Just sold a fairly large package (1.5kg, 40x28x25cm) to a customer in Australia and am looking at USD$140 to ship via Xpresspost.
International Parcel Surface is the cheaper option at USD$88 but the delivery time given is 4 to 22 weeks! Plus no tracking option which on this item, I require.
Anyone got any other suggestions for shipping? Buyer is balking at the price. Thinking I'll have to cancel and offer second chance to runner up...

If it is the only item you sold, you do not even have Australia as a ship to country?

If you REQUIRE tracking there is no viable cheaper option.
Except maybe Tracked Packet (a service I've never used)............

This is a classic example of where Third Party Insurance (TPI) comes in handy if you want to insure your package.
You can use a less expensive method of shipping and use TPI @ $1.60/$100.
IMO it's better than losing a good sale.
I use InsurePost.

I did not have Australia as a country to ship to: have had problems in the past.
My mistake was not ensuring Australians could not also bid: will rectify that for the future.
Can't get the dimensions of the box down any further and have the right protection, so that's not an area I want to explore.
Haven't found anywhere that is cheaper for shipping though, so guess I'm stuck with CP.
Hoping that the buyer decides not to pay or asks to cancel: I have a second chance buyer lined up here in Canada so would be much simpler.

You have the right to choose the shipping service.
In this case you want a fast (air mail) and tracked service.
It will be expensive.
So what?
The shipping is paid by the buyer, who in this case bought without a quote on shipping. In effect, and eBay should back you on this, he agreed to the shipping fee you believe is fair.
Either he pays it or he doesn't.
If he doesn't, either you relist or use the Second Chance Offer.
If he does, you ship.
