Setting up a Second User - questions

Instead of a store, I am thinking about setting up a second user. Here are the dumb questions...do I need a second email account for the new user (I think so) and a separate Paypal account - linked to the second email. Then I think for Paypal I will also need a second bank account.

Re: Setting up a Second User - questions

To set up a second eBay user account, you will need a different email address.

The same PayPal account can (should) be used for up to eight email addresses.

In your case I do NOT recommend opening a second account.  It will only add to confusion and prevent many buyers from combining purchases.

Look at the big picture.... there is more to it than just a few cents here and there.

Confusion to me or the buyer? I already use other auction sites and keep my inventory separate. I have less than 5% buyers looking to combine purchases.

Both.

I know... been there... done that... 😞

Re: Setting up a Second User - questions

Just sign up for a second ebay account with a new email and you are good to go.  Payments can go to the same email you use for paypal now or a different one to the same paypal account.  You can move listings by saving files in turbo lister, logging into the new id and loading them back.  You'll have paypal hold funds and some limits for awhile until the new id gets some feedback

Id say anyone would be out of their mind to not at least have a second id getting some fb to mitigate the risk of someone tanking their dsrs.  Granted the risk would be low for you with the fb you have and selling post cards.

A store subscription or paying listing fees on your low price items would add a large % to the fees you are paying.  Makes perfect sense to get another id and 100 more free listings

Yes and additionally.....

If you are a regular seller you need an id for buying, doing both on one id is not a good plan.

Listing promo's, especially if one id has a store, having a store id and a non store id increases the chances you get invites to the promo's or qualify for the ones that are for store owners or non-store owner but not both.

A tip, if you use two or more id at the same time on a regular basis use a different browser for each one (Chrome for one, FF for the 2nd, IE for the 3rd), this way you won't have to be changing log-ins every few minutes.

With the way the new fees work (if you have a Store) you might want another account so you don't end up using the "free" listings on items that have low insertion fees (Media) and then paying for more expensive Auction Listings (although the difference is now quite small).

And finally, if you have a second account and log in at least once a year eBay can claim they have an extra "active user", how else will they continue to grow the user numbers!

I wish I had thought of that a long time ago 🙂  I'm so used to IE that it never occurred to me to change browsers.  I'm always logging in and out.

Any strategies so that you don't look like a "newbie" on the second (new) user?

Any strategies so that you don't look like a "newbie" on the second (new) user?

I recall that when I set up my second account, at the bottom of my listing before I "Thank you for your interest & that type of thing", I added a comment something like (I can't remember precisely now):

I am a long-time eBay seller but have recently decided to set up a new account to separate "such and such items" from "such and such items" to enable buyers to more easily locate the items they are looking for.

I don't know if that made a difference but I found that there was no long start-up time.  I began selling quickly.  The only drawback, of course, is that PayPal will hold your funds until a certain dollar limit in sales is reached -- I believe it's $250.

Also, you may encounter selling limits because you're identified as a new seller; however, in my case, I just called PayPal and they increased the limit based on my selling performance on my primary account.

Good luck!

Yes!

If it's an ID you want to sell on be prepared for listing limits and payment holds.

eBay will start you with a very low limit, if you link to your existing account you may be able to get a bit higher limit right off. You can apply every 30 days to have the limit increased.

21 day payment holds go away after 25 transactions (I think it's 25) except for some higher risk categories.

If you want to have a 2nd item "on the shelf" you should start to use it at least until you get the limits raised and the holds off (for me the limits were my only concern).

If the TRS discount is important to you and especially if you have a low transaction volume having an alternate already TRS id could be handy should your current selling id get dsr bombed

Re: Setting up a Second User - questions

Still considering the options. If I start 2 more users ID's I can get 300 free listings per month - same as a basic store for free. I think also that with a store I will have to go through each item I have in Turbo and revise it with the store inventory. Yuk. I really just want to clear out some inventory as cheap as possible.

Re: Setting up a Second User - questions

Please be careful. Setting up multiple accounts to get around selling limits and such.. is against Ebay policy

Re: Setting up a Second User - questions

I should be ok with the policies. I sell postcards - I am thinking of setting up a second user for with only greeting postcards and larger lots - something I don't do on my current user. This way I can separate my inventory.

What is the typical selling limit on a new account?

Re: Setting up a Second User - questions

When I started this account, it was 10, then I clicked the request more link and it gave me 30. That's what I ended up with for the first month. Every month you can request more, but they say the maximum increase each month is 100%.

I'm at 400 now.

This account was started in December or January.

Re: Setting up a Second User - questions

One final question (I hope) If I set up a new user I know that I have to set up a new email account for that user - that is fine. If I use the same email for payments into my PayPal account as I use on my primary user, is PayPal still going to put a hold on my funds either 21 dyas or $250.00?

Re: Setting up a Second User - questions

The "21 day hold" is generally not based on your PayPal account but your new eBay selling account.

With my two selling accounts, I use the same email address for PayPal payments.

However, as stated earlier, in your specific case I do not recommend setting up a second account. I frankly see little to gain.

Re: Setting up a Second User - questions

That is a good question! When I set up this current account, I used the second email address for my payments, so I honestly don't know. But I think that you will still have holds on your funds, even though I can't be 100% sure.

By the way, to lift the hold, you have to meet 3 requirements, not just one:

- being a seller since 3 months

- having sold at least 25 items

- having sold at least $250

If 2 are met and the other one is not, your funds will still be on hold for 21 days. Also, if your global sales meet these requirements, but your US sales don't, you will still have your money hold for your US sales. I know, I've experienced it! International sales were not on hold, but my US sales were.

Re: Setting up a Second User - questions

For me, on this account, I had the 21 day hold until the month after 90 days had passed, then it was gone. Which I believe was the beginning of this month. And I'm using the same paypal account as my other long standing ebay account.

What was happening was that items that sold on my older account were available immediately and items sold on the new ebay account were being held, so both can happen within the same paypal account.

Glad that I started this thread before doing anything, the comments and suggestions have been great. After all the discussion, I think I am going to open a store!

If you do don't immediately sign up for the one year deal, let it run month to month for a couple of months just to make sure.

The penalty for closing or downgrading early on the one year deal is kind of brutal, good idea to pay the extra little bit until you are sure you will continue with it.
