I thought about this yesterday when I was looking for Lisa. I was getting impatient wondering if anyone had seen her. I didn't want to post in another thread because it may have been mised, so I had to email her instead. (Which was no problem by the way)

Then I thought...maybe we could have a thread where we could come and ask about someone or just to say something that just doesn't pertain to anything in particular. It's always a bit weird going 'off subject' in someone else's thread.

So, this thread will be for EVERYone and it could be about ANYthing. You don't ever have to use it, but if you need to, great. Doesn't mean you can't make your own thread, it just mimics the ski chalet after a day of skiing. Say what you want - ask what you want - show your pictures - comment on the dot com threads (yuk yuk) A veritable freebie. I hope it will be useful but if it's not - then...$screw you guys - I'm going home! 🙂

OK? enough is enough. Its a friggin milestone that my wife hit a little over 2 years ago that I had the opportunity to tease her about, even though we can get deals at some hotels. Now I can no longer tease.

I used to perform quite a bit in my "YOUNGER" days, everything from jazz to blues to rock on about a dozen different instruments.

I was quite happy when my son took up trumpet (one of my main instruments) and went on to National competitions with his school bands winning gold in several competitions.

My daughter has also taken up trumpet and jumped from grade 9 to grade 10 music after 2-years of playing in middle school and is first chair (lead) trumpet in the senior grade 12 band and soloist. She also tours local schools playing on Remembrance Day (just like her old man used to do).

This year they may jump her up to grade 12 music, finishing 2-years ahead of schedule.

Because of my past love of music and of my current business interest selling musical instruments on eBay, our house is a real feast for sore eyes for musicians.

I just moved everything into an upstairs bedroom to become our music room and recording studio. Now to get to work to get everything set up.

Between my personal musical instruments, all the high end video and audio recording junk and all my son's DJ equipment, we have enough stuff to fill a small warehouse

I dont keep anything that I sell at my house.

Hope your son has a speedy recovery.

I don't know whether to feel old or young these days.

My oldest son is about to turn 21 in September and my youngest just turned 4. My second marriage led to 2 boys born a year apart when my oldest son was 16. My family told me I was crazy, that I could see the light at the end of the tunnel and backtracked! Some days I agree, LOL.

Of course I was only a baby when I had my first son. My parents sold me into marriage at the tender age of 12. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

Malcom, as far as enjoying freedom from the corporate world, I'm loving it! I envy you your consulting work. When I finished my BBA in the early 90's I really wanted to go into consulting. Even had offers from a few of the top firms. Unfortunately, being a single parent at the time, the requirement that I spend up to 4 nights a week in a different city just wasn't feasible.

Tell me about it.

I have to go to Sudbury for about 3days in August.

I leave for Toronto for about 2-weeks around September 6th, have a one day trial in Hamilton September 17th and then right up to Sudbury for at least 6 weeks in another trial.

I am hoping to get home for at least 2 weekends in October/November but with my day finishing up in Sudbury at the Court around 4:30pm Fridays and having to prepare Sunday afternoons in Sudbury for the next week, it doesnt allow time for the almost 12 hour return trip driving.

That's not the part you envy is it?

I know what you mean though. I had a call with a Bay Street lawyer this morning concerning entering one of our Expert Reports as evidence into court. It feels great dealing in multi million dollar transactions with some of the great legal and financial minds of Canada and being challenged by them.

After the call I felt like a million bucks for my contribution. Sure as heck feels better than the satisfaction I get from my eBay business.

I get totally pumped up for these things and am always on top. One side of me totally loves the big corporate world and being involved in it, the other side says that I should have joined a commune or surfed.

I guess I will never be totally satisfied however I am managing to sort of do both right now.

Monique,
Just to show you that I am not BSing, here is an email I got a couple of minutes ago after I squashed the earlier decision of using the Expert's report in trial:

"Hi Malcolm: You were right on. XXX readily agreed that it would be better not to release the report. I also felt, as you did, that he seemed relieved. He knows that I am going to use it for preparation of my cross examination.
Get out on your boat!!"

That Monique, is what I love about the consulting part and the big corporate world, and then I get brought back to reality with emails asking how many strings my 5-string banjo has (Jeeeesh)

Malcolm,

For part of my time with CTC I was managing accounts with large American vendors. As part of my job description, I was required to impose some very large fines for non-performance.

One company, who shall remain nameless, had such an objection to a large fine imposed upon them that they sent up the President, VP of Distribution and assorted hangers on in the company jet for a meeting with myself and everyone above me, right up to the Senior VP of Marketing. They made the erroneous assumption that the "Old Boys Club" would put this little lady in her proper place.

Well, I had my ducks so perfectly in a row during this meeting that by the end of it the President of the nameless company was shooting daggers across the table at me. I never knew prior to that the meaning of "If looks could kill". I don't think he could decide whether he should hunt me down in the parking lot or attempt to hire me.

Suffice it to say the fine stood and I walked out of the meeting having gained a new respect from all in attendance (and a promotion shortly thereafter!)

I loved that feeling and miss it on many days when I have to deal with nothing but children, at home and on eBay! Maybe I'll be back at it someday.

There you go, thats what I am talking about. Once its in your blood, you can never get rid of it.

As much as I like the relaxing at home type of lifestyle, I miss the jet setting all over the world, going into dangerous countries, negotiating with clients and senior foreign government people.

I miss being on edge, working hard and partying hard. I at least get back into it for 4 to 9 months per year but I wonder when even that will stop.

I am always being invited to head up a new company, either a high tech venture or an engineered product. Most of those positions come with the responsibility to get money for the company as well (funding).

I no longer have an interest in getting into a company at that stage. I would probably get back into the rat race if an established company made the invitation with a great package but I am certainly not knocking on any doors at this time.

Malcolm, you and I are so alike! My daughter plays the flute and she is very good at it. My son is a dj with all the turntables and loot that goes with it. In fact, we are selling all his equipment on my site today so he can buy all new stuff. It sure sells well!

And will the fishing that Jackie and I have in common, why, we are practically triplets!

I know of a DJ in BC looking for equipment. I will try to find his email addy and give him a heads up to look at your site.

He was getting out of DJing last year and I bought an almost new $300 intelligent light for around $65 through eBay and then a few months later, he decided that he wanted to get back into it again.

He and I corresponded for a few months as I was giving him business advice for starting up a business. I convinced him that DJ'bg would provide him some good money and would not interfere with anything he started that would operate during the day.

Why not make $300-$500 every Saturday night for 4 hours work while trying to finance and start off another venture?

Does you son need any Bubble Juice? I bought out a complete store that was going bankrupt last year of their juice and I have about 75 gallons. It is real high quality as my son uses it and swears by it.

I guess my son's definition of dj-ing is a bit vague. He mostly scratches amd mixes, runs around his bedroom and pretends he lives in a ghetto in Chicago.

He does dj at a local skate park but there is no light show or bubbles. These skaters are like rats in the sewer.

WOw, big difference between what my son was doing.

His last gig at a high school, he had so much equipment there with a sound and light technician that they blew the school's lights about 4 times that night.

He had a pyro certified technician with him who operated the intelligent lighting. While he rented much of the equipment, he brought close to $20,000 in lighting and computer equipment alone. The previous DJ who played there was Ottawa's #1 DJ, had 2 radio shows etc and my son wanted to blow the socks off him.

He has enough equipment on his own to do a big show but these are are BIG shows

No no no, the stuff my son is into is definitely small time - but he has big dreams. His gig is more on the tech side of mixing - using the mixer as a musical instrument.

He also thinks he is black, which is funny for a nice Jewish boy from mid town Toronto.

Thats hilarious, even Michael Jackson doesnt believe that he is black.

My son spins vinyl and has the pro dual CD player as well but as I tell that guy in BC and my son is aware, you can make nothing and have no $$ to spend on new equipment playing only what you want or you can play what people want to hear to people who are willing to pay.

My son, while mixing most styles for dances, prefers Dance and House as he got into spinning 8 years ago after finding one of my turntables and my 500 album collection.

And equipment? Just what he owns wouldnt fit into a van let alone what he rents. We probably have over 30 different light effects alone.

One thing is for sure, we have had some great house parties. You couldnt believe that you were in a house basement when he used to fire up his equipment when we would have about 20-30 people over for a party.

After a month, this post had fallen off the first page... Just thought I would bring it back to the front, just in case some wishes to post for a lark....

PS - Weather is crappy here today, so I seem to have some time for these mindless little chores.

Hi Guys, long time no see. I was just puttering around on my laptop and decided to pop in here to say hello and see how you are all doing.

I am ashamed to say that I haven't been in here in so long, because someone told me that this board had been pulled. I should have verified it for myself but, I didn't and that's that.

So, until yesterday when Louise made a comment on the dot com board about translating for folks on THIS board, I thought it was gone.

How is everyone, anyway? Deb, Glenda, Don, Bill, Anne.....etc., I hope you are all well and kicking arse on ebay. How are everyone's sales? I know it's been so slow for me and I guess for Karen too, as we both sell jewlery, but maybe movies and postcards are doing well??

Anyway, slowly getting ready for Christmas, which means I go into the locker and grab the 2' pre-decorated tree and shove it on a table in the living room. Now, I am exhausted and can't get my shopping done. Guess I'll have to pass until next year, right??

j/k guys. Lemme know how you're all doing!!!

Welcome home Jackie ... don't be such a stranger! Haven't heard anything from Bill for ages, and Don hasn't been around since early fall. I had hope to meet Don personally in Sept. but he and his family fell victim to a bug just about that time so that idea fell through. Hopefully, in the spring when we visit Edmonton again.

Christmas???? It's barely half way through November!! My tree is about 10" tall, also pre-decorated, and fits (sometimes) on top of the TV. I try to tell the family that I don't want anything that won't fit under the tree (can you spell jewellery?) but this year I just might change that - golf stuff is good too and my glove is looking a tad the worse for wear. (No, Jeff - the winter gloves are still in great shape - they don't get a lot of wear here on the West coast.)

Sales?? What are those??? Postcards are selling just enough to keep me at PS status but I have to list more every week to keep it up. And of course, this board is the only reason I care about PS status -- I'd miss everyone here!

Cripies, its the original PS Group back in the corner just like old times.

Jackie, was that FTD that said the Cdn Board is dead? Its as dead as he was, the lying SOB, only he looks it, we dont.

Why would the Cdn Board get pulled? There are no vulgarities here. No name calling. Only helpful people assisting others to do well in their eBay sales.

Oh, thats why! So we should have some more swearing and stuff like that eh? and when someone needs help we should jump all over him and comment on his listings and how he is violiating eBay rules. Then we will be assured of always having a Canadian Board.

My sales are going ok. The problem is the dollar and I am having to sell some items that are not 100% up to my standards as no one wants to pay for quality items.

It seems that this time last year my average selling price was around $250 USD per item (with a 30% dollar) and now it is closer to $80 USD (with an 18% dollar).

I wouldnt mind it if I was able to double or triple my volume of sales but that hasnt happened yet. The good thing is I have alot of inventory available with items that are ideal for Christmas presents under $100 USD so hopefully I will see the volume pick up in another week.

No Malcolm, they said it was pulled due to lack of use. I can't even remember who said it. Oh well, I'm glad it's not true.

Glenda, sorry to hear that you missed Don. Maybe next time. Love the sound of YOUR tree. I'm jealous. I thought mine was starting to look a little too big. Hehehehe....are we lazy, or weird, or lacking in enthusiasm....or what?

Let's just all keep praying for our dollar to start sagging again like the old lady that she is. I can't take this lousy exchange too much longer 🙂 There's just nothing in it for me 😉

Hugs,

Jackie...

Hi Ann,

Nice to see you too. No, haven't moved yet. Things change every moment it seems, but that's ok. Plenty of time for a future, right???

Sales are indeed pitiful 😞
