I just sold an item that I had listed with free shipping. During the auction a bidder asked for a quote to send the item to Mexico via registered mail which I sent him.
He won the auction and I want to send him an invoice. But because I listed with free shipping it won't let me add this registered mail charge as shipping & handling.
What should I do?

You are trying to change the invoice...not the listing..correct?

I know that I've changed the shipping amount on an invoice. I don't think that I've made a change when the shipping was free but I'm surprised that it can't be done. Is the area grayed out? Is there not a line where you can add  an alternative shipping cost?  When you do change an invoice, make sure that you do click on recalculate on the bottom as it resets everything back to the original.

If you can't change the invoice, you can create an invoice on Paypal and quote the ebay item number on there.

It is always best to send a second invoice through PayPal for buyers requesting special shipping such as registered mail.

Why?

While it will cost you an extra $0.30 PayPal fee, you avoid eBay charging 10% (or whatever applicable rate) on the registration charge.

Registered mail is not offered on the drop-down list of shipping options. The shipping costs aren't greyed out on the but when I attempt to enter the shipping amount and click Recalculate, nothing happens.

The buyer also doesn't want to give me an email address for a PayPal invoice. Help!

"The buyer also doesn't want to give me an email address for a PayPal invoice"

???

It is the same address as the original purchase.

"when I attempt to enter the shipping amount and click Recalculate, nothing happens"

If you change the shipping amount on the invoice to reflect the additional registration cost, DO NOT hit recalculate. eBay will charge you FVF on the higher shipping amount.

Your buyer is being silly. If the buyer were to pay regularly then you would instantly have his email address from paypal anyways.

So maybe a way around this is to tell him to pay regularly but tell him that you will invoice him through paypal for the shipping using the email address that paypay instantly provides you.(the seller) anyways.

In my other post I meant to type do NOT click on recalculate. Sorry for the confusion.

You can use a generic term.....click on standard international shipping and put in the correct cost. You can check to see if the total is correct by clicking on preview invoice.

Or, as others have said, you should already have the paypal email assuming that their paypal email is the same as their ebay one. You will see it on the email from ebay telling you that the purchase was made.

Thanks to everyone for your great ideas and feedback. Mission accomplished, I'm happy to report. Adding the new shipping to the invoice (and NOT clicking Recalculate!) worked and the buyer has sent payment.

FYI though, Canada Post tells me you can't send anything larger than an envelope overseas by registered mail (my item was a DVD). So I had to send it as a Tracked Packet International which gives a tracking number at least. At least the cost was within the ballpark figure I quoted the buyer.

And your Mexico buyer was ok with paying $38.60 for the tracked packet?

Yes, he was. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, I guess.
