The ebay.com ID I established in 1996 (when there was no ebay.ca) has mysteriously changed to an ebay.ca ID as well

"...has mysteriously changed to an ebay.ca ID ..."
Could you please explain exactly what you mean.
I am also a eBay.com registered seller (legacy user) registered in the last century (1998)..
I do not see any mysterious change anywhere. What do you see... specifically?

Yeah if you have an account on .com, you also have one on .ca and vice versa, so what you said doesn't make any sense.

"doesn't make any sense"
Sellers only need ONE account, not two.
Sellers like the original poster and myself registered on eBay.com (before eBay.ca was created) are always registered on eBay.com. That does not change.
Once registered as seller, you do not need another registration. You can sell on any of the eBay international sites in the currency of the site.

Go to the URL bar.
Change ebay.ca to ebay,com.
Problem solved.
Ah hah! You haven't sold anything in over a year.
It's likely you have been defaulted to the Simplified Sell Your Item Form on dotCA.
Again you can change the URL and list on dotCOM.
Or you can look at the dropdown menu and move to the Advanced form which allows more complex listings.
Note that at the moment there is a promotion to encourage Canadian dollar listings on dot CA which will run into May.
Note that dotCA allows you to use Calculated Shipping
Note that whatever currency you list in, your customer sees your price in his own currency in Search.
And also note that with such a long vacation, your customers' payments will be Held by Paypal against your good customer service for 21 days.
