LIGHT PACKET RATE INCREASE EFFECTIVE MONDAY, JAN 13

For any one not aware, the huge light packet price increases are effective Monday Jan 13.

If you have listings up and have not adjusted shipping, I suggest you do it this weekend or lose your shirt on shipping the items based on the old rates.

The joys of Canada Post who do not answer their phone and just have recordings. I wonder why?

LIGHT PACKET RATE INCREASE EFFECTIVE MONDAY, JAN 13

The light packet rates work awesome for me .. at first i though i am screwed but then i realized 95% of my product weighed over 100 grams but less then 150grams so 95% of item going to the US I was having to charge $5.53 for 100-200 grams but now i only have to charge $3.64 instead and considering i off fre domestic and deduct that off US shipping I will not be shipping my US item for about $1.80 instead of $4 ...

If your wondering how I got that is is based on the New domestic lettermail rates increasing so the free shipping that i dedecuted was $1.50 and it now $1.80

So 5.53 -$1.50

NOW 3.64-1.80

My US  sales will sky rocket now YEAAAAAAHHHHH BOY

Really, wow. I waited on hold for over 10 minutes after having to play with their voice mail which was a pain in the ___. The woman that finally picked up had no clue and was looking thru a book to find answers.. She told me that they were flooded with calls but given very little info on the rate increases except for light packet which was changing on Monday. She was pleasant & the call centre was in Canada so that was a plus.

Yes indeedy, ain't Canada Post just wonderful!!

A comparison of rates:

                            2013              2014 (eff. 1/13)

                     Letter   LtPk       Letter   LtPk

0-100 g        2.20     2.65       2.20     3.79  (72% increase LtPk over Letter)

100-150g    3.80     5.53       3.80     3.79

150-200 g   3.80     5.53       3.80     6.37  (68% increase)

200-250 g   7.60     5.53       7.60     6.37  (19%  decrease)

250-500 g   7.60     8.89       7.60   10.66  (40% increase)

And all this for IDENTICAL MAIL PIECES, sent by IDENTICAL MEANS (air), WITHOUT INSURANCE.

Talk about Loony Tunes...

No question, the inmates are still in charge at the asylum.

SHOOT!!  I didn't realize CP had just moved the weight bar up for Light Packet.  I just sent out 2 Light Packet items today, and got charged $5.53 for each.  They both weighed about 140gms and I thought I'd just round it out at 150gms because they were each going to go into the next rate anyway -- OK, now I know not to do that again!!

By the way, if the rate hike to $5.53 was supposed to start on Jan. 13th, it apparently started today (at least for me).

Like you, brande, this is going to be good news for me, since so many of my items just slipped over the 100gm weight once packed.  So now I'm saving close to $2 on every one of those types of items over what I was paying last year.  That, together with the lower $Cdn, will make a big difference to me!

5.53 is not a price hike it is the current light packet cost for 100-250 grams ..

These changes work out GREAT for me ...

Yeah i dod only ship to Canada and the US but i researched this weeks ago so i figure it out ...

Might go back to shipping to the uk and australia again by mid year but not sure yet

Rose, $5.53 is still the old rate for that LP weight class, (.101g to .250g)

If the new rates were in effect and you'd put a weight of .150 the rate would have been $3.79.

Oh, you're right, now that I look at it.

In my listings, I show rates from a year or two ago, so I don't increase my shipping costs every time CP changes its rates anyway.  Saves a lot of bother and time-wasting every January.

The new weight distribution in Light Packet, will make a significant difference on my lighter items, and I'll be able to adjust my international shipping costs down for those too.  I wouldn't mind more int'l sales!

Right -- so an item weighing 151 gms will now be $6.37, which is a big hike.

That will affect about 40% of my items, but the savings on the lighter ones (plus the savings on $Cdn exchange rate) will pretty much even out.  I'm just going to leave all my currently posted shipping rates as they are -- most are still from 2012 and look good to my US buyers.

I am surprised so many did not catch the change in the 100 grams class to 150 grams for Light Packet. It was mentioned in the very first topic on the new rates in December and in other topics on the new rates.  It was mentioned that there was a decrease in rates in the 101 to 150 gram class and to take advantage of it.

Even the original notice from Canada Post said made note of the change saying they did it to help users of the service cope with the large increase for Light Packet 100 grams cost.

https://www.canadapost.ca/cpo/mc/aboutus/news/announcements/light_packet.jsf

Canada Post is making changes to its Light Packet service, beginning in January 2014. Light Packet is an economical service that allows customers to ship small goods up to 500 grams to the U.S. or to an international destination.

To address increased processing costs related to the service, Canada Post will raise Light Packet rates. To mitigate customer impact, the rate increase will be phased in over several years, and will vary depending on weight and destination. To further help customers with the transition, the allowable weight in the first and most economical tier of Light Packet pricing will increase from 100 grams to 150 grams. The new rates, effective January 13, 2014, are shown below.

Canada Post continually evaluates its services to ensure it remains financially self-sufficient while meeting the needs of all Canadians. The Light Packet service has strict weight and size restrictions which enable Canada Post to offer the service at rates far below those of its competitors. Despite the rate increase, Light Packet will remain more affordable than comparable options offered by competitors.

Canada Post appreciates customers’ understanding and will continue to offer reliable, secure and economical shipping options.

The barefaced, unmitigated gall of Canada Post in feeding their customers this complete  takes my breath away.

Why should there be any difference in rates for identical pieces of mail transmitted by identical means?

If PJ and I are the only ones bothered by this, it's little wonder the postal service Canadians get is what they deserve.

It appears that my last message caught the eye of the ever-watchful "eBay Canada Community community" and the word between 'complete' and 'takes' in my sentence

was excised.  You can substitute your own word or expression but how about 'load of horsefeathers'?

Some of these increases are beyond excessive. I can't understand how CPC thinks that by raising rates like this, they will generate more income. while in the short term this may be true. It can only hurt the Canadian seller's ability to compete with other countries, resulting in lower service utilization and eventually lower revenues...

I am all for reasonable increases to adjust for operating costs. But this is ridiculous. Have the CPC workers pension obligations really put them in the hole this deep? If things continue this way, I can't see a bright future for Canadian eTail or the CPC.

Just sayin' is all...

Actually, that is a huge problem for Canada Post.  One billion dollars is a lot of money:
