Trump ending trade talks with Canada
U.S. President Donald Trump announced he is breaking off trade talks with Canada after learning the Canadian Government is going through with a Digital Services Tax that will apply to American businesses.
We'll know in about a week what percentage of tariffs will be applied.
Batten down the hatches everyone, we're in for rough seas.

·1 year agoBack to the subject at hand, talks have resumed as the DST has been effectively K-O'ed. Of course, the White House is trump-eting this as a big win and that Canada caved, but that seems to be a short-term view. The long-term view is that Canada is working with other countries on an international version of this, so this move might be viewed as a pawn sacrifice in a big chess game.

·1 year agoThe USA used to be about 90% of my sales, with Canada and overseas splitting the rest.
Since COVID that had dropped to 85%, but overseas is up.
Since Trump Tax that had dropped to 80%.
I usually do monthly totals, since anything less is too small a window.
Today my Friday dropoff was two Canada, one Australia, two USA. But that's just one day.

·1 year agoyou'll note that Trump gave a 7 day window for these new threatened tariffs to be announced. If he was as furious as he acted during the announcement, why wait? He'd just announce 100% tariffs on Canada right away. His mock outrage was just another bully-boy negotiating tactic.
The SCOTUS rulings are a bigger deal. We are watching in real time the US becoming an authoritarian regime. Those who think Trump will be around for just another 3.5 years are dreaming. He'll be around, as President, until he dies. Free and fair elections in the US will be a thing of the past by the time the midterms come around. Trump owns the FBI, CIA, the Justice Dept, all administrative branches of the Federal Gov't and the Supreme court. Soon he'll own the US military. Who's to stop him?

·1 year agoWe will !!
With our new F-35 jets, although they tend to fall out of the sky every now and then, their combat computers are controlled by Americans, and they just getting too expensive.
Sheesh, now I don't know who will stop him 😫
Just glad I'm old enough that I probably won't be around when he pushes that red button ...

·1 year agoThe somewhat ironic thing is he continually critiques anyone else that disagrees with his way of thinking. (Biden etc.) Pot calling kettle black much? Probably from living in a glass house soo long!!!

·1 year agoI'm done worrying about it. I've spent far too long trying to figure out how to deal with all of this and not enough on actually running a business. This is going to continue for the next 3.5 years regardless of whether there's a deal or not. Trump will come up with some BS excuse to threaten us whenever he needs to distract people from something else he's done / trying to do.
Now the Canada Post dispute, that IS a problem that needs to be resolved sooner as opposed to later and that's within our nation's control.

·1 year agoI hear you, I have given up on keeping up with what Trump is doing, or going to be doing...
I would like to open my US store to Canada sales again, but I'm afraid if there's a strike it will be a big effort to update 11,000 listings. Even in SixBit with it doing it automatically, I can change the shipping presets in 5 minutes, but it takes days to sync with eBay. I changed it all in anticipation of a strike, I don't want to change it all back until the danger has passed.
On this account I will simply go on time away if there's a strike and stop all sales. Since I declare in my listings that items ship from Canada, one should be somewhat understanding if there's a strike. It's a bit different in my US store where some items say they ship from Canada, and others from NY.

·1 year agoIt doesn't matter. Business to the USA is nonexistent as has been for a while. The tariff threat has scared away a large swath of sales already. EBay is difficult to sell on right now and most of the issues have nothing to do with the company. Trump is so erratic it makes selling practically impossible. Thank goodness for my local marketplace, sales on there are through the roof.

·1 year agoAs is usually the case, Friday announcement..... the news folks will have a great time as usual with it over the weekend....

·1 year agoThe US news folks have other things to deal with over the weekend, specifically the SCOTUS rullings this morning and the ongoing Big Baffoon Bill.
ricarmic
·1 year ago@recped Yep I was really talking about the Canadian news folks, which is what I think he wants to happen: get folks in the negotiating country up in a flurry and it lasts the whole weekend or so... although doing it over and over lessens the impact significantly each time...
@easoss As I've mentioned in other threads I've been exploring more local selling options and yes mine are doing wonderfully at the moment as well, which is great by me!! (ebay store is on vacation till september but I'm still running some of the other venues over the summer)

OP1 year agoI wish I could explore more local means, but I'm a very private person. The last thing I need is someone showing up at my house for a pick-up. And with how much time I work (and caring for two elderly parents) outside of Ebay, selling online is more convenient for me.
I am exploring other online options.
ricarmic
·1 year ago@needsmorerobots yep I am the same, I don't do pick ups, it takes wayy too much time arranging, waiting for potential show up, etc etc.
I have seen folks selling the type of material you have in the "antique" or "collectible" markets/malls, that has different trials, tribulations and costs, but a lot of the work we have to do here to sell something is looked after by them... for a fee of course!

·1 year agoI don't do in person pick ups either. Not to sound like a party pooper for those who do things like FBM, if you get some kind of nut and they injure themselves on your property, your home insurance won't cover you unless you have business coverage (if they determine your selling is a business and not just a few personal items).
When I got my condo insurance set up I was given a business insurance exclusion on my policy that any business activites in my house or on my property are not covered (which would include item pick up).

In almost 20 years of selling on eBay I have probably done approx. 200 random "pick ups". Some have been home...others usually the neighbourhood post office outlet. Knock on wood no issues to date. As a side if they choose to pay Cash at Door, there are no taxes to worry about. (Disclaimer. As long as it isn't something with a nuisance recycling fee. eBay bills the seller. Up to seller to notice and collect. It is not specifically marked recycling fee. It's just called tax. For those po pick ups just a matter of setting up a convenient time and hoping marking pu clears it off the books for you in eBay's 2 to how many ever weeks it is. 😉

·1 year agohave been buying & selling since a youngster>have had businesses over the years, have done trade shows & craft shows, have sold various commodities from purebred horses to market garden produce to collectibles and antiques> all face to face transactions from the home property....Over the past 20+years have had a few eBay local pickups but previous to that> during the 1990s and early 2000s had countless pickups at the door for handmade products from our home businesses. More recently selling on FB Marketplace where business is done at the door.
Using common sense goes a long way.....
Yes, the world is full of crazies and we have some here in Canada too....
but TBH, I think most "nuts" live south of the Canadian border...

·1 year agoIt's OK ... we caved in again to Trumps rhetoric on this.
Isn't it wierd how one guy can say something stupid and the whole world goes wonky?
Does this remind you of any others in history who were able to do this?

·1 year agoI think the day will come when the US comes crawling back to the world, asking forgiveness. Trump has been in office less than six months and the US is about to enter a mild recession. Trump was handed a decent economy and in less than half a year has managed to trash it. And alienate all the friends and allies of the United States in the process.
Now that the Big Beautiful Bill has passed that is going to make things a lot worse in the US. Huge billionaire and corporate tax breaks , minor tax breaks for everyone else and nowhere near enough incoming revenue to pay for it all. US national debt will soar to new heights. And the whole world is p'd off at Trump (except for North Korea and maybe Russia). In time new trade partners will be developed, new supply chains set up and the US may find themselves on the outside looking in for decades to come.
