Hello all,
I am new to the boards but have been a buyer on ebay for over 10 years.
I've noticed many items for sale in the US are using the new global shipping program. I'm quite leary about it and haven't found any positive info from Canadian buyers.
So.....has anyone had any positive experiences as a buyer using the global shipping program?
Anyone been charged extra upon delivery?

There have been a couple of topics regarding GSP. Many negative experiences especially for low price items with high charges.
Read this long topic. More experiences are at the end of the topic

Yes I have read that thread previously and many others online. I know there are many many negative experiences, i'm interested in positives. Maybe there are none.
I also hadn't found anything online about extra fees upon delivery. I know the program says the fees are paid upfront but I could see that not being totally true.

I don't see how there could be a positive experience when , for most people, they will not be able to see the extra charges until they go to check out. When you consider that a very good percentage of parcels clear customs into Canada with no duty, or taxes added, why would you want to pay these up front. For Canadian buyers, this new program is a lose / lose proposition.

I'm not arguing for the gsp. I don't like it just as much as anyone else but it does exist and it's popping up more and more. There are still going to be Canadians who will buy products from people who use the program.
I'm looking at buying an item from a seller enrolled in the program. The fees will only be an extra $3.36 which I am fine with paying since the item is still much cheaper then buying it locally. If you go on ebay, com you can see clearly what to expect for fees(you can't see them on ebay.ca). How accurate they are I don't know since I haven't bought anything with gsp before.
To the people who have bought items using the gsp:
We're the fees quoted accurate?
We're there any fees due upon delivery?
Was the package received in good time?
04-15-2013 01:06 PM
Yes, I have seen posts from Canadian buyers where the fees paid were less than the Canada Post $9.95 brokerage fee.
Taxes are obviously the same - if charged.
And that is the big problem. Many Canadian buyers have received parcels from the USA over the years where taxes should have been charged (over $20 value) by Canada Customs but were not.
On that basis, most buyers expecting to pay nothing, balk at the certainty of paying taxes when Pitney Bowes handles the shipment.

Yes, there will be some who buy items shipped via the GSP, but almost all of those will be by accident.
That is, the vast majority of those buyers will have bought without being aware of GSP costs, and then feel obligated to follow through.
They more than likely will no like it one bit, and chances are they will never return to eBay because it's mostly newbies getting caught up in it.
The answers to your question........... I have never completed a GSP transaction.
I'm not sure what you mean by are the fees accurate? You'll see the bill including item cost plus shipping plus GSP costs. That's accurate.
You can be pretty sure there won't be additional costs after the fact unless someone messes up along the way.
Packages will take a little longer to arrive because they get shipped twice.

"Yes, there will be some who buy items shipped via the GSP, but almost all of those will be by accident.

And here is why US sellers are signing on without fully checking out the details (I got this from my "Selling" page when I logged into eBay.com):
"Enroll in the Global Shipping Program Finally, international shipping made simple. No customs forms. No hassles.
Selling globally is easy, and international shipping is now hassle free. Once your item sells, just ship to a US hub and the rest is taken care of. Why not give it a try?
Start now!"
You click and you're in. Simple as pie. What they don't tell sellers is that not all international buyers will understand how to see the full costs or what delivery times to expect before they buy, and that they'll end up with angry buyers who probably won't come back. I expect to see this seller enticement show up on eBay.ca one day soon too...
I can't report any good experiences with the GSP when buying from the US, because I avoid it like the plague.

" I expect to see this seller enticement show up on eBay.ca one day soon too..."
Will not happen any time soon.
Why?
Because Canadian sellers already ship to the USA and overseas. We do not require the assistance of a third party. Since most goods shipped from Canada to the USA enter the USA tax free (under $200) there is little to gain by setting up an unneeded system that few sellers will ever use.

Excellent points, and reassuring for me!
This is off topic, and more in the way of a rhetorical question, but why should there be a discrepancy between tax free levels going from/to the U.S. at all? Canadian protectionism and encouragement of export to the US? It's seemed to me that true "Free Trade" between our countries is wishful thinking.

""Free Trade" between our countries is wishful thinking. "
Free Trade is for real. It applies to tariffs, not consumption taxes.
Why the difference?
The USA does not have a national consumption tax like Canada (GST) and most of the rest of the world (VAT). As such, it would be meaningless for them to have a low exemption.
In Canada and most of the rest of industrialized world, relartively low import exemptions minimize cross-border shopping for the sole purpose of tax avoidance.
In other words, buyers pay the same consumption taxes (GST/HST, VAT) when buying outside their country by mail as they would should they purchase the item from a local retailer.
From a Canadian standpoint, it also helps preserve retail jobs in Canada. Without those relatively low paying jobs, our economy would tank.

Yes, as I said, protectionism.

I decided to try my hand at purchasing the item I referred to earlier from a seller who uses the gsp.
I was only charged the $3.34 for import/custom fees same as what they estimated. I'm anxious to see if there is in fact a fee upon delivery, who knows...
I will post my experiences when/if the item arrives. I've already received my tracking number so now i'll dance the dance:)
Cheers!

I see the global shipping program is for ups shipping so I will pay them and then receive my product with no other charges? fat chance for that I will then have to pay fees on this end equal to or more than we will be charged there. Been there done that.
plus also UPS will not door deliver and its a 10 mile drive to pick anything up from them when they are open.
I have not used UPS in years to ship anything to Canada unless i have to, due to their double charging game.
they are also overcharging , If i order a 60.00 US product by mail i pay 3.00 gst using the new global shippping program its over 10.00 guess i wont be shopping there.
unfortunately it will affect the sellers in this situation as if I have to pay cross border charges to them at their end and then are charged here again the will get no stars from me and I will be making that perfectly clear to them at time of purchase That way they have been warned of the situation

If this item is valued at less than $20.00 Canadian there would be NO import/ fees applied by Canada. In that case you gave ebay and Pitney Bowes a profit of $3.34.

Not only did you give P-B $3.34, you also paid for shipping it twice.
First, to the seller.
Second, to P-B, and as far as I can see they only up-graded seriously expensive shipping methods.
If you think about it P-B really has to use shipping methods with tracking because if a buyer should claim an item didn't arrive that could get really wonky otherwise.

I just ignoe ALL auctions that say
"Customs services and international tracking provided"
problem solved.

This is exactly right and now I refuse to even look at an auction that has the

problem solved.

I received the item today. It was marked shipped on April 17th and got here this morning April.25th. I can't complain about how long it took.
It arrived Canada Post with no additional fees attached.
Yes, I gave $3.34 to P-B when maybe I would not have had to pay anything otherwise. In the end I still got a great deal, it arrived with in good time with no added fees or hassles and best of all I saved money because the total cost was cheaper then I would have paid elsewhere.
I would use gs again only if the total end cost saves me money I would have otherwise had to spend to buy an item locally. ]:)

Was going to purchase a used hearing aid from a US seller that reconditions them and he was using the GSP. Now there's no duties nor taxes on hearing aids as they are considered medical devices, so there should be no fees. However, this IS an extra fee, PB wanted $7.68 on top of the shipping charges which I didn't agree with. That would be putting $7.68 in their pocket for what, doing nothing?
I spoke to the seller and he refused to ship to me directly so I went to another seller that carried the same hearing aid and he agreed to ship directly as he wasn't enrolled in the GSP.
I bought the hearing aid he had, he shipped it and a week and a half later I got it with no extra charges.
