thought of updating verbage, but updating listings is a pain in the rear every time it gets done. I've had to update many times for changes that were made (like when my listings said Paypal and then MP came about and I had to remove the Paypal line), then I had statements in my listing that I would ship with USPS, then when I started shipping some stuff with Canada Post I had to remove that verbage. It only takes 3 days of the software updating the listings in the background, but it's still a royal pain. I can force it to update quicker by syncing listings, but it takes lots of time.

·10 months agoI would just like to stress, charges must be understood by Americans.
1. Taxes. You have to pay them and have for about five years online now.
2. Brokerage: ANY time you order an item, cross-border, using UPS or Fedex BASE ground shipping, you pay brokerage and it has nothing to do with duty. It is a fixed ($15-$60 or so) charge on any shipment. Want to avoid it? Get the item shipped UPS or Fedex higher level shipping by AIR. No brokerage.
3. Duties. These have recently been added but what I've found using Zonos and CanPost/USPS is that items MADE in the U.S. being shipped back there do not incur any duties. Duties themselves vary country to country. BUT, not everything is dutied. Aluminum, steel 35% or so. Most other things? 10-15%.
