I have been shopping on ebay for many years. I generally try to buy from ebayers that live in Canada as I wish to support them. However, when I buy an item I am charged the US dollar amount (even though the seller lives in Canada) then my credit card company charges me for the US dollar conversion. This is wrong. If we are Canadian and buying in Canada, the charge should be in Canadian funds not US funds. I feel like I'm being ripped off. Also I've noticed low cost items (eg: item cost $5.00 then $20.00+ shipping), doesn't this seem a little wonky. I was looking at buying a manual and this was the charge. WT......? Anyway just wanted to say.

I know, it seems unfair when Canadians have to pay a foreign exchange conversion when purchasing from other Canadians.
However, you have to look at it from the Canadian seller's perspective.
Most items offered on eBay are purchased by Americans or buyers from overseas dealing in US$. It is therefore a logical step for most Canadian sellers to list in US$. For many years eBay has advised sellers that listing in US$ gives a better chance to complete a transaction.
Once an item is listed in US$, the system automatically charges the buyer in US$ (regardless of buyer's country) and payment is transmitted by PayPal from buyer to seller in US$.
On the other hand, many Canadian sellers will offer Canadian buyers to settle the transaction in equivalent Cdn$. Check the listing to see if the seller offers such option and/or ask the seller.
As far as shipping charge, you were aware of the charge before buying. Whether the price was $25 with free shipping or $5 with $20 shipping or $10 with $15 shipping does not really matter, does it? You made the purchasing decision on the basis of $25 including shipping.

I had my items listed in CDN$ originally and I got almost no sales. As soon as I listed in USD$ I started getting sales. So far majority of my sales are from the US.

It isn't a listed option. If a seller wants to offer it, they would probably put it in their description field.

"Any idea where I can find this option pierrelebel? "
It is not something offered by eBay or PayPal.
A Canadian seller would have to note it in the listing (many do) and, following a purchase in US$, send the buyer a manual PayPal invoice in Cdn$ equivalent. An eBay invoice cannot be used since the currency cannot be changed.
Upon receipt of PayPal payment in Cdn$, the seller would have to manually adjust the transaction to reflect the fact payment has been received.

You could also contact your Canadian seller and ask them if after the sale you could pay in the equivalent Cdn $. Just be polite, don't bash Ebay or Paypal, as you may come off as a nutter : )

And keep in mind that while the US dollar is currently higher than the Canadian dollar, a couple of years ago it was lower.
I try to think of the currencies as bucks and loonies, rather than the confusing 'dollars'.

The US Dollar is the currency of commerce around the world.

Absolutely agree with you jackieskyaura. There is a lot of overcharging going on all over ebay. I used to buy from the USA but haven't in quite some time as most sellers overcharge by as much as 10x the actual cost and then the Import Charges on top of that. I buy coins and other things, but mostly coins. One seller from the US, to ship one coin to Canada was charging $13.00 postage and another $8.00 or so Import Charges...I am also a seller and the cost to ship one coin to the US is a couple of bucks. I don't even look at things from the US now, let alone think of buying anything...that just is not going to happen!!! Now really, ebay needs to take control of this mess that they have created. I started selling on ebay in 2003 and ever since it has been going down hill. You would think with the economy as bad as it is that sellers would want to make the shipping part of the process as easy as possibly for the buyer, but NOOOOO, they try and rip people off with their overcharging for the postage costs. I keep my postage rates at actual cost or less right down to free postage on a lot of items and when buyers buy a certain amount from me than I pay the postage. I want to sell my items and I want my buyers to always get a good deal and to be 100% happy with their purchase!!! I see buyers who bid on items where the postage is so high that to get their money back should they want to resell it is literally impossible regardless of how good the economy might get. Ebay needs to take hold of the situation and straighten it out otherwise they'll just keep sinking into the hole they've created.......

Though I do not believe the seller from the USA is at fault for those shipping overcharges, its really Ebay and Pitney Bowes with their Global Shipping Program. I wont say more about it, there's plenty of anti-GSP threads out there.

"I do not believe the seller from the USA is at fault"
Actually, often the seller is at fault: he should not have listed low priced items using GSP.

Could it be that some do not know that GSP is added to their listing? When it first came into effect I was in conversation with someone who did not know it was on her listing.

"Could it be that some do not know that GSP is added to their listing?"
That could have been true a year ago or even earlier this year.
However, I suspect sellers, in most instances, do know by now what they are doing.
On the other hand, I believe eBay is largely to blame for the lack of education: eBay has never taken the time to properly advise American sellers when it was appropriate and when it was not appropriate to use GSP.
While sellers now have the tools to exempt specific countries - such as Canada - from GSP, eBay has not done enough to adequately monitor sellers using the program.
eBay should have in place tools preventing American sellers from using GSP when not appropriate - low value items easily sent by mail for example.
