What needs to be fixed within eBay and more directly eBay Canada
Summary: The discussion centers on issues with eBay's shipping options and their impact on Canadian sellers. lotzofuniquegoodies and others express concerns about the limitations of the EIS (eBay International Shipping) and suggest implementing flexible shipping methods, allowing sellers to choose between EIS and other services like Canada Post. The inability to opt back into EIS and challenges with handling international orders are highlighted. Participants also mention misleading delivery estimates affecting buyer expectations and causing disputes. thebossorder shares experiences of losing sales due to the EIS program being advertised by default, which may not always show the most economical shipping option. Suggestions are made to address these concerns to improve seller and buyer experiences on eBay.
If you could have ebay address a longstanding concern of yours as a seller or buyer what would it be? Limit 1 per customer. Void where prohibited by law. Taxes, tariffs & handling charges will be extra. Extra costs for beyond locations.
I have 3 so leaving this blank. I just can't choose!! Maybe we will get a consensus? Who knows?

·1 hour agoid like ebay to stop advertising their EIS program by default on my listings to countries i already ship to directly. im getting at least 1 PM a day asking why shipping is so expensive and have to explain to them to simply change the shipping method at checkout, its supposed to help us sell more but im convinced ive been losing sales to buyers who just wont bother checking if i ship to them for cheaper
marnotom!
·1 hour agoThat's weird. I set my shipping location to a US ZIP code to look at your listings and found that the least expensive shipping method is given prominence on the listing page. What do you see when you try looking at your listings the way a prospective buyer would?

·1 hour agoon my side i also view my own shipping method first which is why im confused as to why so many people contact me on this issue. ive had one this morning telling me he's being quoted 30$ to australia while i ship directly for 19$. its also reflecting in my EIS sales as all of them are from place is ship to directly, to push this further ive NEVER , not even ONCE at a EIS order outside of countries i already ship to.

Since I was enrolled in eIS (approx 5 months ago) I've had a grand total of 1 item that went internationally where buyer paid for CP tracked. Everything else went to the hub. (Approx 12 orders). As far as it goes once you are enrolled in eIS if an item sells internationally the invoice buyer sees is the only invoice they will ever see. There is no way for seller to send a manual invoice unless they cancel item and relist. I personally would like to be able to access/view the invoice the buyer got but that is not going to happen. (Remember in the past we used to get an email for invoices sent to buyers. If you send one manually you can specify a copy...if you would like one. There is no way to override the invoice eBay sends to the buyer. As a side, is anyone aware of buyers being refunded by ebay if they were over charged on shipping? That's not likely ever happened.
And yest I have checked to see what my listings show. With bulk edit it is next to impossible to apply the correct shipping choices. As I have mentioned on several occasions, I and others would like the option to opt out of eis for shipping internationally (Non USA) orders. eBay has made that next to impossible for Canadian sellers and refuses to honestly address this as an issue.
eIS works in some situations for some sellers....But not all!!! (Mostly product mix factors and/or their location.)

·Aug 12, 2026 at 5:30 AMThe new overly ambitious delivery estimate shown to buyers for the economy and Canada Post lettermail shipping option leads to extremely early INR requests from buyers. It drives me up the wall.
When setting business policies, it shows economy shipping as 1-15 business days, yet estimated delivery still shows 2-4 days.
john_koenig99
·Aug 12, 2026 at 11:02 AMIMO, they want to force people to use more expensive, tracked (and theoretically faster) shipping services. Which is financially unfeasible for a lot of sellers, with listings of items with razor thin profit margins.

·4 months agoI am really beginning to hate EIS. Just had a customer from the US purchase an item from me but selected Standard International Shipping instead of the EIS.. Had to inform the customer I can't ship unless he selects EIS as I have no mechanism to do it otherwise. No doubt will lose a good sale and **bleep** of a customer. We are either in the EIS or we are not. Why is eBay allowing other shipping methods to appear on the listings. This is BS.
marnotom!
·4 months agoBecause some sellers want to offer their buyers a choice. For shipments of larger items to countries other than the US, eIS often occupies a middle ground between surface parcel and international express post.
eIS isn't all or nothing the way the old GSP was. If you don’t want US buyers selecting your flat rate shipping option, remove it from your shipping policies.
coolthings123
·4 months agoThat is all well and good. But it seems whenever I try to remove the other shipping methods and just leave the EIS it shows "I may not ship to the US" Very frustrating.

·4 months agoHi @coolthings123 I'm not sure if you're experiencing a gliche. I haven't had that happen yet using eBay's "Business Policies". Although EIS is activated without issues it's isn't working for me either. I haven't made one single EIS sale to the USA this year. Frankly it's ruining my established customer base showing ridiculous shipping costs and delivery times from BC to Ontario to a buyer. Here's an example of eBay messages I get. Needless to say I lost this $40 sale...
flipistics
·4 months agoYour shipping rates seem a little weird. It's showing as $18 for expedited lite to get to me. The eBay calculator says $13 (which still sucks). Unless you have a $5 handling fee or something, you may want to look into that.
intimewithmusic
·4 months agoUnder EIS does eBay even charge Americans a seller's handling charge if they have one? There seems to be no rhyme or reason in how eBay arrives at EIS rates they pass on to buyers. Please let us know if you know.
Thanks!
flipistics
·4 months agoUnless I'm misreading something, they seem to be referring to the total shipping cost they're shown. That includes the domestic leg, which you have control over, as well as the international leg, which you don't. If there's something funky with your domestic prices, your buyer is going to see a higher than expected shipping cost. I have no idea whether that's due to a handling fee added by you or a bug on eBay's end, just something I noticed. Either way, it's likely costing you sales.
marnotom!
·4 months agoIf that catalogue were travelling the opposite direction, you'd be looking at a US$26 counter rate charge if sent by USPS.
lotzofuniquegoodies
OP4 months ago@marnotom!
@intimewithmusic
What has made this all funky is if you look at shipping options for US sellers for shipping internationally eBay has made available a bare bones shipping discount with USPS to Canada making eIS the defacto shipping option for US sellers to Canada. They magically have awesome discounts for domestic shipping.
Canadian's on the other had have an awesome discount for USA tracked (54%), UPS 66% for US shipments. Except we are unable to use the CP rates because the Zonos shenanigans even though it has been letting buyers paid for that tracked option. (The main reason Zonos is in place is due to the volume of inbound shipments that now would need to be cleared by US customs. Exactly how Canadian customs processes our inbound shipments.) As for Canadian's shipping internationally again we have great rates for most countries (where applicable) by tracked except buyers are not seeing these options due to eIS shows up first and most likely works same way when buyer tries to pay. It's not like sellers get an instant heads up that an international so they give buyers choice and maybe a cheaper faster method for shipping. Even, from my understanding sellers get those same challenges when they try to use business policies.
US sellers have access to discounted rates outside of ebay. They just choose not to use them.
In checking out the US postage calculator tool it it is showing discounts of 2, 3,4,5 % for shipments to Canada (You need to enter Cdn postal code to view the discounts). Without the postal code it just states a generic disclaimer. eBay discount applied in green. The intl version ONLY provides USPS. The domestic version shows eBay/USPS/Fedex/UPS with applicable discount 13 to 73%. The eBay/USPS options mirror each other from quick testing.
https://www.ebay.com/shp/calc/rates
marnotom!
·4 months agoAre you sure about that? The listings I've seen lately have the seller's lowest shipping rate show up in search results and is the one that shows up on the listing page as the primary one.
Just a heads-up the rates that are currently showing up on the .com calculator are either out of date or they don't include the fuel surcharges recently levied by USPS. I stand by my earlier statement that the cheapest counter rate for sending merchandise to Canada by USPS would be US$26. Discounted 5% (which I think is a bit generous), eBay's rate would be US$24.70, still more than @intimewithmusic's eIS charge for sending something small and lightweight to the US.
lotzofuniquegoodies
OP4 months ago@flipistics if you are seeing excessive shipping for @coolthings123 they may not have discounted shipping turned on, highish handling or using flat rate ballparking. Flat rate shipping at best of times is hopeful optimism.
@intimewithmusic
@marnotom!
I have had 7 Intl sales to date with eis. To date no buyers have asked for a cheaper option prior to making payment. When eis is in place sellers can't even send a revised invoice of a buyer were to request one. A number of Canadian sellers are wanting a way to opt out of eis for Intl only. It is next to impossible to achieve. I only know because I have tried. Do all potential buyers check shipping options prior to making a payment or do they just go by what they see on the front screen. My bet is front screen. Could you imagine a buyer doing a search and then opening up each listing one at a time to see the shipping options? Not likely.
You would think that the rates in play with EBAY's calculator tools would line up with what gets shown to buyer with invoice and seller when they go to create a label. Having them miles apart would be like getting a store flyer with one price and then going to that same store and finding out it is a different price.

·4 months agoSo far no EIS sales this year. I put my niche on hold which, as you know includes very rare United States and Canada's music memorabilia. Now Im listing vintage pens and other collectibles that are in domestic niches. Soon coins and stamps. Not sure what else I can do.
Its so bad EBay is now taking my store subscription out of my bank account because theres nothing in Adyen.
I understand why others are exiting. Im not there yet but not waiting around either. Since 2013 I never felt the competing discrimination I feel now. Buyers want my products. Thats not the problem. The problem is eBay Canada is only viable domestically now. This is going to increase domestic competition creating a Catch 22.
Other platforms like Shopify are paying attention and cheaper as we watch sellers exit.
lotzofuniquegoodies
OP4 months agoAnd it's not like we haven't asked for actual breakdowns of postage/courier charges from day 1 of MP. CP, Shippo, Net Parcel can do it no problem. For some mysterious reason eBay refuses. Transparency used to be a thing!!!!
intimewithmusic
·4 months agoIm sorry, youve missed the point. I have to repeat this constantly.
How the "competition discrimination" @lotz is describing affects sellers depends TOTALLY on what they sell and who they sell to. It has nothing to do w USA rates to Canada. We MUST be able to sell into the US competing w USPS. It wasnt easy before but we managed. Now its impossible. Formerly I could send it to Orlando in 10 days for $15cad.
That catalog would never travel to Canada where there us almost zero market for memorabilia. Its a US niche only.

·4 months agoI have no way of backing this up, and I don't think you can back up your claim either, but my sense is that most Canadians who are purchasing from Amazon are taking sales away from brick and mortar retailers, and what's more, they're buying from Amazon itself, not Amazon sellers.
Amazon does "shiny and new and conventional" very well. eBay does "hard to find, unusual, possibly collectible" better than Amazon. After stumbling around a bit, I think eBay has realized it can't compete with Amazon on the same level as Amazon and is now moving in a different direction, which is why you're seeing it purchasing other online marketplaces and online sales faciliators related to fashion, collectibles, and automotive products.

·9 months agoSo many fixes are needed!
1st: No Sales fees on taxes and shipping! A reasonable processing fee is fine (say under 3.5%) but charging 15% on Shipping and taxes increases costs and therefore prices on eBay.
2nd: A more from this seller line instead of 'similar listings' - eBay far too often shows an American seller selling the same item for less on my listings because they haven't had to pay import taxes, duties, brokerage, and Shipping to Canada.
3rd: Realated to 2 - Deprioritise American items in the search listings. This is .ca which is supposed to be for CANADIANS. Show items in Canada before those in other countries.
4th: Roll Back Fee Increases. We have gotten nothing new for these increased fees and they have just increased prices on eBay compared to other sites. I can sell the same item on my own website for $30 less and make an extra $30 in margin because of the fees. My website is also cheaper than the lowest level of eBay stores to add insult to injury.

I and a few others when we opted out in Sept never got the option to opt back in. It's been messaged to eis and Luke responded with a follow question asking if I had the toggle. Passed on the no but no follow up from anyone at ebay. I check now daily.
According to as per CS once you opt out you need another invite to get back in. Then it is supposed to be in batches in 3 month intervals. I am guessing 22 years on eBay is basically meaningless. Would that be viewed by eBay as undercutting the EIS? Hope not as direct shipment to the US with CP/Zonos is still the lowest cost shipping option. Last announcement on this was 5 months ago and here is what they posted.
Over the last week, we’ve rolled out the ability to set specific prices for US buyers on new and existing listings. When paired with Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) shipping – which lets you to pre-pay tariffs – setting up US-specific pricing allows you to:
Account for tariff costs up front to avoid surprise costs and customer support issues upon delivery
Keep shipping costs as low as possible, which our data says can help improve sales
Keep your prices competitive globally by setting separate prices for sales outside the US
So not integrated yet. This sounds like keep on using the Zonos app or UPS or Fedex who has brokerage fees on top. They collect the tariffs when item arrives at the door. Too much can go wrong that way. If you know something different please let me know.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Absolutely NOT. ZONOS is the ZERO de minimis "enabler". ZONOS was the whole reason for Trump to force Canada Post to be 100% DDP in the first place to prevent US Customs from collecting tariffs. CP should have refused. That might have put pressure on the boder to allow a reasonable amount of de minimis. Now we have zero. Integrating Zonos with eBay turns the entire shipping service into a political choice.
Some may not be aware of who ZONOS is;
"Zonos is primarily owned and led by its founder and CEO, Clint Reid, who started the cross-border technology company in 2009. While it operated as a bootstrapped company for many years, in 2021, Silversmith Capital Partners led a $69 million Series A funding round, becoming a significant institutional investor. "
After Chris Reid and the main Zonos investor (Silversmith) was put in play following their donation of one million dollars to Trump's election Trump appointed them trustee to collect his tariffs. All of the money they collect after their cut goes directly to Donald Trumps US Treasury .
In my mind, under these circumstances, Canada Post never should have undertaken it's partnership with Zonos in the first place. eBay should have contested the complete abandonment of the de minimis. eBay Canada should now at least be petitioning Washington to restore a reasonable amount of duty free trade.
eBay partnering with Zonos would be like Trump buying drones from Putin.
No thank you. Let's not bring politics (ZONOS) into eBay shipping.
ZONOS stands for "ZERO De Minimis".

·4 months agoI was responding to someone on this thread saying that Etsy has integrated Zonos into their shipping which is not true.
I don't know anything about Zonos but to me it sounded like too much trouble to even attempt to use that to make a sale. Too many things can go wrong. So for now leaving US buyers out on Etsy. On ebay I've had a couple of sales and they have gone through EIS so didn't have to deal with tariffs, etc. I understand the double shipping part for buyers. It sucks. Its what we've been dealing with for years when buying from the US.
Thanks for explaining what Zonos is all about. I am not the one advocating for them here. All I'm saying is I wish there was an easier method to ship to the US. You're right. Get rid of the friggen tariffs and reinstall the $800 deminimus. Doesn't think anything through before he acts. The usual toddler's tantrum.
intimewithmusic
·4 months agoHi.
You're not alone. Most users of Zonos don't know because they didn't do the research. It's a choice for sellers to make depending on ethics. It's a bit like lettermail. As you say their are quirks just like lettermail.
I think it's important to make an "informed" choice when it comes to Zonos. Then, you're entitled not to care about enabling it if you want.
My concern is no one is talking about the de minimis anymore. The $800 has been under scrutiny long before Trumps session began. Thanks to Temu and others from China Biden was about to change it but I don't think he would have eliminated it.
A de minimis is a citizen's right. It's sort of a handshake between individuals from one country to another. Most democratic countires support some level of it just not in the amount of $800. That was excessive and opened the door to exploitation. Given the population of the USA an amount of $100 was what I would expect for them. It would need to be small enough to discourage the major chinese exploiters. they could have a multi level system like Canada.
Canada has two de minimis levels. One for NAFTA ($150) and one for everyone else ($40). If people ask for a reasonable amount they might get it but no one's asking. As soon as Chris Reid company (Zonos) starting asking for the windfall he eventually got eBay should have been the 1st corporation literrally jumping up and down demanding a reasonable de minimis. After all it would have benefited both eBay Canada and eBay USA.
You snooze you lose. Unfortunately eBay snoozed. Then came EIS, which is a big cash cow. Hardly anyone wants EIS but without any low value duty free eBay has a new revenue flow at least that's what they think. They may have missed the fact EIS eliminates the ability for Canadians especially those far from the huib to compete in the USA with USPS.
