Question about returning a defective item?

Hello, I bought a satellite kit from this one seller and I need to know what process I have to take to return just one item in this kit? I bought the kit containing a satellite dish, an LNB, a coaxial cable and a receiver. It turned out after 2 weeks that this receiver was defective and never worked, and the remote control has to be within 12" from the receiver to receive the remote commands. I bought another receiver from eBay and found it working perfectly, but the first receiver that came with the kit could not pick up any signals from any of the satellites, and with the remote control problem, I'm absolutely sure it is defective. The satellite dish took a whole day of hard work to put all the pieces together and set up outdoors, so I only want to return the receiver in that kit for a refund based on the value of this receiver, not the whole kit if possible. How do I go about this, step by step?

Re: Question about returning a defective item?

Yes, so far I spoke to 3 different eBay representatives, one said I can wait 'til Thursday to open my case, another said I have to wait 'til Saturday to open my case, then the third representative today said I can open my case again Thursday which is today. Then she sent me to the Resolution Centre and another person handled my case to open my dispute. Just now I checked my email and I received a Courtesy refund from eBay for the full refund, the Resolution Centre said...

Final decision:

The case has been closed in your favour.

We're sorry you had a problem with your purchase. For more information about this case, please refer to the email we sent you.

I didn't expect this to happen while I'm ordering another dish at Amazon. So now I don't know if I still have to return the kit back to the Seller.  The order process at Amazon is preparing for shipment, I may end up with 2 dishes and 2 LNBs if I don't have to return the other one, what a complicated mess!

Re: Question about returning a defective item?

It's quite common for ebay to do that when a seller does not send a return label for a not as described item.

Well, that's good news for non-US sellers.

We can't supply a return label for customers who are not in the same country.

With the 'courtesy discount' at least we get to keep the money for the purchase and original shipping.

Unfortunately, this acts as an encouragement to sketchey overseas sellers who depended on the high cost of tracked international shipping to keep customers from Not As Described disputes.

Now they don't even have to use their 'lie to the dumb waiguo ren' template. Keep the money and the unhappy buyer can't leave feedback.

But....
I don't think eBay pays for the Courtesy Refund, do you? I'm sure they would just take it from the seller, like it or not. No? Or do they make exceptions in certain special cases.

Re: Question about returning a defective item?

Or is it added as a Defect as a result of it being a return left unresolved by the seller and too many so you're booted for good?

Re: Question about returning a defective item?

From the seller's perspective, that is.

As a buyer, what do you plan to do with the defective product? I'm curious. It would be somewhat unethical to sell now. And it doesn't work so you don't want to keep it.

Re: Question about returning a defective item?

I don't know what to do with it. If I can find a cheap technician somewhere who knows about these receivers, I might get it fixed. If it costs too much then I'll have to throw it out to the electronics garbage station in town. It looks like the case was closed, so I don't have to return the rest of the kit (satellite dish, coax cable and LNB) and I was able to stop the shipment of the other dish from Amazon but I will still receive the other LNB from Amazon because it was shipped.

I'm not sure how the Courtesy Refund works, but I gave the Seller a double negative because the other item, a satellite motor, was also scratched when I first received it, but I'm keeping it because it still works. That Seller was very unfriendly, and he deliberately gave me a PO Box address as a return address for return shipping of this parcel. The Resolution Centre worker noticed it right away, in 2 places the Seller gave that PO Box address that would not work! Double Negative was justified in my case!

Re: Question about returning a defective item?

And now the Seller is harassing me on the phone because I won the case and my negative feedbacks. I called eBay and they actually told me to send an email to the Seller and to tell him to contact Customer Support about the case and not to contact me in any way! These kinds of Sellers do not belong on eBay because of their attitudes towards Buyers, as if they forgot who their customers really are!
