I just had a trying experience with 2 E bay sellers, it is not their fault but this new darn Import Charge to Canadians is a farce..If the Americans need money badly just put a gun to my face and take it not bleed the main source of the E Bay sellers income. As I am a member since Jan-7-08 I have bought a lot of different items and I may be forced to go elsewhere to buy. And from what I have read in the discussion board a lot more Canadians are doing the same...DON'T E BAY CARE ABOUT IT'S MEMBERS???????..The US postal service is to darn high to send items here to Canada??? What happened to that FREE TRADE WE HAD ( OR DID WE ??????? ) Yeah Right
You buy an item from E.Bay for $25.00 US and the shipping charges are sometimes double the price and now this so called IMPORT CHARGE NOW AH YOU THINK THAT CANADIANS ARE STUPID WERE NOT WE KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE US ECONOMY...........WE HERE IT EVERY DAY,,,WHY SHOULD WE CANADIANS AND LOYAL E BAY MEMBERS PAY FOR YOUR DEBT YOU DID IT NOT US,
GO BACK TO THE WAY THINGS WERE WE ALL WERE HAPPY THEN AND E.BAY SELLERS DID VERY WELL... Thank You A LOYAL E.BAY BUYER

I haven't bought any items for a while and today I'm browsing on ebay.ca and run into this auction:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Shirley-Temple-Composition-Doll-27-Inches-1930s-Vintage-Rare-Dress-/251286920539?pt=US_Dolls_Bears_Toys&hash=item3a81de1d5b
The auction says this is the first time using the eBay Global shipping service and it has a shipping price of U.S. $40.36 International priority and $75.91 import charges, which is estimated and based on the current bid.
So does this mean, that at the current bid, the total shipping, etc. to me is now over $115.00 and that keeps going up as the bids do? How can the seller have an both an "International " shipping price quoted to me and then another price?. What am I paying if I were to bid?
Remember me, Les? Hi!
I'm in BC and like Manitoba, my province has 12% PST and GST but I'm seeing import charges of $49.74. This is pretty strange from where I'm sitting.
I do find it interesting how you're referring to a "total shipping charge," though. If the item were being sent through the post office, would you refer to the item price plus PST, GST and Canada Post's ten buck processing charge as "the total shipping charge" too?
Is the import charge on the doll any different if you view the listing on the .com site instead of eBay.ca? Just curious.

Sorry, of course I meant "the shipping charge plus the PST, GST, etc." and not the item charge.

I get $48.35 on .com, 79.64 on .ca to ON
Thats a problem

Oops, just realized that I had an Alberta postal code entered, so the GSP calculator would just be factoring in the GST as Alberta has no PST.
So on the .com site the import charges to me in BC and to you in MB would be $44.88. On the .ca site import charges to both provinces would be that $76 figure you're quoting.
Bizarre.

Remember me, Les? Hi!
Yes. :^O
When I bid I take in the "possible" total amount. That includes the sellers shipping cost and any charges I may have to pay to pick the parcel up at the post office. I can calculate that. There's the Canada post handling charge and the taxes. Sometimes they charge me and sometimes they don't.
Using this GSP program I'm not sure what I'll be paying. It looks like I'll be paying for shipping twice, taxes, etc, plus the Pitney handling fee, etc.
Why would someone bid without knowing what they're paying and for what?
I bought a doll the exact same size and weight and it was shipped to me for $40. The price quoted in the "International priority shipping " in the auction. That extra $75.00 is out of line even if I had to pay the taxes and handling fee. Does the seller knows how much I'm being quoted on ebay.ca?

The $40 is the total shipping for the seller to send to the the fulfillment center and them to send it to you
Hi Toby. The $40. is the International priority shipping cost directly to me. To send to a U.S. address would be a lot less. Generally the cost to ship a doll this size and weight is between 40-50 ( priority International ) depending on the seller.

That's a huge problem. There have been a couple posts here and/or in the answer center from buyers who said that the actual import charges that paid were twice as much as what the listing said....that didn't make sense to me but obviously it is possible.

I shop on .ca, assuming that anything on there is available to me. Perhaps if they're shopping on .com they see different import charges. This would be a problem if the charges on .com are half as much as the actual bill.
In any case, I don't plan on bidding on any items where the seller uses GSP. The quoted import charges on .ca are too high.

It does sound as though Pitney Bowes is simultaneously sharpening and breaking its pencil when it comes to import charges. What I don't get, though, is how you see the two shipping charges that you mentioned a few posts back.

Yes, the $40 is to you but what Toby meant is that the $40 is made up of two parts. The first part is the cost for the seller to send it from their location to the shipping center in Kentucky and the second part is what PB charges from Kentucky to Canada. We only see it as one total in the listing but the first portion gets paid to the seller and the second part gets paid to PB.

Actually, the seller will not see what your total shipping charge is or what the import charge is unless they change their shipping location to your location. So unless they are curious and do some research or unless a buyer tells them..they have no clue as to what we are paying because all they receive is the domestic portion of the shipping amount.. But yes, it does look as if the totals would be different if they looked on .com versus on .ca. But it shouldn't be that way.

Change your shipping location on .com and on .ca to a MB postal code..R1A2L1 is Selkirk MB
When you look at that listing, you'll see a different amount on each site. You were probably looking on .com and dis was looking on .ca. For some reason the totals are different on each site.
For example in AB, the import charges for that item on com are $20.65 and on .ca they are $49.74.

Oops..I'm sorry marnotom...I should have read back again before I replied and I would have realized that you already knew that .ca and .com were showing different amounts. I misunderstood your comment.

Thanks for looking into this everyone. I think there's something wrong with this program.
So how does a seller opt out of it?

I think there's something wrong with this program.
Now there's an understatement.
It seems the more we learn about it, the worse it is.
Thanks for bringing the discrepancy in charges up.

One thing that bothers me, the supposed import fees, they are overstated and I'm sure that money Customs never see the color! Personally I think this is another way to increase the selling price, ebay APPROVES this practice! I No longer buy anything that charges of this kind.
06-11-2013 07:44 AM
"I'm sure that money Customs never see the color!"
Why so much cynicism?
There is no reason to believe Pitney Bowes, a public company with a capitalization of US$ 3,000,000,000 would cheat the Canadian federal government.
Do you feel the same way with every supplier of goods and services charging you HST/GST/PST?
Do you really think your telephone company, your utilities provider, your corner store, your favourite merchants at the mall, your newspaper carrier, etc... take the tax from you and do not remit it as they should?

As things stand right now, the GSP seems to be like herpes. Once a seller's got into it, there doesn't seem to be a way to completely get rid of it. All they can do is manage it from their listings or from their seller preferences.
In other words, they can "toggle" the option, but they can't completely "opt out".
06-11-2013 11:31 AM
I tried to find some other examples of the import charges being different on each site but haven't seen any more. Has anyone else noticed this on other listings?
06-11-2013 11:32 AM
LOL Good analogy marnotom!
