Let sleeping dogs lie...

Some sellers have contacted buyers about the leaving of feedback.

and in retribution  the buyer leaves a negative feedback.....

with the wording

See... I left feedback...

Feedback is voluntary and it seems that less people leave feedback now than in the past. I suggest that you never contact a customer to see if they are happy or if they received their item. If they have a problem, they will contact you.

As the others have said, do not chase feedback.  You'll be sorry if you do, because you might not get the FB you're hoping for.

The best way to encourage FB is to make a happy customer during the transaction, with a good price, fast and reasonable shipping, and pleasant, helpful communication, but don't mention anything about FB in your communications with the buyer, either before or afterward.

One thing you can do is leave FB for a buyer either immediately after they've paid, or (what I tend to do) as soon as you expect the item is in the buyer's hands -- often seeing their own FB number go up by one is enough to prompt them to reciprocate.

It seems fewer and fewer buyers are leaving FB these days.  Speak to anyone who has been selling here for a few years and they'll probably agree.  I used to get around 95% FB, now I'm lucky to get 60%.  There are different theories as to why.  My own theory is that more mobile purchasing means buyers just don't bother to return to eBay to follow up.

In any event, I wouldn't be surprised to see eBay throw out the FB system in favour of some other form of customer input (reviews perhaps?).  We may find out soon in the Spring Seller Update.
