Anyone ever heard of anything like this? I got billed today (end of month invoice) $3800 for a $60 return shipping label on Shippo.
Try not to make this too long but it involves a repeat buyer who purchased twice from me, back in September and again early April both times wasn't satisfied demanded a return.
Normaly I block a buyer after even their first return but he slipped through and bought again in April. Here is the thing the first time I provided him with a return shipping label he returned it that was that. This most recent return same thing provided him with a return label (he's in the U.S.) He ignored it and was somehow able to reuse the first label again from back in September and get the weight changed from 7 lbs to 1437 lbs resulting in a $3800 charge.
I called Fedex they agreed the wrong weight was entered but need Shippo to recover the funds on my behalf so could take a couple weeks. Just left me thinking what is going on here lol. Just some guy disgruntled with the original return messing with me? Unless I am missing something I don't see how he can profit from this. By far weirdest sale so far.

OP2 months agoJust a follow up. To Shippo's credit they have reversed the $8000 in charges after intially blown me off when first contacted. Their customer service is extremely difficult to get ahold of basically via email days to respond. I really had to pressure them to get someone to eventually phone me.
I believe threatening them with a chargeback was what got them to issue a refund. Would not wish the experience on anyone. Many hours wasted but this info might be useful for anyone unlucky enough to be faced with the same situation.

FedEx is the absolute worst (UPS only somewhat better), there are posts almost every day on the US boards over this exact situation.
Using either company if you are purchasing labels from a third-party (eBay, Shippo etc.) is high risk because Fedex just send you back to the label providor who will tell you it's not their problem.
Persistance and eventually threats seem to be the only way to get a satisfactory resolution unless you are actually using your own FedEx/UPS accounts.
I suggest in future if you have a US return is to have it sent to a forwarder near the Canadian border and have them bring it across the border and ship it to you in Edmonton. I have used https://crossborderpickups.ca/ in the past.

OP3 months agoI'm amazed Fedex or shippo are actually fighting me on this. Even if the box were filled with solid gold it would not be that heavy. A 1,437 lb shipment would be billed as freight, not a standard package with a porch delivery photo.

Why It's Impossible
Your box is roughly 35" × 7" × 8" = ~1.13 cubic feet.
At 1,437 lbs, that would require a material density of ~1,267 lbs per cubic foot — denser than solid gold or lead. Even solid steel is only ~490 lbs/ft³.

·3 months ago@barnfindparts If you search through these forums you'll find other similar horror stories, mostly with Fedex. There's a reason many of us refuse to use them. I hope you're able to get it resolved.

·3 months agoThe buyer just packs it up and puts a label on it. If the weight is changed, that's someone at Fedex making a typo, or measuring a package that was next to it, or something like that (although it's hard to see how a package that weighs half a done would get mixed up with a 20 lb package).
I doubt the buyer did anything to cause this to happen, I don't see how. When I ship my boxes by FedEx I indicate the weight and size of the box, but FedEx verifies it and charges me more if the weight is off. Even if the buyer reused the first label he didn't put any dimensions or weight in when he shipped it, he just slapped the label on and sent the package back.
Hopefully you get this sorted out, I would be shaking and furious if this happened to me. I ship coins and stamps, so if it did happen, it would be a horridly big blunder. Worst I had was shipping a few banknotes and having Stallion say my package weighed 2 lbs and putting a $15 surcharge on it. I tried to dispute it, but they claim they weighed it and I didn't put the right weight in. It was 7 banknotes, I think my 8oz measurement was accurate or maybe a little generous.

·3 months agoIMO the buyer isn't getting anything financial back, it looks more to me like a "vengeance" scenario.
Don't know the specifics around what all happened communication wise, it it looks like buyer was very upset, or perhaps there's a wee chance they're confused and put in the gms instead of KGs (although I suppose it would be OZ vs pounds which wouldn't be as great a difference as was experienced here).
Its too bad the blocking got missed, hopefully the refund process for the extreme fees goes smoothly!!!

OP3 months agoFair warning when using Shippo. At first I thought this was a case of a vengeful buyer but appears something is compromised with the Shippo account. Before the card was cancelled they managed to get over $8000 charged to a routine $70 shipment.
Wasted hours trying to get ahold of their customer service which is absolutely among the worst I've ever seen.

OP3 months agoHere's the $8000 shipment in question weighing 1437lbs according to Fedex. Its actually 20lbs but Fedex "recalculated" and Shippo didn't bother to question it and stiffed me with the bill. I'm telling you Fedex must have some super human delivery drivers to carry and lift 1437 lbs and prop it up like that.

·3 months agoIf there was a descrepancy that large it should have been caught at some point along the way in any number of audits that are done. Everything of "normal" size goes by way of conveyor and lazer scanning.
Because the amount is so large it would be worthwhile to take package to a either fedex store or town depot for an in person audit and delivery photo for addtional proof.

We have not evolved to deal with what we experience today (like the net and naval blockades, even though we hope and try to advance that way), the internet is beyond the obsolete hunter-gatherers we still are.
