I want to use a inexpensive / free accounting software that can track inventory, sales, purchases and Taxes of course (GST and PST) so preferably a Canadian oriented software or any other software that is configurable to handle 2 taxes.

Is anyone using any that is not hard on the pocket ?

Many choices.

If you have the knowhow, you can set up your own schedules using MS-Excel.

If you are looking for a pre-packaged software, made for small Canadian businesses, Simply Accounting (Basic) will do the job for you.

If you need to handle multiple currencies, Simply Accounting Pro will do the job.

simply accounting pro is $149.99. What kills is monthly fees. do you know if that is one time purchase price? I have been using Excel and its getting too much work to track everything.

Simply accounting:

There are no monthly fees unless you subscribe to the payroll tax updates.

Basic version we got for 50 bucks at Staples (some sort of promo) and the "Pro" version gives you a few more features.

What is so difficult with spreadsheets?

Don't forget you can span your data across several tables and use VLOOKUP macro to use data from one sheet in another.

You need to do a little reading, but that does not hurt if you are on the budget. Accounting software is overrated, people think they just buy it and it will do everything for them. Trust me, it don't. You buy it and going to be so lost, you may pretty well invest the time to understand financial records and taxes rather than understand one program that changes every year.

Oh yes, I forgot ... OpenOffice is free. Kind of sluggish to start, look from last century but once it starts it's very similar to Excel. I had Excel trial coming with new laptop and could not stand that ribbon thingy.

We use QB Premium with the warehousing module option and like it very much allows for easy tracking of multiple currencies and warehouses.

We recently opened a retail outlet and adding the inventory and tracking sales was a breeze.
