How to List for Lowest Fees

I'm about to list a more expensive collectable item and it just occurred to me that FVFs might vary depending on the category I choose.

Is that true, and if so which category would be most in my favour?

I recall reading something about a ceiling on FVFs but I can't find that now or was that just a temporary promotion?

"which category would be most in my favour?"

For sellers with an eBay store, "stamps" are relatively cheap with FVF of 6.0% or 4.8% for TRS.

For listings on eBay.com:  http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/storefees.html

For listings on eBay.ca: http://pages.ebay.ca/help/sell/storefees.html

Auto Parts & Accessories is 8%, less with TRS.

Moving categories might save some money. Trouble is, then you will be in the wrong category. eBay is pushing for us to be in the "correct" category.

eBay has directly stated that keywords are less important when you are in the correct category.

I remember a promotion where there was a limit to FVFs for certain categories not that long ago.

I can't find it now and this item would work in several categories.

Is that promotion over?

I've noticed some intentionally miscategorizing listings to try and get the lower fee.  That can have an effect on exposure.  If the buyer narrows their results with the category menu, items will not show at all if they are in a different category.  Presumably would also affect best match placement.

I've been watching a decent size game seller who switched all their game listings to various electronic categories with significantly lower fvf, where they can't use the catalog.  They havent had many game sales since.

Yes, that was earlier in September, and is over now.  It was a very unusual offer, the first I've ever seen of its kind on eBay (i.e. with a discount on FVFs included in the offer), and I grabbed it to list some expensive items.  It was however, for a very limited number of listings, under 100 if I recall.

Although I had my doubts that the offer would actually be implemented properly (since there have been issues with promos not working as they should), lo and behold, I checked my billing account later and I did in fact get the extra 20% off the FVFs on those (above and beyond my usual 20% TRS discount).  Wow, was I happy, I saved a lot of money.  Now that was a great promo!

The offer was on Sept 10-14 and celebrated eBay's 20th anniversary. You could list 20 items with a 20% off FVF rates.

Yup, that's the one.  I guess we'll have to wait until eBay's 25th to get that deal again. Woman LOL

A seller can have a listing(s) reported for listing in the wrong category.
