I know someone who worked at the place, they said it was VERY VERY rare to have anyone actually get the free steak (4 1/2 lbs of bleeding beef....Yikes!).
Barbarians is the classic steak joint but it's a little formal and stuffy for my liking (jacket/tie required). Ruth Chris does have a good rep.
Here's one I went to years ago that was very good, not right downtown but easy to get to on the subway.

The downside of these big steaks is that they are normally a lower quality of meat and can be as tough as a boot.
BTW, I am looking for a spot where I can get in wearing shorts. Thanks for your help.

Between Hy's and Ruth's, I'd choose Ruth's. They are upscale though so it depends on the mood you're in and what you're willing to pay. I believe that you need a shirt and jacket for Hy's and I don't think they allow jeans at Ruth's. If you don't have what they require they have the generic ugly jacket & tie ready for you. :^O
I like the Keg and we go there frequently but it is the poor man's/cheaper version of the upscale steakhouses. They're not howdown all you can eat Texas Roadhouses but they're not as formal as places like Hy's or Ruth's.
Of the different Keg's we've been to we've noticed a huge variance in the quality of the cook. We prefer the Keg Mansion. They seem to know what they're doing at that one, the others are hit and miss. Some are ok and some are just plain gross! None are superb by any stretch of the imagination. Served me rotten meat at the Square One location. BLECH! It stunk to high heaven and I have no idea how the fool didn't notice it. Never been back there since and that was years ago. Free meal for the two of us. Gee thanks but big deal, I was hungry and wanted to eat.

You'll love the personalized, attentive, formal service. It's a wonderful experience. If you ever get the opportunity to go to one in the States, do it too.
Have a great time and enjoy yourself!! :-D
