Canada Post, August 25, 2016, Strike Potential

The Postal Union (CUPW), has been making regular reports with respect to the negotiations with Canada Post  (CPC).

The following information  is from CUPW’s report on its website as  of Friday, August 12

CUPW voted with the possibility of a strike at the end of June.  This option to strike lasts for 60 days.

The 60 day time period ends August 25….  Negotiations can continue if CPC agrees to do so by way of a written agreement.

If there is no agreement to continue negotiations  the union must declare a strike before the 60 days after the last strike vote ends.

The critical date is Thursday, August 25.  If there is going to be a legal strike…  the union must declare  so before August 25.

CUPW will give 72 hours notice of the beginning of a strike.

It is time to mark August 25 on our calendars….

They reached an agreement 🙂

From CUPW:

Tentative Agreements (Aug 30)

We have worked relentlessly for the past few days with the assistance of Special Mediator William Kaplan and the head of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services, Guy Baron, to finalize our negotiations.

Bargaining continued until the early hours of this morning and we have now achieved two agreements in principle, one for each of the RSMC and Urban Bargaining Units. The negotiating committee has unanimously recommended to the National Executive Board that we accept these agreements in principle. The majority of the National Executive Board has voted to accept these agreements and are recommending that the membership ratify them.

Coming to an agreement on this aspect of negotiation is a great BIG step.

Tuesday August 30 2016

For Immediate Release

OTTAWA - Agreements in principle have been reached by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and Canada Post for both the urban and rural bargaining units.

“We can’t give details of the agreements at this time, but we’re pleased that our members don’t have to resort to taking job action,” said Mike Palecek, national president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

The agreements must be ratified by fifty thousand postal workers across the country before they become the new contracts.

How long does it take to ratify?

members will still have to vote on it for final approval, but when their union reps are recommending accepting it, that is a good thing, "knock on wood",  should be a done deal..
