Shipping big and heavy things. Suggestions?

Hi, my friend has asked me to list some heavy industrial engines and other large machinery parts he has stored in his warehouse.

How would you suggest I handle the shipping?

He said that in the past when he has auctioned (not ebay) this type of thing, shipping was up to the buyer to figure out. He suggests I just give the dimensions and weight and let the buyer figure out how to get it to them.

Does that work on ebay?

If not, what do you suggest for within Canada and to the U.S.

Thanks,
Shari

Leaving it up to the buyer is pretty standard for that type of thing. There are lots of options for trucking companies but to an extent they will depend on the specific destination.

Look in the Yellow Pages under Transport Services and call around for info. Some carriers can service all of Canada and/or the USA while other are regional. You want to try and avoid companies that will have to transfer to secondary carriers.

Under the new eBay rules requiring you to specify shipping you can indicate "Freight" which means you don't have to indicate cost or handling times.

In your listings it's probably best to simply state "buyer arranges shipping" but you can add that you will offer assistance if required.
