VANISHING UPC: anyone else having their UPC wiped from the listing as soon as it's input?

So this is an oddity. Tonight, I'm listings things and as soon as I add my UPC to the listing, it vanishes and then I get an ebay error telling me I can't list it until I have a UPC. Which I add and then it vanishes. Rinse and repeat. So far it's happened on one listing and I'll soon see if it spreads. 

Added and then it auto-saves.....

And then it disappears....

So I created my own new Item Specific with a UPC and told ebay that Does Not Apply is the appropriate choice in their UPC field (since it was being continually rejected anyway) and listed it.

I get it: the UPC was incorrect. There was one too many digits in it. So that was my mistake, clearly, but didn't we used to see an actual error message from ebay saying the UPC was faulty if we tried to submit it and the UPC was incorrect? It said something like 'This UPC is invalid' in red. If I recall.

If I try to list with an incorrect UPC I get messages but none that say This UPC is invalid. I can't remember what they say, but not what one would expect. Your post scared 10 years off me, I've almost finished adding UPCs to about 700 items, 200 to go still. Should be done by January. Got quite a lot that will need "made up" UPCs, hope eBay tells us how to get them soon.

Sorry, I didn't mean to give you a fright!

This was my own dumb doing.

The UPC I tried to supply was wrong, plain and simple. But it didn't tell me that, it just wiped the field clean with no explanation whatsoever.

I was starting to feel like that cartoon character who leaves a pie on the window sill that vanishes each time they turn around.

That being said, ebay did drop some of my UPCs after I added them all way back in June 2015 so what I decided to do after that was add that UPC information to the listing text itself so that it would be handy to find to re-add if it happened again.
