2017 Canada Post parcel rates effective Jan 16, 2017

Here is a document on 2017 Canada Post rates for parcels - it is called commercial rates and I believe it reflects the 5% discounted Venture One rates - that is,how saving on the Find a Rate page.

https://www.canadapost.ca/tools/pg/prices/SBParcels_2017-e.pdf

Rates do not include fuel surcharges for those services that have fuel surcharges..

Small Packet USA 2017  250g/500g/1kg  $8.61 $11.29  $16.82

Compare to

Small Packet USA 2016  250g/500g/1kg  $8.36 $11.07  $16.65

Increases for small Packet USA seem reasonable.

No info on Light Packet USA as far as I see. This is normal, light packet takes longer to find out.

Here is the Canada Post website changes page with 2017 changes on it. Lettermail is there. Scroll down to see the Price Sheets links. Parcel link is not there yet.

https://www.canadapost.ca/web/en/kb/details.page?article=service_and_price_ch&cattype=kb&cat=sending...

Seems like no increase to Lettermai/Letterpost. I do not have time to check in detail right now, going by memory.

Re: 2017 Canada Post parcel rates effective Jan 16, 2017

Do I read it correctly about the mandatory signature and insurance fees on parcels, even if not wanted?

If so, it is a very big cash grab at the consumer's expense and with ecommerce for the buyer as well.

Going to really hurt ecommerce within Canada, especially for small sellers

Just read some more, I gather the signature fee applies only if you want additional insurance?

If you send a parcel worth 600.00 and no additional insurance needed , signature is not needed also??

As I read it:

If you want more than $100 insurance, then signature will be also be required (for extra $$ if not already included).

So for your example: send a parcel worth $600, and only use the basic $100 insurance, then signature is not required. Insure for $600 then signature is required.

Re: 2017 Canada Post parcel rates effective Jan 16, 2017

I don't understand what this means:

Removal of Lettermail Presort category

  • In January 2017, Lettermail Presort will be discontinued. This will impact both Standard and Oversize mail categories. Lettermail Presort items already meet Machineable Mail requirements, and deposit locations accepting Lettermail Presort will also accept Machineable Lettermail. Take advantage of the fewer mail preparation requirements!

This is for volume mailers with hundreds, thousands, or more Lettermail. For example, utility gas bills, phone bills and so on. Not for an eBay seller with a couple of Lettermail items to mail.

In the first link there is this about signatures and when & why,

undefined

And in the second link it is mentioned under SOME KEY CHANGES

undefined

At least that's where I see it.  I think it only applies depending on the service used and how much.

Re: 2017 Canada Post parcel rates effective Jan 16, 2017

Thanks mj, that answers my question.  Unless I am misreading it, when you use domestic parcel, expedited or xpresspost they are basically raising the price of insurance if you insure for $200+.  I think that if you are paying $6.75+ for insurance they could easily include the signature instead of charging for it.

You're welcome, and I don't mind others getting the credit at all.  I would be mortified, however, if it had been a 'wrong' answer and someone else got 'blamed'.   😉

I am not at all surprised that fees and costs went up.  This will be to offset the payouts on the number of claims they receive. What I want to know is what are WE going to get for the extra cost.  Where's that reasonably-priced DELIVERY CONFIRMED TRACKING that everybody wants?

$1.50 extra for signature on a $200+ insured shipment is not going to really hurt ecommerce.

It's not going to improve it, but it's also not going to do major damage.

...

If a seller does not want signature, then they can buy insurance from a 3rd party insurance company rather than direct from the post office.

Re: 2017 Canada Post parcel rates effective Jan 16, 2017

Went to OP's link  and viewed the new prices for Expedited Parcels  Canada.

The Rate codes were listed as Alphabet  and number

Alphabets  A to H  then J followed by a number 1 to 7  for a total of 45 rates.

 --------------------------------------------------------

Then I went to Canada Post's website  and found the page for rate codes.

and found that the rate code for my postal code was 31....

Link to the rate code determination page... and I get numbers with no alphabet.

https://www.canadapost.ca/tools/pg/prices/FSA_RateCodeLookup-e.asp

There is a problem with tying the two bits of information together...  Postal prices versus rate codes???
