Adding GST to invoices?

HI, I'm thinking about charging GST to my cdn. customers (I've just been "including" it in my fees). Is there any way to have that automatically added into the invoice that ebay sends out?

I've been listing on ebay.com and there doesn't seem to be any way to do that, and tried a listing on ebay.ca, but don't see that option anywhere. Does anyone have any advice on how I go about adding in the GST?

Thanks!!

Not that I'm aware of. I have also just started charging GST as I cannot afford to eat it any more. I've been putting the tax in the shipping box with a note in the description box explaining what I've done.

Same here, if you look at my listings I define sales taxes quite explicitly (who can afford to eat up to 15% if the sale is intra-province).

Then when the goods sell, if they remain in Canada I include the total of freight, GST and PST as applicable as freight on the invoice and then provide an explanation breaking down the freight amount.

I have never had anyone indicate they were not prepared to pay sales tax, because it is indicated on the listing. (I have probably lost sales because we charge sales taxes, but margins are so slim, it is better to loose the sale then subsidize it to no margin).

I put tax in my terms and refuse to ship until all tax due has been paid with No Exceptions. I shipped a couple of times trusting that people would pay and about 50% did so now I hard-line it as everyone knows they have to pay tax.

I send out an email that sets the price in US and Cdn funds (for Cdn customers) and includes what tax is due.

Wow, thanks for your quick responses! It's hard to believe that ebay doesn't have a way to automatically include that. I couldn't find it either, though, so that's why I asked.

One more thing, is GST added to the total, including s/h or just the item price. (DH and I are having a disagreement about that... 🙂 )

Thanks again for your help!!

GST = goods and services tax.
so shipping is a service and is taxeable as well as the items being the goods.

You can, of course, claim the GST you pay on the postage as an ITC when you file your return.

One of the main reasons why I use Marketworks is that I can customize the taxes properly and charge GST, PST or even HST automatically without having to do any extra work. It's done for me at checkout based on my rules. I sure pay for the service, but I rather pay that than chase people and argue with them about $3.00 of PST...

Another nice feature is that I get proper invoices, feedback management and order tracking. All I need to do is check orders paid, print invoices, pick the orders and ship. I copy the shipping info from the softcopy of the invoices and using Clipmate, explode that info directly into the CPC desktop tool, then print the labels and voila ! all done! it takes me about 20 seconds per order to enter into CPC and print the label / customs. Can't beat that... unless I had an interface doing it for me (And trust me I know, I have been working for logistics companies for 10 years)

I'd love to use Marketworks, but don't want to spend the extra $$ 🙂

I don't know if this helps anyone, but this morning, when I was trying different things, I changed something in paypal. I think it was under "merchant tools" but I was able to choose to add 7% GST to Canadians. I thought it would only work if I had a shopping cart for a website, but today I've received two payments with GST included which has *never* happened before. I don't even have the GST included message on the auctions ending today, so I'm assuming it's being down automatically, somehow.

Anyway, I'm not exactly sure how it's working, but maybe that will help.

Thanks for all the help today!! -Jeanette

If you use PayPal's invoicing system rather than eBay's it will allow you to automatically add GST but not PST. It is not consistant however, when I used it it would work about 80% of the time.

Now I send my invoices manually and put the taxes in the insurance box as "required" and explain it on the invoice.
