Ontario Sales Tax calculating incorrectly...

I had 2 different Ontario buyers that paid today and the invoice showed no sales tax on one and 8.025% on two others (same buyer who pd. for 2 items separately). I contacted Live Help and they said it is a problem they are aware of and are working on right now.

Has anyone else had a problem with this?

calculating taxes is far to complicated for a small operation like eBay.

Live Help and they said it is a problem they are aware of and are working on right now.

If they are halfway finished "working" it should be ready in 2012.

I've had the same problem for awhile now. Sometimes it will calculate it and sometimes not.

I have 6 cases in the last few days where there has been no Sales Tax collected. It was the same problem last year at XMas.

What do you do when the tax is not calculated? Do you adjust the selling price and take the loss there to pay the tax? I am 100% sure that eBay will not reimburse us for the loss or adjust our fees.....lol!..... I am also sure that the buyers would not be impressed if I asked them for more money.

If eBay has been aware of the problem for a year, how long does it take them to fix it? (If a tree falls in the forest........)

I've had that problem a few times. I eat the cost - not the buyer's fault and it's not worth the headache going after eBay.

I had the same problem a few times. I made the mistake of contacting eBay via email, and the response I got was:

"We cannot offer advice on complicated tax matters, this question would better be answered by your accountant."

Ontario Sales Tax calculating incorrectly...

I'll preface by saying this is my first message I have ever posted and I never complain.

I had this problem as well. I tried to reclaim dollars from my customers on numerous items that were over $200 a piece. So far no luck. I am out a lot of money and ebay doesn't want to help. They suggested that I raise the price of the auction to compensate for the loss of taxes. I explained that this will create higher fees for me and even more money for them. They then suggested that I send an invoice to the customer but my account automatically generates the invoice and people have the option to pay immediately with PayPal so I am out of luck with that too. When I asked if I could turn that function off, they told me no. I then asked if they could post a universal message across my listings stating that there is an issue with the taxes for Canadian customers ... no luck there. When I asked how they intend to compensate and who I should email, they responded that there was no one to email. I guess I am out $'s.

Any ideas? Has anyone else had any luck?

One last comment...
The Customer Service rep I spoke with acknowledged that there was a "service issue" I spoke with them on Sept. 8th.

You can turn checkout off and manually send invoices with the correct taxes.

Recped, you CANNOT turn off eBay checkout if you accept PayPal. I've posted this many times to you. eBay's stupid system overrides any manual settings if you accept PayPal.

You've got to stop telling people that because it can't be done. 😞 If you know how to override it, I implore you to share because it can't be done. eBay overrides our preferences simply because we accept their stupid PayPal.

Wanna see how? Do the following:

Go to your My eBay, then go to Preferences.

Click on show - Payment From Buyers. Mine shows Use Checkout - NO. Now click on edit.

Now read what it says under Checkout.

Use Checkout (recommended)
Note: Checkout is always on in closed listings where PayPal is offered.

eBay turns it on automatically regardless of what we have it set to. I have checkout off and it shows it as NO when I look at my preferences in the Payment From Buyers section. It's not checked off in the edit section of Payment From Buyers but the stupid bleeping system still allows people to use it because I accept PayPal.

We DON'T have a choice. It's been like this for a couple of years at least now. I hate it with a passion but none of us have a choice. If we accept PayPal, eBay overrides our settings.

It's simple, don't select PayPal as a payment method (although you can still indicate in your listing description that you accept PayPal).

😮 Can it really be that easy?? Seriously?? 😮

OMG I've been banging my head against the wall ever since they've done this. 😞

Ok I see in your listings how you don't have all the lovely PayPal decals and buttons and whatnot so that makes sense but what about the buyer protection info that eBay tries to get buyers to cherish? Will they still be elligible for any (not that they'd necessarily need it because I deliver what I sell)?

Your listings don't show any buyer protection info, presumably because you don't have the PayPal showing through eBay as an accepted payment method but do they still get it? You certainly sell enough so the question may be moot, but, do you have any customer issues with not showing the PayPal logo?

Thank you so much!!! 🙂 I really appreciate it.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to come across as an ahole or anything but I've B'd at eBay about this and they pretty much say tough nuggies. When I read just turn off checkout...well, no, that won't work. But turn off PayPal and turn off checkout sure makes sense! I still hate how they offer you the option of turning off checkout and then override your settings anyways. :(

I really don't know about buyer protection but I'll make an ASSUMPTION (never really a good idea and only in bold so it's clear I'm not stating this as fact) that if a buyer pays for an eBay transaction with PayPal it's covered regardless if the seller let's PayPal insert all their crappy logos.

do you have any customer issues with not showing the PayPal logo?

Every once in a while I get a potential bidder ask if I do accept PayPal, it's about the same number of questions as when my listings actually stated "we do not accept PayPal". What I get more of is when I send my email notice with payment instructions buyers occasionally respond "Oh I didn't think you accepted PayPal!"

Let's face it, very few buyers read the TOS. There was a time when "officially" accepting PayPal was sort of meaningful as some buyers would actually include that as part of their search terms. These days virtually all listings accept PayPal (in my category at least) so it's pretty meaningless.

If I could change just two things on eBay it would be to blow up My Messages and Checkout. Lots of other things I would change but I don't want to be greedy!

Oh and by the way you can still display all the PayPal logo's you like in your description (I just like to display none).
