I'm thinking about getting a software package to keep my books. Of course I need one that handles USD as well as Canadian. I have been thinking about using Quick Books Pro.

Any comments / suggestions?

Also, how do you guys handle Paypal? I was thinking about setting it up as a separate USD bank account. Comments?

Be sure you get Quickbooks Pro Canadian edition and not the US one. The US one doesn't support any foreign currencies (ie CDN). I found this one out the hard way.

A few years ago I checked out some of the accounting programs.....the problem was the exchange rates between Canada and the US seemed to be hard if not impossible to balance...the other problem was they were far from user friendly and expensive....What is the situation now....we do most of out books by hand....it takes for ever but we have to keep the paper industry going as we live in Northwest Ontario 😉

About 3 years ago, Simply started supporting US$ transactions and we have found it to be easy to learn, easy to set up, easy to use.

I use an old version of Quick Books Pro, then whenever I do a transfer (ie Paypal) I convert all invoices and payments to whatever exchange I get that day, and it always balances perfect!

I tried MYOB awhile back, but it does not reverse invoices, like if I edit a bill to reflect proper exchange, it would not change the invoices that it affects. Quickbooks does.

Will any of these break down the sales taxes on a net sale? For instance, we have some customers who get annoyed and confused if we itemize all the taxes for them so we usually just give them a net price (like $200.00, taxes included). So, would either of these programs do the breakdown for me when I enter a sale payment received of $200.00 or would I still have to have my trusty calculator at the ready?

And speaking of sales taxes, has anyone figured out how to get eBay.com's checkout to let you show the sales tax(es) when appropriate? They don't have a category except for individual states which makes it awkward.

Aren't you required by the GST rules to have the GST amount itemized over a certain dollar limit as well as include your GST number? I thought it was any amount over $50CDN

No, PST we're required to show it, GST can be included as long as you say it's included and provide your GST number.
