I feel invisible!

Wow, last summer was slow, but this summer is dead.  I keep checking, I don't know what for.  This is just like watching paint dry, very demotivating.

Re: I feel invisible!

Hi Mr. Elmwood.  Thanks for your advice.

I used "free shipping for about 1 and 1/2 year for Canada.  When they changed the shipping costs in March, in May, I reduced the price of the item and changed the shipping to reflect the actual shipping.  I used to ship within Canada for $1.10 now it is Cdn $2.95 (acutally 3.10 with tax) US shipping was $2.20 now is 3.79 (actually $4.00 with tax) and International was $4.36 and now is 6.51.   I used to ship without CD cases so they went as letter mail, but I changed when the postal costs went up.

I may go back to "free shipping" but I am trying this first.

Re: I feel invisible!

Oh no you don't! I don't give advice. Advice has a way of coming back and biting me. All I am doing is giving a different point of view for anyone to consider. Americans have a way below average ability with math. Pretty much anyone under 35 has never used a pencil and paper, they use the calculator in their cell phone.

Re: I feel invisible!

The poster above mentioned tax on US and international shipments. As long as the total shipped to the US and Canada at one time is $5 or greater then there is no tax ( GST or HST). Many postal folks especially at Shoppers, Saples, etc seem to "forget " the no tax  on US and international shipments.

Re: I feel invisible!

Hi,fatdane, shipping to the US for me is $3.79 and because it is under $5.00, they charge me tax.  On the international amount, I do not get charged tax.

Re: I feel invisible!

Thanks for your different point of view them. I may go back to "free" shipping or rounding up or down the amounts.

I just wanted to thank you for your point of view.

My POV is usually through the bottom of a crystal wine glass. Very much distorted.

You are welcome.

Re: I feel invisible!

There is a psychology about numbers. I worked retail and it fascinated me.

Lower the price and customers complain about the price going up, again. Eh? We lowered it, how can that be. customers do not remember what the price was, they only notice a difference. A difference is perceived to be an increase.

$19 is less than $21, but, $23 is not less than $26. Again, eh? Customers perceive a barrier at $20 so that below $20 is less and above is more. However, we discovered that "in the twenties" it did not matter what the price was.

People are a sucker for a sale. Customer would always buy whiskey A @ $20 a bottle. So, we would put whiskey B, which the customer did not even like, on sale from $25 down to $24. B would fly off the shelf.

"Its on sale! YEAH! I'm saying!" Um, er, ah, no yer not, yer paying $4 more. How is paying $24 for something you do not want, better than paying $20 for what ya do want?

I am not convinced that price is that big of a motivator for people. Buyers are looking for something more in every listing. Price pointing, number psychology, value added listings, pictures, descriptions, etc.

Take a look at how eBay defines a "great" listing. I have never seen low or lowest price mentioned. I see "great" pictures, "great" description, worldwide shipping, etc.

Re: I feel invisible!

There are many things that could contribute to invisibility... atleast in relation to sales.

(1) The HACK... need we say more.....  But the slow down in sales was already there at he beginning of May.

(2) The exchange rate....Sellers list in US dollars....  buyers buy... and then find out they are paying more than expected when the bill comes in Canadian dollars..

(3) The economy$$$$$$... could be...perhaps

Then the opposite...

In 2013  sales to US buyer were 20 % of the total in sales..... Then came June 2014... and US sales were 35 % of total sales......

Are US buyers adjusting to the high cost of postage.. perhaps

or are Canadian buyer buying less.... and making US sales  look good percentage wise... but the same in absolute numbers...

and finally .... eBay does things....  testing to see the results

I saw the following on the eBay.com discussion board.....

Start a search     and eBay shows the results of a search.... but not all of the listings are shown... until   you click a special... see all results

Could the effect of not showing all results  be... lower sales for everyone...  and perhaps lower sales for eBay..... Maybe....

There are external factors,  and there are things specific to eBay..... The end result...What could that be?

Or... Is this a wacky summer  for everyone?

I believe it is. The common refrain seems to be that the slowdown started in early May and continued through June.  July .... well we'll see.

The 2nd last week of May, also the week of the "hack" announcement, was awesome for me! Way above average BIN sales and even the next week, last of May, was all fine and dandy, right in line with my averages.

Then, June 1st came and it was like someone shut off my visibility.
