Thank you Mr Harper.

The federal government sent me my monthly Old Age Security cheque and there was a huge increase in January 2013 from $544.98 to $546.07

Thank you Mr Harper for the extra $1.09 a month,

All seniors across Canada thank you for the extra $1.09

Every little bit heps!

Since we are old, we easily forget.  How much did you spend on those F35s ?  How does that compare to the extra $1.09 you sent me?

Thank you Mr Harper.

Have you considered the possibility you are wrong?

No, not based on the treaties. Have you read them?

Is it at all possible most treaties were signed with "Indians" who occupied lands but had no concept of "land ownership"?

True, they had no concept of land ownership other than their own personal division of tribal land……….which was Huge! Ownership as you and I know it is a European concept. When the Europeans came over here they had to abide by the world of those who live here…..not the other way around.  Hence, the treaties.

When it comes to Aboriginal rights and treaties, history tells us things are not as simple as you generally present them as your line is always the same: "the owned the lands".

Nowhere in any of these treaties signed by our forefathers and theirs does it state the Crown (now the government of Canada) would send money for health care, or education, or exempt them from paying any tax (GST, HST, PST income tax etc...) other than the only tax in existence at the time (land or property tax). All these other taxes did not exist at the time.

The treaties stated that the Europeans (in this case the Crown) was allowed to use the land and stores (Hudson Bay Company) and villages would be set up but all the money that was derived from the taking of resources would be split with the First Nations people. It also stated that the First Nations people were to be protected by the government on behalf of the Crown. The government of Canada is the representative of the Crown and as a result must provide for all aspects of the treaties.

As for ‘tax free’…..the Native people are not part of British laws including taxes established later after they took control. That is in the treaties. Look it up. Anything on a Reserve is tax exempt. Period.

Today we see many bands asking for "autonomy" yet they want our money to keep on flowing. Is this fair?

Why isn't it? Why can't they have self government on Reservation land and still stay in the treaty position that they are now in?

What don’t  wish to not understand? It is NOT your money. You pay taxes….the government takes those taxes and with it they pay the bills they have to pay from pens for a desk to military aircraft. One of the other bills is the money owed to the First Nations people. Unfortunately as I said previously….immigrants into Canada and people born here are never explained this in school or elsewhere. Blame your many governments for not being honest with you. You live in a huge horizontal apartment building called Canada. You pay rent to the one who runs and partially owns the building. That person has a silent partner and that person gets part of the rent. I’m sorry that wasn’t explained in your leases (immigration papers or birth certificate) but that’s the way it is. Now people don’t want to pay the silent owner in the partnership. Tough! There are legal agreements in place in perpetuity. If you don’t like it….what can I say but like anything else in life….move.

Time has come to sit down with all of them and iron out an agreement based on current elements of society.

In my personal opinion and that of any Native people I have spoken to the answer is…. NO! To sit down with the fox and discuss the chicken coop is self-defeating. There are treaties in place…..put on your big boy pants and deal with it. As far as I am concerned the First Nations people have taken enough lying, cheating, abuse and manipulation for too long as it is.

Sorry to correct you but .... The money taken away in the form of TAXES is MY MONEY.....AND used to pay social programs, etc.

Through history men created borders to protects there people and territories. And the land you live on is as much yours and mine. Indiens want to be taken seriously and its time we start seing the social injustice & discremination. This is what they want not necessarely money as you describ it (rent money).

Sorry to correct you but .....the money taken away in the form of taxes is your money....you are correct about that. Where you are incorrect is it not only pays for social programs and Harper's plane and Canadian festivals and military aircraft and of course social programs and countless other things.....but it also goes towards the First Nations people. I know that comes as a shock to you and others, like suddenly finding out you have brothers or sisters who are part of the 'estate', but that's just the way it is.

I know part of taxes goes in to First nation people. Not disputing. I am part Indian and its not a shock for me. Again what the Indian people want is to be taken seriouly and have housing ,social program not charity money....

No,"

I am truly sorry for you.  Unfortunately, you are stuck in one line of thinking with no way out. A mental cul-de-sac.

"...not based on the treaties. Have you read them?"

This reminds me of Johovah Witnesses knocking at the door twice a year.  They have read the Bible and their interpretation must be right. For example, a few words in their translated Bible seem to indicate that blood transfusion is against the will of God.  They cannot be wrong.

We live in a complex world and need an open mind and open heart to better understand the world around us. Wearing blinkers does not help understand the problems and challenges around us.

So because you did not answer, it must mean you haven't read them.....but you comment on them? Do you review movies without seeing them?

We live in a complex world and need an open mind and open heart to better understand the world around us.

Translation:.....''We want what you have and we have made the world complex....so we want to bring you into that complexity''.

The concept of "the Native people should sit down and negotiate" is typical for those in power and their supporters. However in power (aka a government) doesn't mean you have the power.....that's been proven through history and to the present day, over and over again.

The government knows that the First Nations people are sitting there with 3 aces and the government and their supporters want to try through negotations to coax those cards out of their hands. Well the First Nations people aren't the Natives of the past. You wanted them to get an education ....and they did.....along with history degrees and law degrees. Never give a slave a course in locksmithing. Why do you think the governments past and present want to do everything underhandedly?.......because they know they are wrong. Right now the Native movement is growing and gathering strength. If I were the government I wouldn't push it too far or the world will read the results on the newspaper front pages.

And thank you for your sorry but you are mistaken. I'm as happy as a lark. Happy as a rich man in a cold cabin and I just found a room full of stamp books and a lighter.

Oh......if you need some help with those Johovah Witnesses do what I did. Hang up a couple of pentagrams in the driveway.....they won't even get out of the car. Works every time.

"Translation:.....''We want what you have..."

For as long as I can remember you keep making assumptions based on your own criteria (what you would do), not on facts or knowledge.

Why?

Millions of words are written.  Why make assumption and pass judgement on those that are not written?  Because in your opinion that is what it means?

You make it impossible to have intelligent discussions as long as you keep assuming and stating what someone else thinks or does.

Sticking to the facts would be so much easier.

Thank you Mr Harper.

It was a simple question.........'have you read them'? (the treaties)

The answer is equally simple.....yes....or....no.

In two posts you have not answered that simple question because you know and I know you haven't read them. I have read them, dozens of them (well copies of them from archives). You talk about 'assumption"....but yet you 'presume' to feel you can talk about something without knowing the facts. It is no wonder that the statue of lady justice wears a blindfold.

Ask me about stamps and I will tell you I know little about them. Have I read countless books about stamps? No. That.........is an honest reply and I would not get into a discussion about something I did not understand.

As for discussions, well it is best to have them with those who understand the subject in all it's minute details. Those who cannot deal with facts, or wish to avoid them, end up voicing merely opinions and where do they come from.......well the media (as if that is trustworthy depending on what one reads).....what people are taught (and most often what they are taught is the blind leading the blind)....history books (which are written by the victors and have been proven many times to be nothing but pure propoganda)......or from their own deepset personal feelings which may be prejudiced, bigotted, even racist.

Intelligent discussion? Well first one must apply the definition of intelligence:  ... "The ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills." And what is knowledge?:  " What is known in a particular field or in total; facts and information."

Have a nice day.

Nowhere could I find that the taxpayer is responsible for supplying the Indians with electricity, television, internet, computers, skating rinks,  escalades, and running water.

Several mentioned giving each resident the sum of $3.00 per year  .

from the Canadian Federation of Students website.

"The federal government provides funding for Status Indians (as defined by the Indian Act) through the Post-Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP). Funding for the PSSSP is distributed by band councils under their own eligibility criteria. For example, some bands fund more students at a portion of the total cost of their education, whereas other band councils give a grant covering all of a student’s expenses."
