How do you avoid being flagged for an unpaid item when cancelling a purchase agreement when the complete terms are unknown?

I agreed to a small purchase costing about $17.00 however the delivery price wasn't shown. The next page showed the total charges with delivery added coming to $35.00 which I thought was excessive. I cancelled out without posting credit card info. This resulted in an unpaid item being flagged against my account. I think the delivery costs should have been posted up-front where it would have been clear. I assumed, evidently in error, that I would have various delivery options.

It showed the shipping charges on the listing which you apparently didn't read through.

Pay for the item to avoid an unpaid item strike. Shipping was stated in the listing.

Yes I can see the shipping costs now, however at the time they were not shown on my display until the next screen, and by then it was too late. I can't explain it, however, having such a large vertical separation between the price info and the shipping info invites mishaps like this.
