Ottawa police are warning the public about a gang of turkeys in the west Ottawa community of Barrhaven...and to be clear, real turkeys...the bird...
In the past 40 days, Ottawa Police have had more than 20 turkey calls. While they are not actually running afowl of the law, the police are frustrated with them as they are causing some traffic disruptions. Apparently it's not just chickens who have to cross the road.
They are frequently spotted along Strandherd Road and Longfields Drive. Usually four are seen together. You are being asked NOT to feed them, or call police unless there is a pressing threat to safety.
Turkeys are fierce if provoked. And, if you had any ideas about chasing down Christmas dinner....it is illegal to hunt or shoot a turkey. It would be a 2 thousand dollar fine. and that's not chicken feed.

"it is illegal to hunt or shoot a turkey."
Hogwash, there are two seasons to hunt for them and it's by shooting. If they had said hen turkey it would be correct. Poor Tom! Males always take it on the chin.

The report is missing a few words.
The City of Ottawa's Discharge of Firearms by-law 2002-344 makes it illegal to use firearms in certain areas of the city that include Barrhaven.
The definition of "firearm" in the by-law includes long bows and crossbows.
It is therefore illegal to hunt these particular turkeys as long as they remain in Barrhaven.
