Seller's return policy

I purchased a watch last month and it has since had 2 problems with it - the chronograph dials don't reset and the calender dial loses a day every week. Kind of a big deal for an expensive watch.

The seller says they will take it back for review if I return it in the original packaging which is long gone, and if it hasn't been worn. Strange requirement for something that is supposed to be worn. It seems as if I should have placed it on a pedestal for a month before wearing just to see if it was working fine.

Can sellers make ridiculous return policies like this that are enforced by Ebay/Paypal? It seems like they are really giving me a disincentive to returning it to them.

Seller's return policy

By original packaging I meant the cardboard shipping box and paperwork, not the actual watch' box.
The seller is instructing me to send the watch to Briel, the maker of the watch, and not them. Why should this hassle and expense be on my shoulders?

The selller is responsible , not the maker. Assuming the watch was sold as fully working, open a Significantly not as Described claim with Paypal. Assuming you have not run out of time.

Seller's return conditions are meaningless, you will be required to return the item with some form of tracking, but all the stuff the selller asks for is unenforceable.

Looking at the item I think you got pretty much what you should have expected for the price.

You are correct on the seller's return conditions, I just followed your advice, thanks.

By the way, when you say I got what what I payed for, are you suggesting this company sells defective watches intentionally? I did think the price was pretty good, but now I am feeling a little foolish.

I don't think they sell defective watches deliberately, I just think the watches are really not very good and a defect is not all that surprising.

FYI Most warranties are not through sellers but manufacturer's . Big chain stores Will simply have you drop it off and they return it to manufacturer to be fixed so this may be the case here BUT  ...

if your returning for a refund and not to have it fixed that is a different story then the seller or store would handle it differently  ...

I worked for a big box store and most of the times the buyer has to drive to the store and drop it off and wait weeks for fix or even an update on what was wrong with the item and most manufacturers will do there best to make it your fault so you have to pay ...

Example I had a Girl with a defective phone .. NOT AT ALL HER FAULT ... But because she has almost invisible scratches on the LCD screen the company charged her X amount because they consider the minor scracthes a possible reason for the defect which it was not even close to her fault ...

SO in some case the selller or the store hhave just as much of a nightmare as the buyer with the manufacturers and fine print warranties

If it's been less than 45 days, you can get remedy via Ebay/PayPal protection, and even then you are stuck with return shipping cost,, Warranty is on the shoulder of manufacturer or importer, seller does not have obligation to help, chains do it for customer goodwill as it does not cost them anything. That's why manufacturers put fliers with stop sign saying "Do not return this to the store", because people return things for silly trivial reasons that can be resolved via phone call - "my printer does not print" - "did you power it up?" - "yes, of course, do you think I am some kind of neanthertal? " - "no sir, sorry about that. how did you connect it - via WiFi or USB?" - long pause - "I am not ... sure ... " click, disconnects.
