Date: Monday, August 29
Time: 2:00 - 3:00 PM ET
Where: Right here on Canada Town Square!
Host: Harry Rinker, HGTV’s Collector Inspector and author of How to Think Like a Collector will be available to answer your questions. Harry can demystify the often emotional, competitive and confusing world of collecting and wants to teach Canadians how to think like a bona fide collector.
Here are some of the topics Harry will be covering:
What’s it worth? – Appraisals of your collections
Is it antique, collectable or junk? How to judge an item's value while learning to get the best price when selling
The collecting personality – What your collection says about you.
“Collectiquette” – The etiquette and protocol of collectors
Rinker’s Rule of Ten - How many is too many?
Hope you can join us!

Tragedy today is that most collectors will buy only objects that look like they just came off the assembly line -- even if the object is fifty or more years old.
I tell them to look in the mirror.

Antique shows tend to be frustrating today because of the high prices.
I think everything an antiques dealers sells something they think they charged too little.
Have we reached the point where the measure of a successful show is when the dealers has not sold a darn thing?
Heaven help us all.

You need to visit the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum in Rochester, NY.
When Connie, my second wife, went there with me, she walked in the door, stopped dead in her tracks, and said: "This is the pile you are trying to beat, isn't it?"
"Yep," said I.

Harry,
I'm trying to keep my pile pretty small right now. My kids are very young and want to play with and touch everything (or eat it!) but someday I suspect my pile will rival yours!

My grandchildren play with my pile.
A toy is a toy -- it is something to be played with.
Can wait to get down on the floor with my two month old granddaughter and play with my Amos and Andy taxi.
We need to remember that collecting is about creating memories.
When we say "don't touch," it is sure fire way to make certain our children sell our things for money.

I have some items that people think are to much but I also know that there is a base of collectors that would be thrilled finding them at that price
I usually price the way I buy People want deals. I do. I look at what I have into the item what is a fair price to make some sell it and then reinvest the money in items that will help me expand my stock and sell more
I have had many items that are worth significantly more than I sell them for but I think If I put top dollar on them I may have to sit for a long time before it sells and my money is tied up. If I take a lesser amount I can recoup my cost and use that again to make more from my initial investment

The first place to which people return is the place where they found a bargain.
Better to be known as a person who sells at a bargain that a person who constantly is gouging and seeking top dollar.
Enjoyed talking with you.

Its the thrill of the hunt. You never know what you will find especially when you are not expecting it. That is a high I can't even describe. One can derive alot of satisfaction from it asnd pride at what they have done I get to own items I never expected to own let alone see. They get to be with me for awhile then they move on and I go looking again
had that happen a few weeks ago found two of the best items I have had in years I was speechless with one the guy I was buying it from had a good time watching me try to form a coherent thought
