For a Canadian deer, Bimbo has an unusually comfortable life. She eats cookies, pop and chips, dances to Elvis — Jailhouse Rock is her jam. She even sleeps in her own bed, the same kind her owner, Janet Schwartz, sleeps in. The 69-year-old British Columbia woman said she saved Bimbo’s life after finding her as a newly orphaned fawn a decade ago.
Q: What about her diet? The government is worried about that – they think she’s getting too fat, that it’s going to hurt her teeth. A: She’s got good teeth I can guarantee you that. I brush her teeth. Just about every night. There’s nothing wrong with her teeth at all.
Q: Do you think there’s any room for compromise? Like if you got people in the community to help build a fence, so Bimbo could stay?
A: I would love that because then I could build a great big fence around the yard, she could run all day long. Except I’m on a pension myself, can’t afford to buy fencing. If I could get that fencing and put her out in the yard here, it would be no problem, she could run all day.
Q: But what about bringing her in the house, if they have a problem with that?
A: I could leave her outside, I have a pen outside for her. And I could leave her out in her pen all night if need be. But that’ll be hard to adjust to. Yes, I want her with me at all times. I don’t want to lose her. I’m very upset about it right now, in fact I’m just shaking.
