For a year now I have reported on the subject of UPS NOT making any money in Canada from their courier business. They make their money (and lots of it) from their brokerage end of the business.
They provide delivery in Canada as a service to their US customers. The other end (picking up our items) was only to try to be somewhat of a cost recovery for their dropping off items however I guess in the end, the costs outweighed the benefits.
Fedex is the other company that eyes should be kept on as it does not have the infrastructure to service its Canadian clients. As a result, it uses 3rd party, small independant local delivery companies to complete the majority of their 'rural' deliveries. Rural is just about everthing outside of a city having a population of over 400,000.
Lets face it folks, we live in a big country with a relatively small population and the cost to service this country as a courier, airline, trucking company, train or whatever is prohibitive unles you are partially subsidized by Federal and/or Provincial governments.
It would be interesting to hear from other UPS customers if they have received their notice or is this something that will be done on the anniversary date of one's contract with them?.
